Thursday: Fire weather warning

Fire Weather Warning
for the Furneaux Islands, Central North, North East, East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East and Central Plateau forecast districts

Issued at 1:20pm on Wednesday 20 November 2019.

Weather Situation

A hot, dry, and very windy northwesterly airstream during Thursday will bring temperatures into the low-30's, RH of around 15% and northwesterly winds of 40 to 60 km/h with gusty conditions to the eastern half of Tasmania.

For Thursday 21 November:

Severe Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts:
North East, East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East 
Very High Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts:
Furneaux Islands, Central North and Central Plateau 
The Tasmania Fire Service advises you to:
  • Action your Bushfire Survival Plan now.
  • Monitor the fire and weather situation through your local radio station, www.fire.tas.gov.au and www.bom.gov.au. 
  • Call 000 (Triple Zero) in an emergency.
For information on preparing for bushfires go to www.fire.tas.gov.au. 
The next warning will be issued by 5pm Wednesday.

Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in Western, Upper Derwent Valley, East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of South East, North East and North West Coast Forecast Districts.

DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE THURSDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON

Weather Situation: A very strong northwesterly flow is developing over Tasmania late Wednesday night ahead of a cool change. The cool change will further enhance winds on Thursday and will cross Tasmania during Thursday afternoon.
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible in western Tasmania from early Thursday morning, then likely in central and eastern Tasmania during the morning and afternoon.
Wind gusts on the Central Plateau and at other elevated locations may see peak gusts of 110km/h during the morning and early afternoon.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds in the evening once the change has crossed the state.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, Queenstown, New Norfolk and Bothwell.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5pm Wednesday.
