Update to Derwent flood watch

Bureau of Meteorology, Tasmania

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning.

Flood Watch for Derwent and South East catchments

Issued at 10:41am on Saturday 10 August 2019

By the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart.

Flood Watch Number: 2

Isolated minor flooding may develop from Saturday in the flood watch catchments.

A low pressure system situated to the east of Tasmania is producing a strong southerly stream over the State. The southerly stream will ease during Sunday as the low moves away.

Derwent catchment is wet from winter rainfall. Catchments in the south east and east are dry to very dry.

In the 24 hours to 9 am Saturday, widespread rainfall totals of 5-20 mm were observed in the flood watch catchments, with isolated high totals up to 35 mm.

Widespread rainfall totals of 10-20 mm in the southwest, and 5-15 mm in the south and east are expected for the remainder of Saturday, with higher totals possible in elevated areas. Additional rainfall totals of 5-15 mm are forecast for Sunday.

River rises are expected and isolated minor flooding may develop in some catchments as a result of the forecast rainfall. A Minor Flood Warning is current for the Huon River.

Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard over the next couple of days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Channel Coastal Rivers (South East Cape to Gordon)

Derwent River

East Coastal Rivers (south of Bicheno)

South East

Flooding is no longer expected in the following catchments: Jordan and Coal
