Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in Upper Derwent Valley, South East and parts of Western, East Coast and Midlands Forecast Districts.
Issued at 12:46 pm Wednesday, 12 September 2018.
DAMAGING WINDS OVER SOUTHERN TASMANIA ON WEDNESDAY
Weather Situation: A trough crossing the south of the state is bringing strong and gusty west to northwesterly winds.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are possible in the south of the state during the next few hours.
Winds have begun to ease in the west, and are expected to ease slightly in the south during the afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Orford, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston, Dover and Dodges Ferry.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Central Plateau district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.
In the last six hours, gusts of note include 159km/h at Maatsuyker Island, 126km/h Scotts Peak, 115 km/h at Low Rocky Point and 104 km/h on Mt Wellington.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5pm Wednesday.
