University to study Willow Court

AN archaeology field school will be conducted at the Willow Court historic site in New Norfolk this summer. Flinders University has advertised the five-day program among its students and has sent an advance party to New Norfolk this week.

Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans said this was an exciting development for the site and had the potential to become a 10-year partnership with the South Australian university. The first field school will be held in February 2015.

From 1827 until 2001, New Norfolk was home to Tasmania's major hospital for people with intellectual disability or mental illness. Originally a convict hospital, the oldest surviving building on the site was erected in 1830 and became known as Willow Court.

  1. Congratulations to all those involved with this exciting initiative with Flinders University. Perhaps all those negative neddys and nellys who wanted Willow Court bulldozed with realise one day how wrong they were.
