Tasmania's 28th Governor

Last week I received informal approval from Her Majesty The Queen that Professor Kate Warner AM be appointed Tasmania's 28th Governor.

Professor Warner has led a distinguished career as a Law Professor at the University of Tasmania. She has been Director of the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute and Commissioner of the Tasmanian Gaming Commission, as well as a member of the Sentencing Advisory Council and President of the Alcorso Foundation. Professor Warner was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia this year for her significant service to the law.

Professor Warner will succeed the late Honourable Peter Underwood AC who served as Governor with great distinction. I thank the Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Justice Alan Blow OAM, who has administered the state since Mr Underwood's death.

Professor Warner now brings her own qualities to this important role, as Tasmania's first female Governor.

Professor Warner was born in Tasmania and graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1970, receiving her Master of Laws in 1978.

She is married to Richard Warner. They have two daughters and five grandchildren. She is also a passionate gardener, keen bushwalker and cyclist.

Professor Warner will reside at Government House during her five year appointment. Upon notification of formal approval from The Queen, Professor Warner will be sworn to office on Wednesday 10th December 2014.
