Men’s 50-over matches
Round 1
FIRST GRADE: With the 50-over format now under way, New Norfolk I got off to a flying start when it accounted for Rokeby by seven wickets at Tynwald Park. The visitors had first knock and were bundled out for 119 off 33 overs. This was due to some excellent bowling in particular from Richard Graham and Josh Rowlands, the pair snaring seven wickets between them. Graham was exceptional, sending down eight overs, taking 4-15 with two maidens. Opening bowler Rowlands also did well with 3-26 from seven overs, with two maidens. In reply the Red Caps did it easy, chasing down the total and finishing 2/120 off 16 overs. Earlier they were 2/13, but from here opener Aaron Drew hit up a fine 67 not out with a game high 10 4s and two 6s. Cody Neads, who was out with the score on 3/101, made 41 (three 4s, one 6) and put on 88 with Drew.
SECOND GRADE: At Pontville on the Thompson Oval, Molesworth I lost to MacKillop by 39 runs. The Beltas had first hit, making 10/166 from 49.3 overs. Brad Coppleman was the pick of the bowlers with a five-fa, taking 5-25 off 10 in a great spell of bowling which included three maidens. Captain Jamie Adams was also good with 3-28 off 8.3 overs while Brayden Hodge was tight with 2-28 from 10. Chasing the modest total, Molesworth just couldn’t get going and was bowled out for 127 off 29.4 overs. Opener Daniel Coppleman just missed a half century, doing well making 47 from just 39 deliveries, striking nine 4. Daniel Adams made 19 and there were four ducks.
In a low-scoring affair at Gretna, New Norfolk II accounted for Gretna I by three wickets. Batting first, the home side was dismissed for 104 off 36.1 overs. The low total was thanks to some tight bowling from all the Red Caps bowlers, in particular from stand-in captain Jamie Hill who sent down seven overs, taking the great figures of 5-19. Stewart Rice was extremely tight taking 2-12 from seven including two maidens in a great spell. Josh Walsh finished with 1-4 off 3.1. Ruvinda Nanayakkara 1-14 (7) and Liam O’Brien 1-16 (6) with two maidens. A great effort in the field by David Mitchelmore who had very sticky hands, taking five catches. With the bat for Gretna, new player Marc Worldon opened the batting and top-scored with 29 (two 4s), while fellow opener Craig Cunningham made 17 (two 4s) and Jordan Hastie 10. In reply, New Norfolk didn’t get it easy and found itself at 4/28, but then fought its way to a good win, finishing 7/104 off 41.3 overs. At first drop, Chris Ashcroft top-scored with 28. At number eight, Jamie Hill finished his day off with 20 not out. Stewart Rice made 18 (2 fours, 1 six). New Norfolk is off to a great start.
FOURTH GRADE: At Weily Park in Bridgewater, Bothwell I went down to Wellington by five wickets. Batting first the Bucks were dismissed for 124 from 33.5 overs and in reply Wellington got the runs finishing 5/125 off 31.4 overs. With the willow, Nathan Eyles didn’t do much running, top-scoring with 31 from 30 deliveries, hitting five 4s and one 6. Mark Pearce made 23 from 23 with four 4s. Brock Nichols remained 21 not out (two 4s, one 6). Father-son duo Joey Eyles 1-10 (5) and Josh Eyles 1-10 (5.1) were the best of the bowlers.
FIFTH GRADE: The match between Derwent and New Norfolk III at North Warrane Oval had a delayed start due to a wet pitch, which in turn reduced the match to 48 overs apiece. The home side won the toss and sent New Norfolk in to bat and finished 10/202 off 42.1 overs. In reply, Derwent - which at one stage was 5/34 - fought back to fall just 28 runs short, 10/174 off 44.1 overs. With the bat for the Red Caps, Jordan Banks-Smith belted 59 runs from 37 deliveries. Banks-Smith swung the willow well, clubbing seven 4s and three 6s, and sharing a 68-run stand with Jordan Gittus who made 15 (two 4s). Batting at number seven, Rohan Heron made a handy 37 with four boundaries and shared a 46-run partnership with Luke Jarvis who also got among the runs making 32 with two big 6s. With the ball, captain Nathan Heron opened the bowling and bagged 3-27 from 10 overs. After a top day with the bat, Jordan Banks-Smith capped the day off finishing with good figures of 3-31 (10) including three maidens. Liam Kalbfell 1-28 (10) with two maidens also did well. The win on Sunday gave the Red Caps wins from all of its three senior teams in a great weekend for the club.
Playing at home on Sunday, Gretna II went down to Sorell by three wickets in a low-scoring match. Having first knock, the home team made 10/113 off 40.2 overs. In reply, Sorell finished 7/114 off 40.1 overs. Batting for Gretna, captain Ross Langford made 23 (3 fours). At number four, Brian Smith hung around for a handy 22 and put on a 42-run partnership with his captain. Best of the bowlers was spinner Ben Rainbird, who did his all to keep the team in it, taking 3-17 from 10 overs which included four maidens.
SEVENTH GRADE: In the 40 over match at Campania, it was a rain-affected result, with the home side defeating Bothwell II by two wickets. Batting first, the Bucks made 10/195 off 35.2 overs. In reply, Campania finished 8/128 off 25.1 overs. At number six, Nathan White put together a fine innings with a excellent 70 from 71 deliveries. White hit six 4s during his 69-minute stay at the crease and put on a valuable 117-run stand with captain Peter Hansch who remained 10 not out from 10 deliveries. Adam Pearce made 19 and Andrew Rolls 16. With the ball, Peter Hansch lead from the front taking 3-22 from 6.1 overs. Nathan White 2-34 (8), Adam Pearce 2-29 (4) and Andrew Rolls 1-6 (1).
In a close one, Molesworth II went down to Montagu Bay in a rain-affected match at Clarence High School. Having first dig, Molesworth (playing one short) hit up the good score of 9/200 off 36 overs. This was thanks to a great innings by Josh Nichols who put together a fine 64 from 67 deliveries. Nichols' valuable knock included three 4s and three 6s as he shared a 63-run partnership with Brad Ransley who made a quickfire 44 from just 33 deliveries in just 38 minutes. Ransley belted five 4s and a 6 in an entertaining knock. Sam Triffitt made 22 from 17 (2 fours, 1 six) and Blayne King made 20 not out (two 4s). King put on a 46-run stand with Nichols. In reply, the Sharks had a reduced target of 193 from 39 overs and just got there with three balls to spare, finishing 7/194 off 38.3 overs. With the ball, Shayne Upton was the main wicket-taker with 2-46 off 7 overs. Josh Nichols had a good day taking 1-17 (6) and opener Sam Triffitt 1-23 (8). Blayne King 1-50 (8).
