Initial Flood Watch for North West, Derwent and Huon catchments

Flood Watch Number: 1

Flooding is possible in North West, Derwent and Huon catchments from early Tuesday morning, based on forecast rainfall.

A strong westerly to southwesterly flow will persist over Tasmania for the next couple of days, with embedded fronts.

Catchments are generally wet from winter rainfall.

Widespread rainfall totals of 10-40 mm are forecast for Monday. Additional totals of 20-50 mm are forecast for Tuesday, with higher totals up to 80 mm possible in elevated areas.

Showers are expected to continue during Wednesday, with 20-40 mm forecast in the west and far south, before clearing during Thursday.

River rises are expected and flooding is likely at some locations from early Tuesday morning, based on forecast rainfall.

Catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Forth River

Northwest and Central Coastal Rivers

Arthur River

Huon River

Channel Coastal Rivers (South East Cape to Gordon)

Derwent River

(including Ouse)

Warning to Sheep Graziers

for the Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 3:59pm on Monday 19 August 2019.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and strong westerly winds are expected during Monday and Tuesday. Areas likely to be affected include the Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts and parts of the Furneaux Islands, North West Coast and Midlands forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 11pm Monday.

Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Central Plateau and parts of North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central North and Midlands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 2:43pm Monday, 19 August 2019.

DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON

Weather Situation:
A cold front embedded in a strong and gusty west to southwesterly flow will cross Tasmania on Tuesday

DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS are possible in all western, southern and central areas, as well as over the far northeast and the Bass Strait Islands. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible from around midday on Tuesday, although elevated areas above 400m may experience gusts up to 110km/h.

Winds will begin to ease over southeast Tasmania by Tuesday evening, but will likely continue overnight in western and central areas, and through Bass Strait, before easing by Wednesday afternoon. Winds will however remain fresh and gusty for several days.

Locations which may be affected include Currie, Smithton, Oatlands, Whitemark, Orford, Strahan, Hobart, and Geeveston.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
