Market postponed, festival cancelled, meeting moved

CANCELLATION of this year's Derwent Valley Autumn Festival and the temporary suspension of the New Norfolk High St market are among the latest local impacts of the state's attempt to reduce the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

In other developments, tonight's Derwent Valley Council meeting has been relocated to the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall to allow for the practice of "social distancing". Everyone attending the meeting will be required to sit 1.5m away from each other.

Autumn Festival committee secretary Lisa Clarke this morning announced the cancellation of this year's event. “As much as it pains us, we know this is the right thing to do to keep everyone safe while this pandemic is active," she said. "We thank the Derwent Valley community and all of our sponsors and stallholders for their understanding while we work through the details and hope to see everyone at our 20th anniversary next year.”

New Norfolk Market operator Jessica Cosgrove said the temporary suspension of the Saturday fixture had been made in the interests of public safety. "This situation is constantly evolving; I will continue to keep you updated, and show support to my stallholders at this challenging time for all," Ms Cosgrove said.

Social distancing measures will apply at tonight’s Derwent Valley Council meeting, which has been moved from the New Norfolk Courthouse to the War Memorial Hall on the opposite side of Circle St. "This means that community members, councillors and staff will be required to sit 1.5m away from each other. If you are feeling unwell, especially if you have a fever or flu symptoms, please stay home and keep yourself and others in the community safe," a spokesman said. 

 The New Norfolk Olympic Swimming Pool has today announced its immediate closure in response to public health warnings. This is a week earlier than the anticipated end-of-season closure. Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool's season ended last week.

 The Southern Football League board last night voted to accept the recommendation of the AFL to suspend all games until May 31. This includes playing as well as training. The New Norfolk District Football Club and New Norfolk Junior Football Club have cancelled their training sessions.
