Valley cricketers pay their respects

NSW-born Hughes was fatally injured when struck by a cricket ball during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday and died two days later.

Minor delays at Maydena on Monday morning
NORSKE Skog has advised that it will be removing a dangerous tree from alongside Gordon River Rd at Maydena this Monday, December 1, in the area of the RSL sign at about 7.30am. There will be a small delay to traffic but the company will work with the school bus to ensure it is not late for school.

Round 5
GRETNA Under 13s had a good match with Lindisfarne last weekend. Tyrone Bailey did well, making 25 not out, while Zac Wheeler hit 12 and Jacob Blackwell 10. The team was outstanding in the field and bowled very well. Callum Rogers, Conor Kelly-Lennox and Tyrone Bailey all took a wicket each.
In the New Norfolk Under 13s match against Kingston, the young Red Caps did very well. Coby Kemmler made 25 not out and Jye Bearman 21 not out in the total of 105. Teagan Kemmler and Dylan Browning bowled well, taking a wicket each.
In the Under 15s Gretna defeated Clarence at Clarence by 94 runs. Hannah Mann batted very well making 39 and Josh Eyles and Ryan Emery scored 29 each. For the bowlers it was again Blake Mayne doing the damage, taking the stunning figures of 4-5 off two overs with three of his victims coming in his first over. Jake Campbell and Jake Ransley also bowled tightly, taking a wicket each.
New Norfolk Under 15s went down to Wellington in a good match. Lucas Higgins 28 and Rhys Franklin 21 were the top scores with the bat, while with the ball T. Wakefield, Liam Rowbottom and Cody Morgan got amongst the wickets. Coach Snowy Rowlands says the troops are improving every week.
Molesworth Under 15s had another good win, defeating Old Beach by 36 runs. J. Bearman batted extremely well to make the great score of 39 while B. McRoss and J. Fisher-Cooley got 16 each and Z. Purdon 15. J. Nichols did very well remaining 8 not out. Molesworth bowling figures were not available.

IN Tier 1 of the T20 Super Bash last week, New Norfolk went down to reining premiers Wellington by 57 runs. Stewart Rice top-scored for the Red Caps with 21 while recruit Kendall Bluett picked up three wickets from his four overs.
In Tier 2 it was a much different result for Molesworth which continued on its merry way with a close three-run victory over McRobies Gully. Molesworth had first bash, making 118 with Jacksyn Mann stepping up to the captaincy and batting well for almost the full innings to make 29. Jack Evans hit up 21 and Dakoda Smith made 16.
In reply McRobies went very close to victory but just couldn't get there due to some good performances from the Molesworth bowlers who kept their cool. Josh Ransley and Aaron Triffitt did well with two wickets each.

THE seven Derwent Valley teams managed only three wins in Round 6 of the Southern Cricket Association last weekend.
The highlight was the excellent batting display that gave New Norfolk its first win in First Grade. Winning the toss and opting to bat, the Red Caps hit up the big score of 300 against the higher placed Sorell. Coach Dave Maddox led the way with a fine 71 while Stewart Rice got into top gear with some big hitting to make 65. Glenn Williams also did well with the willow, hitting 56, as did Adrian Eiszele with 55. In reply, Sorell couldn't reach the big target and was bowled out for 234. Josh Dykes was the pick of the New Norfolk bowlers, taking 3-28, while Stewart Rice finished off a good day with 2-39. After six rounds, this was the form New Norfolk has been looking for and they would be happy to have the monkey off their back.
After getting back on the winners list the previous week, Gretna I took a nose dive with a big loss to Sandford in Second Grade on Sunday at Gretna. The visitors had first hit, making the good score of 187. Aaron Maddox has bowled well this season and was the best of the Gretna bowlers taking 2-26.
With the bat the home side never looked to be in the hunt and was bowled out for just 81. Aaron Maddox was the top scorer with 16.
In the other Second Grade match, Molesworth I went down to Sorell by four wickets. Molesworth had first dig making 10 for 166 with Cody Neads batting very well and making a half-century. New recruit Jake King was the next best with 24. From here the home side chased down Molesworth's total with the loss of six wickets. Brayden Hodge bowled well to be the main wicket taker with 3-21.
In Third Grade on Saturday it was yet another big win for the all-conquering Bushy Park team. Playing at home the Park boys hit up the very good total of 221 off their allotted 50 overs. Opening batsman Geoff Crosswell did very well, batting with control and making 78. Crosswell led from the word go and was well supported by Danny Mason's 38 runs and Mitch Crosswell's 20. In reply Derwent was bundled out for 96 runs. Mitchell Crosswell was once again on the war path, claiming four victims. Crosswell wasn't alone as Nathan Grant chimed in with four wickets of his own to help steamroll the opposition and claim another win.
Gretna II travelled to Runnymede and didn't have a great day. Winning the toss, the visitors sent the home side in to rack up the very good score of 252. It was a hard day for the Gretna bowlers with Luke Crosswell the main wicket taker with two while brother Zac got two as did Tom Gregson. With the bat, Gretna could only manage 134 to be all out after 43 overs. Captain Damien Hack did his bit with 41 and Brian Smith hit 24. Well done to Ben Shaw on playing his 100th match for Gretna II.
In Fourth Grade New Norfolk II travelled to Risdon Vale where they were defeated by Hobart on Sunday. Batting first, the home side made the competitive total of 187 from 50 overs. Josh Walsh who had fielded for 47 overs for the injured Ashley Morgan in New Norfolk's win a day earlier, did very well taking 2-28 off 10 overs to be the best of New Norfolk II's bowlers. In the run chase, the Red Caps were never in the hunt and were bowled out for 94. Leigh Berry was the only shining light with 38, but Trent Mayne showed fight with a steady 15 and the team was all out in the 27th over.
Molesworth II recorded its third win on the trot in Fifth Grade with a close 14-run victory over Derwent on Saturday. Batting first, Molesworth made 142 after being bowled out in the 39th over. S. Upton top-scored with 22, Jordan Eiszele was next with 20 and Dakoda Smith got 18. In reply Derwent was going along nicely and at one stage was 6 for 116 and victory in sight, but with some great bowling from the Molesworth boys this wasn't to be and the home side was bowled out for 128. The main destroyer for Molesworth was none other than the mayor himself, Martyn Evans taking 4-19 off 6.1 overs in great spell of bowling. Josh Ransley continued his good form with the ball, claiming 3-21, while Jacksyn Mann 2-9 and Aaron Triffitt 1-23 also got amongst the action. It was a great win by Molesworth II.

Tunnel verdict: it's a drain

Flinders University representatives Heather Burke and Chantal Wight entered the structure at two locations in Burnett St today and determined that it was in fact a brick drain, probably for sewage. It is about 75cm wide and too low for an adult to walk through.
One entrance point was near the Riteway Supermarket and the other was near Beaurepaires. In both locations, access was gained via ventilation shafts. The brick-lined shaft near Beaurepaires was about 5m deep while the one outside the supermarket was just under 8m deep and made of concrete.
Associate Professor Burke said the drain was a very old brick structure. As shown in earlier video footage, the structure has a flat floor, straight walls and a curved roof. The bricks are hand-made and carry the "broad arrow" impression. The bricks in the ventilation shaft were newer than those in the drain and appeared to be mass-produced.
The investigators formed the view that the structure was built by first digging a trench and then building the brick drain, with the exception of a section that was tunneled through rock near High St. Further research will be carried out to determine the precise age of the structure.
Professor Burke and technical officer Wight spent two days in New Norfolk exploring archaeological opportunities in New Norfolk ahead of a field school this summer.

University to study Willow Court
AN archaeology field school will be conducted at the Willow Court historic site in New Norfolk this summer. Flinders University has advertised the five-day program among its students and has sent an advance party to New Norfolk this week.
Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans said this was an exciting development for the site and had the potential to become a 10-year partnership with the South Australian university. The first field school will be held in February 2015.
From 1827 until 2001, New Norfolk was home to Tasmania's major hospital for people with intellectual disability or mental illness. Originally a convict hospital, the oldest surviving building on the site was erected in 1830 and became known as Willow Court.

Speedway on tonight
THE gates have opened at the Mountain Dew raceway outside New Norfolk for its first night of speedway racing this season.

New Norfolk's river rules

Rules for boats and personal watercraft on the Derwent River at New Norfolk
In anticipation of warmer weather in the forthcoming months, New Norfolk police would like to remind boat and personal watercraft users of the rules governing the Derwent River around New Norfolk.
There are several varied speed zones on the Derwent River at New Norfolk. There is a 5 knot speed limit from the New Norfolk Bridge downstream approximately 900 metres. The end of the zone is marked by a rectangular warning sign on the northern shore.
A 5 knot speed limit applies except for when towing a skier from the line between the New Norfolk Aquatic Club and slightly east of the New Norfolk Caravan Park to a line across the river between the eastern end of Norske Skog and the Sorell Creek outlet near Molesworth Road.
Users of personal watercraft (PWC) such as jet skis are reminded that they are required to have the PWC extension to their boating licence. All boat, PWC and kayak users are required to carry and wear suitable personal floatation devices (PFDs) when on the water.
Police have received an increase in complaints from river users relating to the speed and behaviour of other boat and PWC owners. Local police will be conducting regular patrols of nearby boat ramps and river banks and actively engaging with boat and PWC users in order to ensure compliance with relevant rules. Penalties will be issued where offences are detected.
Wakeboarders on the river today
Marine and Safety Tasmania advises that boats not competing in the event should stay clear of the course at all times and take notice of instructions from competition officials in the appropriately marked vessels. The 5 knot limit is revoked for those vessels competing.
This should be a spectacular event on the river. It's a shame it hasn't been more effectively promoted.

Asset sales may fund Willow Court works
SURPLUS land and buildings in the municipality may be sold as the Derwent Valley Council looks for ways to fund ongoing conservation and restoration works at Willow Court. The historic site in central New Norfolk was a topic of discussion for the final meeting of the council prior to last month's election and again at the first meeting of the new council last night.
The council last month resolved to apply to the Federal Government to have the site added to the National Heritage List and last night's meeting approved motions to prepare a list of all land and buildings owned by the council and have the council's Land Sale Committee review potential asset sales.
The meeting heard that the funds available for works at the former hospital site were almost exhausted and no new money was on the horizon. All councillors who spoke to the motion were in favour of the proposal, although newly-elected Councillor Frank Pearce attempted to bring forth an amendment to spread the distribution of the proceeds of any asset sales more broadly. Cr Pearce proposed directing some of the proceeds to capital works or cash reserves, but this lapsed for want of a seconder.
Cr James Graham said the intent of the motion, which had been proposed by Cr Damian Bester and seconded by Cr Graham, was to find a revenue stream for Willow Court. "Watering it down waters it down," Cr Graham said of the proposed amendment.
The meeting later appointed Councillors Julie Triffett, Frank Pearce, James Graham and Damian Bester to the Land Sale Committee. Cr Bester said it would be important that committee's deliberations be held in public to avoid a repeat of the so-called "secret land sale" debate of a decade ago.

SOME great matches were played in the junior cricket at the weekend. In the Under 13s Gretna played out a close one with Clarence Maroon, going down by just six runs. Tyron Bailey did very well with the bat making 62 not out and he also took 2 wickets. Sam Jackson also got two wickets and his brother Riley claimed his first ever wicket.
New Norfolk Under 13s did very well against Lindisfarne. Jordan Gittus did well making 16, while Riley Higgins remained 8 not out. Zayde Hill bowled well taking two wickets while Coby Kemmler claimed one.
In the Under 15s Gretna had a big win over Old Beach Gold with Sam Booth batting very well and making his first ever century. Booth hit 6x4s and 11x6s in his total of 114. Josh Eyles did very well playing his first match and making 60 not out including 7x4s and 2x6s. Blake Mayne was again in good form and got 25. Hannah Mann captured 2-4 to be the best of the bowlers as did Jake Campbell and Jacob Bowerman.
When Sam Booth was on 99 he hit the ball firmly to square leg where his cousin Ian Booth was officiating as umpire. The ball hit Ian right in the ribs leaving a nice bruise. Seeing this, Sam went to Ian's aid, totally forgetting about a possible century until Ian directed him to go take a run. That sure is taking one for the team Ian!
In the New Norfolk Under 15s match, the young Red Caps went down to Kingborough by 93 runs. Nathan Rice did very well making 33 before being unluckily bowled after the ball had come off his gloves. Jye Bearman also batted well making 15. Cody Morgan bowled well capturing three wickets including a great catch and a run-out. Rhys Franklin and Dylan Morgan chimed in with one wicket each.
In the other Under 15s match, Molesworth defeated New Town by 52 runs. No other details were available.
Congratulations to Hannah Mann who has again been selected in the State Under 15 girls team. Hannah flys out to Sydney on Tuesday with the team. Well done Hannah.

New-look council meets tonight
THE
first meeting of the Derwent Valley Council
in its new form will be held at 6.30 tonight (Thursday) in the courthouse in Circle St, New Norfolk. The meeting is open to the public and the agenda documents are available online.
The members of the incoming eight-member council have already been declared elected but the first order of business at tonight's meeting will be the official swearing-in. According to the agenda documents, it will be done in the following order: Martyn Evans (Mayor), Ben Shaw (Deputy Mayor), Barry Lathey, Damian Bester, James Graham, Julie Triffett, Paul Belcher and Frank Pearce.

WITH some great individual efforts in the senior and junior cricket matches, it was again another eventful weekend of cricket. In Fourth Grade, Bushy Park racked up another win by easily accounting for new team Weily Park. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, but Bushy unleashed their lethal weapon in Mitch "King" Crosswell who had the Rockers in disarray. Crosswell picked up from where he left off last round, taking 6 for 24 to help demolish the batting line up, bowling them all out for just 49. Including his haul of eight wickets from a week earlier, Crosswell has taken 14 in a fortnight and now has 16 in total this season along with 259 runs with the bat. Nathan Grant played his part with three wickets while brother Dylan got the other. In reply, the Park lost just the one wicket with captain Troy "Wizard" Smith making 31 not out and Mitch Crosswell capping off a great match making 17 not out.
In the match at Gretna on Sunday, Gretna II went down to St Annes by four wickets. The home team had first hit and with many batsmen getting starts that didn't go far, the team was bowled out for 100. Corey Ransley and Joey Eyles top-scored with 21 each. In reply St Annes reached the target of 101 with four wickets in hand. Joey Eyles was the pick of the Gretna bowlers taking 2-16 off 5.2 overs.
In First Grade on Sunday, New Norfolk I came oh so close to its first victory when it went down to St Annes by just two wickets. Batting first, the Red Caps made the defendable score of 175. Jamie Maddox and Richard Graham top-scored with 35 runs each and Josh Walsh chipped in with 32. In reply the home side was cruising at 4 for 101 but then lost quick wickets to be 8 for 156, but a 20 run partnership by the St Annes tailenders got them home. All the New Norfolk batsmen tried hard. Josh Walsh, Aaron Drew and Josh Rowlands all finished with two wickets each and Stewart Rice one.
A much more determined Gretna I team got back on the Second Grade winners list on Saturday by thrashing St Aidans by nine wickets at North Warrane. The home team had first hit and was bundled out for 93 with all of the Gretna bowlers doing their job. Azza Maddox bagged four for just 14 runs off 9.1 overs, youngsters Brock Nichols and Daniel Browning got two each and Craig Cunningham bowled very tightly, 1-4 off five overs. In reply Gretna did it with ease, losing just the one wicket during the run chase. Mathew Burns made a welcome return to form with a well made 48 not out. Opener Ben Rainbird got 23 while Rhys Browning remained 12 not out. Congratulations to Zac Crosswell and Thomas Gregson on playing their first matches with Gretna I. Zac took the gloves in the absence of Glenn Blackwell and did a great job taking a good catch and a run out.
A brave all-round effort which included a century by the in-form Brad Coppleman all but got Molesworth home against Richmond/Cambridge at Boyer Oval on Saturday. Batting first the visitors made 224 with Coppleman snaring 4-33 to be the best of the bowlers, Brad Ransley, Jye County and Nathan Eiszele were the other wicket takers. In reply, Molesworth was bowled out for 201, coming in at first drop with the score on three, Coppleman batted almost the whole innings on his way to 106, but was the ninth wicket out with the score on 191. It was a brave effort from the talented cricketer who nearly won the match single-handedly. The next best score was Josh Bomford's 16.
In the Fourth Grade match at Tynwald Park New Norfolk II went down to City by six wickets. New Norfolk had first hit, making 116. B. Skelly and Jon Murray were the main run scorers with 25 and 24 respectively. In reply City chased down the small total losing just four wickets. All bowlers for New Norfolk claimed a wicket each with brothers Mitch and Nathan Rice bowling well and getting one each. These two have a big future in front of them, particular if they take after their dad Stewart who is still taking wickets for New Norfolk I.
In Fifth Grade on Sunday, Molesworth knocked up another win, this time at the expense of McRobies Gully by three wickets. The visitors had first knock, making just 106 due to some good bowling by Molesworth in particular from Sam Triffitt who in a good spell with 5-22. The ever-improving Jack Evans also did well taking three as did Aaron Triffitt with two. Molesworth reached the target of 107 but also lost seven wickets along the way. Jack Evans topped off a great days play with 34 runs while another youngster, Tyson Gray, was next best with 16.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, but Bushy unleashed their lethal weapon in Mitch "King" Crosswell who had the Rockers in disarray. Crosswell picked up from where he left off last round, taking 6 for 24 to help demolish the batting line up, bowling them all out for just 49. Including his haul of eight wickets from a week earlier, Crosswell has taken 14 in a fortnight and now has 16 in total this season along with 259 runs with the bat. Nathan Grant played his part with three wickets while brother Dylan got the other. In reply, the Park lost just the one wicket with captain Troy "Wizard" Smith making 31 not out and Mitch Crosswell capping off a great match making 17 not out.
In the match at Gretna on Sunday, Gretna II went down to St Annes by four wickets. The home team had first hit and with many batsmen getting starts that didn't go far, the team was bowled out for 100. Corey Ransley and Joey Eyles top-scored with 21 each. In reply St Annes reached the target of 101 with four wickets in hand. Joey Eyles was the pick of the Gretna bowlers taking 2-16 off 5.2 overs.
In First Grade on Sunday, New Norfolk I came oh so close to its first victory when it went down to St Annes by just two wickets. Batting first, the Red Caps made the defendable score of 175. Jamie Maddox and Richard Graham top-scored with 35 runs each and Josh Walsh chipped in with 32. In reply the home side was cruising at 4 for 101 but then lost quick wickets to be 8 for 156, but a 20 run partnership by the St Annes tailenders got them home. All the New Norfolk batsmen tried hard. Josh Walsh, Aaron Drew and Josh Rowlands all finished with two wickets each and Stewart Rice one.
A much more determined Gretna I team got back on the Second Grade winners list on Saturday by thrashing St Aidans by nine wickets at North Warrane. The home team had first hit and was bundled out for 93 with all of the Gretna bowlers doing their job. Azza Maddox bagged four for just 14 runs off 9.1 overs, youngsters Brock Nichols and Daniel Browning got two each and Craig Cunningham bowled very tightly, 1-4 off five overs. In reply Gretna did it with ease, losing just the one wicket during the run chase. Mathew Burns made a welcome return to form with a well made 48 not out. Opener Ben Rainbird got 23 while Rhys Browning remained 12 not out. Congratulations to Zac Crosswell and Thomas Gregson on playing their first matches with Gretna I. Zac took the gloves in the absence of Glenn Blackwell and did a great job taking a good catch and a run out.
A brave all-round effort which included a century by the in-form Brad Coppleman all but got Molesworth home against Richmond/Cambridge at Boyer Oval on Saturday. Batting first the visitors made 224 with Coppleman snaring 4-33 to be the best of the bowlers, Brad Ransley, Jye County and Nathan Eiszele were the other wicket takers. In reply, Molesworth was bowled out for 201, coming in at first drop with the score on three, Coppleman batted almost the whole innings on his way to 106, but was the ninth wicket out with the score on 191. It was a brave effort from the talented cricketer who nearly won the match single-handedly. The next best score was Josh Bomford's 16.
In the Fourth Grade match at Tynwald Park New Norfolk II went down to City by six wickets. New Norfolk had first hit, making 116. B. Skelly and Jon Murray were the main run scorers with 25 and 24 respectively. In reply City chased down the small total losing just four wickets. All bowlers for New Norfolk claimed a wicket each with brothers Mitch and Nathan Rice bowling well and getting one each. These two have a big future in front of them, particular if they take after their dad Stewart who is still taking wickets for New Norfolk I.
In Fifth Grade on Sunday, Molesworth knocked up another win, this time at the expense of McRobies Gully by three wickets. The visitors had first knock, making just 106 due to some good bowling by Molesworth in particular from Sam Triffitt who in a good spell with 5-22. The ever-improving Jack Evans also did well taking three as did Aaron Triffitt with two. Molesworth reached the target of 107 but also lost seven wickets along the way. Jack Evans topped off a great days play with 34 runs while another youngster, Tyson Gray, was next best with 16.

Tree cuts power in New Norfolk
A TREE resting on powerlines has cut the electricity supply of about 1200 customers in New Norfolk, TasNetworks has reported via Twitter. Repair crews are on the way but as of 2.20pm the restoration time is yet to be advised.

Banners go up in record time

| Christmas banners went up in High St yesterday. |
The welcome arrival of some Christmas cheer is the result of an ongoing initiative of the New Norfolk Business Alliance with the installation of custom-made banner poles down one side of the street late last year.
These have recently been supplemented by additional poles along the post office side of the street. The Christmas banners went up yesterday and is a vast improvement on previous years when the erection of the old-style decorations was a much more complicated affair.
The unique design of the banner poles allows them to be lowered by hand for the installation and removal of promotional banners. Community groups can contact the council about having their own banners displayed, as the New Norfolk Lions Club did recently.

TWO of the Derwent Valley's most beautiful and interesting private gardens will be open for the public to visit between 10am and 4.30pm this Sunday, November 16 through the Alcorso Foundation's popular Family Garden Day program.
Entry costs $7.50 per garden. Accompanied children aged under 12 will be admitted free. Picnics welcome. An exclusive special edition wine by winemaker Julian Alcorso will be available for purchase on the day. All proceeds from the Sunday Garden Visits go towards the Alcorso Foundation’s humanitarian education awards. More information is available from www.alcorso.org.au

It includes oaks, chestnuts, cedars and maples. Many of these trees are more than a century old. The coach house, stables and oast house will be open to visitors. There is rose walk to the river and a garden featuring a parterre and espaliered pears and crab apples. The house was licensed as an inn in 1822. Bring a picnic and enjoy your lunch in the garden overlooking the river or in the courtyard under the trees.

Meadowbank Rd is a gravel road on the right hand side of the Gordon River Rd 2km past Glenora District High School on the road to Westerway and Mt Field National Park. "Meadowbank" lies at the end of Meadowbank Rd (about 7 km from the turnoff). The Victorian sandstone house (1873) is set in a beautiful garden adjoining the vineyard with stunning views over the Derwent River. Several original trees remain, including a mulberry, pear and a snakebark elm. There is also a century old wisteria which frames the side veranda. The current garden, mainly planted from 1980, is reaching maturity and follows the plan of the original garden. It features low sandstone walls creating terraced lawns and garden beds following the contours of the land. Many roses, rhododendrons, camellias, and other perennial plants and shrubs mingle happily together in this large country garden.

Round 3 results from Sunday, November 9.
THERE were many highlights in the junior cricket last weekend. Of the New Norfolk Under 13s, Coby Kemmler did very well making 25 not out as did Jordan Gittus with 20 runs. In the Gretna Under 13s the team preformed very well against a much older Kingston Crows outfit. Brayden Butler did well and remained 8 not out as did Brodie Scanlon who made 5 not out and Aidan Featherstone 6. Callum Rogers bowled very well getting two wickets.
In the Under 15s game between Gretna and Molesworth the match came down to the final ball. Gretna batted first and made 10 for 112 with Jake Campbell top-scoring with 42 not out. Jeremy Nichols picked up 3-9 off 7 for Molesworth. In reply Molesworth was bowled out just two runs shy of victory. With one wicket remaining and needing two runs to win from the final ball, Gretna's Ryan Emery took a difficult catch off the bowling of Blake Mayne to give his side victory. Mayne finished with two wickets and Jake Ransley 3.
An equally big highlight from the Gretna/Molesworth match was the effort of opener J. Franklin for Molesworth who carried his bat right through innings to remain 44 not out. This is a fine effort. It was a great match to watch and the sportsmanship shown was a credit to both teams.

New Norfolk fielded first and kept Clarence to 107 with Lucas Higgins bowling well taking 2 for 2 off three overs while Tyson Wakefield got his first wicket 1 for 5. Nathan Rice again bowled well, 1 for 15 off 7. The team fielded very well and snared four runouts. After being 2 for 42 New Norfolk was all out for 80. Jye Bearman did very well making 32. Dylan Morgan remained 9 not out and Nathan Rice got 8. The boys are improving every week.

Round 4
OF the seven Derwent Valley teams, Bushy Park and Molesworth II were the only two to record wins in the Southern Cricket Association last weekend. An outstanding eight-wicket haul by Bushy Park's opening bowler Mitch Crosswell helped his team easily defeat St Virgil's by 130 runs. Crosswell's fine spell of pace bowling smashed through the visitors line up like a wrecking ball at full swing. His final figures of 10 overs, one maiden, 8 for 23 was easily the best bowling this season thus far and if Crosswell's form continues, Bushy Park will cause much more havoc in third grade. Earlier Bushy had hit up the good total of 197 with Nathan Grant doing well with the willow making 53 while captain Troy "Wizard" Smith chipped in with 30 and in a great all round effort Mitch Crosswell made 26. It was good to see Nick Fenton return to the team and making 19 and there is a whisper his brother Dale may make a comeback.

With the momentum with Gretna, victory was in their sights, but Derwent steadied and went on to win by two wickets. Adam Browning returned to form with the ball for Gretna, taking 4-25 to be the best of the bowlers, while brothers Luke and Zac Crosswell again got amongst the wickets.
Playing at home on Sunday, New Norfolk I went down to Wellington by 72 runs. Chasing 185 for victory, the Red Caps managed just 112 before being bowled out after 31 overs. Back in the line up, Adrian Eiszele did very well making 39 but had little support with Stewart Rice the only other batsman to reach double figures with 23. With the ball, Josh Dykes and Stewart Rice took three wickets apiece. New Norfolk is yet to record a win in first grade, but with a bit more persistence, it's not far away.
With a batting form slump, Gretna I failed to put a competitive total on the board against home side Sorell on Saturday. Batting first, Gretna was dismissed for just 87 off 29.5 overs. Captain Ben Rainbird was the only batsman to show any resistance with 23. Three other batsmen reach 13. For the Gretna bowlers, Corey Ransley did very well taking four wickets and had Sorell in a spot of bother, but it wasn't to be as the opposition ran away victors by five wickets. It will be a much more determined Gretna side this weekend in the match against St Aidans.

Batting first, Molesworth made the total of 10 for 130 with Brad Coppleman top scoring with 32 and Josh Bomford remaining 23 not out. In reply, the home side made hard work of it, losing six wickets before claiming victory in the 26th over. For the Molesworth bowlers the ever improving Jye County claimed two wickets as did captain Jamie Adams.
In fourth grade on Sunday, New Norfolk II went down to Rokeby by 77 runs at Clarendon Vale. Chasing the home side's total of 203, the Red Caps were bowled out for 126 with Leigh Berry playing a lone hand making 83 and was the only batsman to reach double figures. With the ball, Nathon Heron was the best of the bowlers taking 1-21 off seven overs.
In fifth grade Molesworth II was a big winner over St Aidans by 176 runs on Saturday. Molesworth young gun Jack Evans stepped up to the plate with a top score of 58. Brad Ransley gave good support with 35, while younger brother Josh chipped in with 29 and Jake Foster 24. At the fall of the 10th wicket, Molesworth's total was 242. In reply St Aidans was bundled out for just 66. Josh Ransley capped off a great day with a fine spell of bowling of 4-15 off 9.1 overs. Jacksyn Mann also did equally well taking 3-10 off seven.
