Council dumps recycling contractor

A TEMPORARY contractor has been appointed to carry out the Derwent Valley Council's household recycling collections following reports of difficulties and disruptions to the service in recent months.

"Derwent Valley Council regrets that some residents’ recycling waste bins were not collected over the Christmas/New year period by its contractor," council communications officer Karen Gower-Bradley said.

"Providing a reliable waste collection service to our community is very important to the council, and our officers have moved quickly over the break, to manage recent failures and delays to the collection of bins," Ms Gower-Bradley said.

Ms Gower-Bradley said a new permanent contractor would be appointed by the council this year. "In the meantime, an experienced statewide waste management company has been engaged to deliver reliable collection service for our community. Instructions have been given to the new company to collect, where possible, the missed bins this week."

Recycling and household waste collection dates will remain unchanged. More information including area maps and a collection dates can be found on the council website here.

"Please remember to place your bin out for collection by 6am on the day of collection, to
ensure you don’t miss the truck’s arrival in your street," Ms Gower-Bradley said.
