First Grade
New Norfolk I did its finals prospects no harm, picking up two bonus points with a big eight-wicket win over bottom-placed Montagu Bay. Playing at Geilston Bay, the Red Caps sent the Sharks in to bat and in 27.3 overs had the home team bundled out for just 92. Only five bowlers were needed, with Josh Rowlands and Ben Smith taking three wickets each. Rowlands finished with 3-9 off just 3.3 overs and Smith 3-20 (6). Captain Jason Rigby captured both openers, finishing 2-19 from eight overs in a very good spell, while Josh Dykes did well also with 1-24 (7). In reply, New Norfolk took just 14.1 overs to get the job done, finishing 2-93. Harry Booth didn’t muck around hitting eight fours in his top-scoring session of 40 not out. Jake King remained on 20 not (two fours) and opener Seb Wishart made 12 with two fours.
Second Grade
Gretna I went down to the Knights at the Collinsvale Oval by 41 runs. Winning the toss and batting first, the home side was going well at 2-93 but was pegged back to end up with 9-227 after 50 overs. Craig Cunningham with 2-24 (10), Jackson Ackerly with 2-28 (10) and Zac Crosswell with 2-12 (3) were the main wicket-takers. In reply, Gretna got off to a bad start when opener Glenn Blackwell was run out for a diamond duck. Soon after they were 3-14 and then 4-45. A partnership of 65 between Rhys Browning with 41 from 47 balls (four fours, two sixes) and Luke Crosswell with 29 (four fours) steadied the ship, but from there the visitors lost regular wickets and were bowled out for 186 off 36.3 overs. Other run scorers were Craig Cunningham with 28 from 33 balls (five fours), Jackson Ackerly with 24 from 23 balls (four fours) and Mathew Burns with 19 from 11 balls, hitting four fours.
In the other match, Molesworth I lost to Richmond/Cambridge by five wickets at Richmond. Winning the toss and sending Molesworth in to bat, the visitors lost quick wickets and were 3-20, but then a 64-run stand between Brad Coppleman with 50 runs (three fours, four sixes) and Josh Ransley with 24 (four fours) lifted spirits. But wickets then fell regularly again and they were bowled out for 162 off 49.3 overs. At number nine, Jeremy Nichols showed fight with 21 not out (two fours) and Khan Stokes made 16 (two fours). In reply the home team reached the required runs, finishing 5-164 from 38 overs. Molesworth used nine bowlers in the very hot conditions. Shayne Upton was the main wicket-taker with 3-14 (3) while Brad Coppleman had a good day with both bat and ball, taking 2-24 (8).
Third Grade
New Norfolk II was defeated by MacKillop Beltas by 38 runs at Tynwald Park on Saturday. Batting first, the visitors posted the good score of 8-214 from their 50 overs. Jamie Maddox captured 4-49 from nine overs, Graeme Rowlands took 2-34 (8) and Cody Neads 1-21 (7). There was one run out. In reply, the Red Caps were dismissed for 176 from 43 overs. Leigh Berry batted well for 37, hitting five fours and one six. Jarrod Browning also did well with 34 (five fours), Jye Bearman 17 (one four, one six), Cody Neads 16 (three fours), Jamie Maddox 15 (two fours) and Josh Walsh 15no (two sixes).
Fourth Grade
Claremont defeated Bushy Park by three wickets at Abbotsfield Park on Saturday. Sent in to bat first, the visitors got off to a good start with openers Troy Smith (27) and Trent Grant (13) putting on a 45-run partnership. But then the Bees lost three wickets for one run before Dylan Grant (28) and Geoff Crosswell (27) added 32. Soon after, with the score on 118, they lost another four wickets for just one run and were dismissed for 130 off 32.3 overs. Bushy pushed the Magpies’ batsmen somewhat but it wasn’t enough, with the home side finishing 7-131 from 30.1 overs. After batting well together, Dylan Grant and Geoff Crosswell bowled well taking 3-23 (6) and 3-24 (8) respectively. Nicholas Fenton was the other wicket taker with 1-14 (5.1).
At Bothwell, the Bucks went down to the Weily Park Rockers by five wickets. Winning the toss and batting, Bothwell was all out for 142 from 27.2 overs. Mathew Eyles top-scored with an entertaining 41, which included eight fours. He put on a 75-run partnership with opener Tyler White, who made 32 including six fours. Dylan Pearce remained 19no (two fours, one six). In reply the Rockers finished 5-143 from 32.3 overs. Nathan White took 2-33 from 7.3 overs, Nathan Eyles 2-38 (6) and Cody Eyles 1-23 (5).
Gretna II felt the heat in more ways than one, easily defeated at home by Bagdad by 108 runs. Batting first, the visitors made the huge score of 7-305 off 50 overs. Jake Campbell was the best of the Gretna bowlers with 2-30 (10). Todd Jarvis got 2-48 (10) while Sam Booth got 2-56 (10) and Aaron Browning 1-42 (4). There were 51 extras. In reply, Gretna started well with Jordan Hastie scoring 25 (four fours, one six) and Adam Browning 19 (two fours) to put on 39 together. Todd Jarvis with 37 (five fours, one six) and Brian Smith with 28 (two fours) added 51 in a good stand. In the end Gretna faced their 50 overs to finish 8-197 in what was a long and hot day at the office.
Seventh Grade
New Norfolk III showed why it is on top of the Seventh Grade ladder, defeating St Aidans by nine wickets at Tynwald Park on Saturday. Winning the toss, the Red Caps sent the visitors into bat and they made the defendable score of 8-18 . All the New Norfolk bowlers did well, but in particular Zaheer Hussain who sent down 10 overs to take 3-10 in a fine spell of bowling. Opener Aaron Drew took 2-31 (9), Brad Kemmler 1-27 (7) and David Mitchelmore 1-46 (8). There was one run out. In all another good win to New Norfolk.
Molesworth II was easily defeated by Hobart by nine wickets at Boyer Oval. Batting first and playing one player short, Molesworth was bowled out for the low score of 73 off 24.1 overs. In a lone hand, Jack Evans top scored with 33, hitting four fours and one six, while Brad Jarvis made 10 (one four). In reply, Hobart made easy work of the run chase finishing 1/74 from 19.1 overs. Jack Evans was the wicket taker with 1-11 (5).
Eighth Grade
Bothwell II defeated third-placed St Annes by 101 runs at Cadbury No.1 Oval on Sunday. Batting first, the Bucks racked up the very good score off 6-232, mostly down to young Josh Eyles who, batting at No. 4, hit up the good total of 72 which included eight well-stuck fours and two sixes. Brad Eyles also batted well, 42no with five fours. Brad put on a 99-run stand with Jamie Devine, who made 31no (three fours) earlier, and Michael White got 36 including three fours. In reply, St Annes was bowled out for 131. This was due to some excellent bowling from Kelvin Eyles who sent down eight overs, bagging 5-27 (three maidens) in a great spell. Mathew Glover took 2-12 from four overs and, after a great performance with the bat, Josh Eyles took 2-33 (10). Captain Anthony White got 1-1 from three balls, and veteran Joey Eyles got five catches in what was a great win.
