New Norfolk girls make history at North Hobart

AS the final siren sounded at North Hobart Oval last Sunday afternoon, there was jubilation as the New Norfolk Under 17 girls' football team celebrated its history-making win. The young Eagles had become the first female football team from New Norfolk to win a premiership.

In only the team's second season, the girls stormed home in what at times was a very tight affair, defeating the Kingborough Tigers by 14 points. In the first quarter, it was the Eagles who got off to a great start kicking 3.1 to the Tigers' solitary behind. Brianna Oates starred up forward kicking the first two majors of the game. Madison Shaw then chipped in for the third and from there the winners led at every change.

By the third quarter, the Eagles registered just one behind to the Tigers' 2.2. The margin after the premiership quarter was cut from 18 points at half time to just five at three quarter time. In the break, cool-headed coach Dean King and his assistants rallied their troops for one final effort.

And rally they did, with the Eagles kicking two goals in a matter of minutes. One went to Madison Shaw who starred all day, kicking three majors for the game, the other was by captain Perri King who slotted the other. The Tigers kicked just four behinds for the quarter and the premiership cup was New Norfolk's. King was judged best on ground in yet another inspirational effort.

The scene after the game was just something, and back in the changerooms there were plenty of smiles and tears of joy. Coach Dean King who was unusually quiet, was seen taking it all in as he had been there before as a player himself. The smile couldn’t be wiped of his face, and one couldn’t blame him, what better Father’s Day could one ask for?

Making the day extra special, this team consisted of three sets of sisters: Kayla and Kaitlen Rainbird, Danika and D’arne Triffett, and Madison and Georgie Shaw.

Congratulations to all involved, this all conquering team has certainly made history. The large number of supporters was very pleasing and there will be a real buzz at the vote count and trophy presentations this Friday night, so let’s get along and celebrate with the girls on their history making win.
