Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in the South East and parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, East Coast and Midlands Forecast Districts.

DAMAGING WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN FOR PARTS OF EAST AND SOUTHEAST TASMANIA
Weather Situation:
An intense low pressure system lies off the east coast of Tasmania and slowly tracks southeastwards during the day.
DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible for the east and southeast coasts south of Bicheno, as well as elevated areas in the east and southeast above 500 metres. Winds are expected to gradually ease during the afternoon and early evening.
HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible about parts of the East Coast and South East forecast districts, as well as parts of the Midlands and the Upper Derwent Valley. A further 10mm to 20mm of rainfall is expected for the remiander of the day, with some isolated heavier falls. Rainfall rates have begun to ease though the north and inland areas.
Locations which may be affected include Swansea, Orford, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the North East district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.
In the past 6 hours Mt Wellington reported gusts of 120 km/h, Maria Island 109 km/h, Tasman Island 100 km/h, and Dunalley 91 km/h. Since 9am, rainfall totals of 25-40 mm have been recorded in the southeast and east of the state.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Clear drains and gutters on premises prior to severe weather arriving.
* Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11pm Sunday.
