Willow Court weekend

BUSINESSES at the Nurses' Quarters in Willow Court will be closed on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day but they are open all weekend from 10am-4pm. The range of boutique shops now operating from the beautiful Federation building just inside the gates at Willow Court include antiques, clothes, a providor, children's clothes, retro chic, toys and crafts, along with the nearby Patchwork Cafe.

 

The Big River Growers' Market is on again tomorrow and every Saturday until Easter from 8am-noon, on the lawn right opposite the Nurses' Quarters.

 

 

Learn to swim at Bushy Park

CHILDREN'S swimming lessons are available on weekdays at the Bushy Park Pool this summer. Lifeguard Leigh Nichols is offering lessons at a cost of $15 per child, or $10 each if there are multiple swimmers. The times are 9am, 10am and 11am. Lessons run for an hour each and are being offered in two different classes:

Beginner Swimmers: This offers water familiarisation including safe entry to water, head submergence, front floating, and opening eyes underwater. This is for Stage 1 swimmers (4yrs and above), with a maximum of two per class.

Stroke Development: Introduction to and development of swimming strokes including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, survival backstroke and sidestroke. This is for Upper Stage 1 – Stage 2 swimmers (5yrs and above). Participants should be confident in submerging their head, opening their eyes underwater and floating on their stomach without an aid. Maximum of five swimmers per class.

Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool is at 601 Gordon River Rd, Bushy Park, and is open from noon-6pm on weekdays and 10am-6pm on weekends. The solar-heated pool is 33m in length. Facilities include a kiosk and barbecue area.

Sparks to fly on Saturday

THERE will be fireworks both on and off the track at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, near New Norfolk this Saturday night, when the local venue plays host to the Tasmanian V8 Speedway Super Sedan Championship. The super sedan title will be the main feature on a big 26-event program, which also includes the spectacular Mercury Newspaper Fireworks display, giving speedway fans an early taste of New Year celebrations. The support program will include round nine of the Junior Sedan Championship Series, plus racing for V8 AMCAs, lightning sprints, modified production sedans and Tassie sixes, with gates open at 3pm. and racing from 6pm.

Devonport driver Brad Smith will start favourite for the super sedan state championship, with the reigning national champion looking to win his second title on the same track on which he won his first state championship in 2004. Smith has already tasted victory at the southern venue this season – one of three victories on Tasmanian soil, before heading to Queensland for the start of his national series title defence.
Returning to Tasmania for last night’s Geoff Stagg Memorial Race at Carrick, Smith was leading the final before striking driveline problems on lap 21 of the 25-lap final. His first DNF (did not finish) of the season will only spur on the former state champion this weekend in what should be a hotly contested title.

Third-generation V8 driver Callum Harper won at Carrick last night and will be aiming for a similar result in Hobart. Harper, of Hellyer Beach, was challenging Smith for the lead when the Devonport driver’s mechanical problems struck, indicating he is more than capable of taking the battle up to the race-favourite this Saturday night.

Former Australian champion Kevin Purton, of Deloraine, suffered engine dramas at Carrick and will be fired up to make amends, as will Launceston’s Adam Beechey, who qualified third but had his hopes dashed with suspension damage from a first-lap incident with Hobart’s Steve Latham. Latham, who has also been contesting the national series on the mainland, missed out on a podium finish at Carrick, but will be out to turn his fortunes around on his home track, where he also won the 2010 state championship.

Launceston duo Sam Hughes and David Nichols finished second and third at Carrick and will also be aiming to improve in Hobart, with Nichols chasing an unprecedented seventh title in what should be a fiercely contested championship.

Christmas lunch in New Norfolk

A FREE Christmas lunch will be available at the St Matthew's Church Hall in Bathurst St, New Norfolk, from noon on Christmas Day (Tuesday). The lunch is provided by the churches of New Norfolk, particularly for those who may be on their own at Christmas. The theme is "bring a friend or come and make a friend." Brilliant Bryony

OPERA singer Bryony Dwyer was named at number nine in Tasmania's Top 10 Performers in today's issue of the Mercury newspaper. The new categorised Top 10 replaces the newspaper's annual "newsmakers" list.

Bryony, who is now in Austria for a four-month placement with the Vienna State Opera, grew up in the Derwent Valley and still has family in New Norfolk. Congratulations Bryony.

Festival of lessons and carols

IF you missed the Derwent Valley Concert Band's amazing Christmas concert on Wednesday night, there is still one last chance to see and hear them in action this year. The band will accompany the singing at a traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Matthew's Anglican Church, this Sunday at 8pm.

Derwent Valley Concert Band president Layton Hodgetts said the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols had been celebrated at St Matthew's for the last 25 years at least. It has its origins in Truro, Cornwall, in 1880, and has been adapted for use all over the world. Since 1918 it has been an annual fixture at King's College, Cambridge, and from there it has been broadcast to the world since 1928.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Matthew's Church in  Bathurst St, New Norfolk, at 8pm this Sunday will be led by the St Matthew’s Singers and the Derwent Valley Choir, accompanied by the Derwent Valley Concert Band and guest organist Greg Stephens. All welcome.

Steve Balmforth

THE new book on the history of the Plenty district goes on sale in New Norfolk this Saturday and the author will be available for book signing. Former local resident Steve Balmforth has spent several years working on his book titled Glenleith Memories and Stories. It traces the development of the Glenleith property at Plenty in the Derwent Valley as well as the people that lived, worked and grew up on the farm.

Mr Balmforth lived on Glenleith and his family had strong links to the area from the early 1900s. He used Glenleith as the focal point for the book and drew on his own family’s memories and experiences as well as those from a wide range of other locals who spent time or worked on the property

The personal recollections and photographs of those who have supported this project capture a snapshot to an era long past. Details from early records outlining the establishment and ownership of Glenleith, have been recorded together with the families who lived on the property. Input from the Balmforth, McMahon, Menzie, Shaw, Harwood, Johnson, Prentice, Woolford and Rainbird families along with many others provide detailed family history of those who have helped compile the information included in the book. The photographs used have been provided by a wide range of people who have an interest in the activities of the district and depict the people and activities those early days.

Chapters are devoted to the families who lived on the farm, the farm layout, hop picking, the Plenty State School, St John's Church, Plenty football teams, Plenty Memorial Hall, local identities as well as a large number of newspaper articles that  provide an overview of the activities of  the area from the late 1800s.

Glenleith Memories and Stories has been professionally published in A4 format, 100 pages with more than 170 black and white photographs. The book will be available as from December 22 and can be ordered direct with Steve at a cost of $39.95 per copy plus postage if required. The book will be available from the New Norfolk Newsagency from 22nd December 22 and on that day Steve will be present from 10am for personal book signing.

Tribute to Ben Eyles

ON behalf of the cricket fraternity of the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands, I would like to send our condolences to the families of Ben Eyles and his partner Meagan Wilton.

Ben was a fantastic cricketer with the Ouse club for many seasons in the old Derwent Valley Cricket Association where he won seven straight DVCA B-Grade cricketer of the year awards (2001-02 to 2007-08). He played in four premierships with Ouse (1998-99, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08) and won many other association awards.

Ouse Cricket Club went into recess after the 2007-08 season. Last season Ben came back to cricket and played in the grand final with Molesworth I and again played with that club this season.

Ben was a fantastic all-round cricketer and I well remember his innings in the 2005-06 B-Grade grand final at Gretna, playing for Ouse against Molesworth II where he made 127 runs with 100 runs coming in boundaries (10 fours and 10 sixes). Ben always kept us entertained with both bat and ball. There was never a dull moment and he will be sadly missed by all. Rest in peace.

NEW Norfolk II's Leigh Berry recorded a fine century in his team's great win over Richmond/Cambridge in 5th grade on Saturday. Berry made 105 not out in the Red Caps' huge total of 2 for 294 off their 50 overs. He shared a staggering 222 run partnership with young gun Josh Rowlands who made 82 not out. Openers Daniel Taylor, 41 runs, and Dylan Pearce, 18, did well with a 54-run partnership, which could be said laid the foundation for the excellent batting by Berry and Rowlands. In reply Richmond/Cambridge were bowled out for 201 in 46.1 overs. Richard Munnings captured three wickets while the young brigade of Mitchell Rice and Josh Rowlands took two wickets each while N. Gregory took one. Daniel Taylor had a good day in the field, taking three catches.

Thanks to a Troy Smith cricket clinic, Bushy Park continued on with their winning form with comfortable win over St Aidans at Bushy Park on Saturday. Smith captured 4 for 26 off 10 overs then smashed 60 not out to help Bushy win its sixth straight match and have yet another early day. After winning the toss Bushy Park sent St Aidans into bat to make 8 for 87 off 30.2 overs. Smith was the main destroyer with four wickets while Trent Grant took 2 for 26. Veteran Nick Fenton bowled extremely well taking 1 for 7 off 5 overs and Nathan Grant took one. In reply, Bushy Park made quick work of the St Aidans, total hitting the winning runs off just 15 overs. The comeback kid and superstar Troy Smith made a quick 60 while Danny Mason remained 10 not out.

In a rain-affected match at Sandford, Gretna I defeated Sandford in a close game. Gretna won the toss and batted first, making 10 for 173. Opening the batting, Captain Ben Rainbird made a fine 55, Craig Cunningham got 24, Jackson Ackerly is doing very well this season and got 18, while Mathew Burns and Rhys Browning got 12 each and Aaron Maddox 10. Due to rain delays Sandford's target was revised to 157 and they nearly got there, finishing just seven runs short. Ben Rainbird (1 wicket) and Craig Cunningham (2 wickets) kept the pressure on the Sandford batsmen late in the match and picked up the final few wickets to give Gretna its seventh win from nine rounds.     

In the other fifth grade match at Old Beach, Molesworth II were defeated by Old Beach by four wickets. Molesworth won the toss and elected to bat, making 10 for 125. Daniel Coppleman made 29 not out while D. Ambler made 20 and Brad Kemmler made 15. In reply Old Beach finished 6 for 126. Young Daniel Coppleman top-scored for Molesworth and took 3 for 37 to also be the best of the bowlers. Cody Neads did well taking 2 for 27 and Brad Kemmler picked up the other wicket. I hear Brad took a great catch, but didn't know he had it as it nearly winded him. It doesn't matter how you catch it, as long as you do.

In fourth grade on Saturday, Gretna II went down to Dynnyrne at New Town High School by six wickets. Gretna won the toss and had first hit, making the small total of 10 for 120. Stand-in captain Tom Allcock did well top-scoring with 30, Cody Eyles got 13, Brian Smith 11 and Jordan Hastie 10. Nathan Eyles remained 4 not out. In reply Dynnyrne reached the target in the 28th over, finishing 4 for 121. Cameron Emery opened the bowling and got 2 for 32 while Joey Eyles and Adam Browning got a wicket each. 

In the other second grade matches, New Norfolk went down to Rokeby at Clarendon Vale. New Norfolk had first, hit making 9 for 216 off 50 overs, but due to rain interrutions Rokeby had a revised total of 150 to win off 35 overs and reached this in 22 overs. Red Caps captain Glen Williams top-scored with 68 runs while Chris Ashcroft and Ashley Morgan made 28 and Josh Walsh 24. Josh Dykes was the main wicket taker for New Norfolk with 2 while Rohan Heron took the other.

The match between Molesworth I and Derwent at Boyer Oval was a washout.

Tragic couple named

POLICE today revealed the names of the man and woman found dead at Hamilton on Sunday morning. They were Meagan Wilton, 31, and Benjamin Eyles, 34. Condolences to their families and friends.

Glenleith memories and stories

FANS of local and family history will find much to like in a new book about the Plenty district and the Glenleith property in particular. Police investigating valley deaths

POLICE are investigating the overnight death of a man and a woman at Hamilton. Another man was found at Lachlan with a gunshot wound and he is now in the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

Early Christmas at the speedway

CHRISTMAS will come early for southern speedway fans this Saturday night when the thundering, fire breathing V8 sprintcars hit the track at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, near New Norfolk. A talented field of drivers will line-up in the Bendigo Bank Christmas Feature, with any one of a number capable of winning.

Saturday night’s support program will include round seven of the Statewide Junior Sedan Championship Series, plus racing for Formula 500s, wingless sprintcars, street stock sedans, Tassie sixes, sidecars, speedway karts and bombers.

Gates at the Sorell Creek venue will open at 3pm with racing for speedway karts and sidecars from 4pm and the main program getting under way at 6pm. Racing in the street stock sedans division should be hectic, with a large field of 22 cars entered.

In the main event, Launceston veteran Robin Dawkins will start a warm favourite after managing a podium finish last time sprintcars raced here. Dawkins will be keen to finish on the top step this time out, especially after showing awesome form at Latrobe last weekend when he had the final all but won, until he crashed on the second-last lap while leading the race. A momentary lapse in concentration saw the former state champion clipping slower lapped traffic and ending his night on the tow truck.

Former Tasmanian champion “Tornado” Tim Hutchins, of Sassafras, has already tasted victory in Hobart this season and will be keen to repeat the dose this weekend. Hutchins struggled in the heats at Latrobe last weekend but lived up to his tag in the final, storming through the field from grid 10, to finish third and will head south with a fair degree of confidence. Experienced Launceston driver Kurt Luttrell is overdue for a win this season and has been in great form in patches, but will be keen to string together a consistent night.

On his night, Luttrell is equal to the best in the field and after a disappointing result at Latrobe last week when he crashed out of the final on the first lap, he will also be fired up to turn things around this weekend. Fellow Launceston driver and talented teenager Callum Zizek has also shone in patches this season and is arguably overdue for a maiden victory, which could come this Saturday night if things go according to plan.

Twenty20 cricket

NEW Norfolk lost its twenty20 semi-final last Thursday by 25 runs to St Aidan's. St Aidian's won the toss and had first hit, making the good score off 145 off its 20 overs. In reply New Norfolk made 140 for the loss of only four wickets.

I heard there was a delay with one of the St Aidan's players being injured in the field, which resulted in New Norfolk's innings being played out in dark conditions. One has to wonder just how many more times this has to happen - surely these matches can be started earlier! Well done New Norfolk, you gave it your best shot.

IN hot and windy conditions at Gretna on Saturday, Gretna I recorded its first win over Richmond/Cambridge since entering the SCA. Gretna defeated Richmond/Cambridge by 100 runs. All-rounder Mathew Burns scored an excellent century to help his team to victory. Batting at number three, Burns came to the crease with the score at 1 for 33. He took little time to get his eye in and soon hit 114 of which 80 runs came in boundaries (14 fours and 4 6s). He had a 91-run partnership with Damien Hack (37 runs) and a 77-run stand with Jackson Ackerly (24 runs). Burns was dismissed with the total on 6 for 219. Gretna won the toss made a good total of 10 for 267 off 47 overs, defended well and bowled Richmond/Cambridge out for 167. Aaron Maddox bowled extremely well in the hot conditions, snaring 4 for 30 off his 10 overs. His effort was a real team-lifter that got the wickets falling early for Gretna. Craig Cunningham and Peter Jelkic also bowled well, picking up two wickets each, and Ben Rainbird took one. Cricket throws up all sorts of situations and this match was no exception. Umpire Colin Cunningham earned his money in the 33 degree heat.

On the much cooler Sunday, Bushy Park hosted Gretna II at the showgrounds, winning by a massive nine wickets. Bushy won the toss and sent Gretna in to make just 99 runs from 28.1 overs. Joey Eyles was the only Gretna batsman to reach double figures with 13. All the Bushy Park bowlers did very well. The comeback kid Troy Smith captured 4 for 24 off 6.1 overs. Smith may have had even better figures had he been on target - he bowled 11 wides. Brothers Nathan and Dylan Grant both took two wickets as did the ever-reliable Mitch Crosswell. In reply Bushy made fast work of chasing down the small target, reaching the total in just over 11 overs and finishing 1 for 100. Troy Smith capped off a great day, smashing 42 off 20-odd balls. Mitch Crosswell did likewise, making 38no while Damien "Mazda" Madden made 14no. These two clubs have had some great matches over many seasons and there was still plenty of friendly bantter going on even though there was points up for grabs. Congratulations to Gretna's Nick Wakefield who played his 50th club game.

New Norfolk I lost its first match since round two, going down to Runnymede by 73 runs at Tynwald Park. Runnymede had first hit and made the good score of 8 for 229. Spinner Ashley Morgan did very well, taking 4 for 52 off his 10 overs, Josh Dykes got two wickets while Stewart Rice bowled well also, 1 for 15 off 10 overs. In reply New Norfolk couldn't withstand the Runnymede bowling and was dismissed for 156 off 33.2 overs. Ashley Morgan tried hard with the ball and top-scored with a well made 43, but had little assistance. Tomas Hanson is doing very well at the moment and made 28. Stewart Rice made 19, Rohan Heron 15 and captain Glen Williams 13.

Molesworth I also went down, losing to the under-rated Sandford by 61 runs at Sandford. Molesworth won the toss and sent the home side into bat for a defendable 10 for 182 off 47.5 overs. Brad Coppleman bowled very well snaring five wickets for Molesworth. 49 extras to Sandford didn't help the visitors at all. In reply Molesworth were all out for 121 after 33.1 overs. No Molesworth figures were available at the time of writing.

In 5th Grade New Norfolk II went down to Rokeby at Caburys by eight wickets. The Red Caps won the toss, had first hit and were bowled out for 124 off 36.5 overs. Chris Ashcroft top-scored with 43 while captain Stephen Nichols, Jamie Hill and Mark Thurston all scored 15 runs each to be the other main scorers. Ashcroft and Thurston did a great job for their team, putting on a 52 run partnership to rebuild the innings, but when Ashcroft was out the wickets kept falling. In reply Rokeby reached the score in just 21 overs finishing 2 for 125. Mark Thurston bowled very well for New Norfolk and finished with 2 for 19 off 5 overs.

In the other 5th Grade match Molesworth II went down to Richmond/Cambridge at Boyer by 101 runs. The visitors made 8 for 231 off their 50 overs with Tim Nichols and S. Evans the main wicket takers for Molesworth. In reply Molesworth made 10 for 130 off 35.1 overs. No other details were available at the time of writing.

The consistent Jack Stevenson made 30 runs (five 4s) before retiring, Grant Booth made 7, and Tristian Carmichael was 6no. St Anne's replied with 8/38 from 14.2 overs. Bushy Park's back in the swim

THE Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool has reopened for another summer season. Opening day was last Thursday, and there was a big crowd of more than 90 swimmers when local temperatures soared on Saturday.

Lifeguard/caretaker Leigh Nichols and the pool committee have the pool and surrounds looking great. As the picture shows, today's temperature peaked at 31 and the solar-heated pool was a comfortable 26 degrees.

The 33m outdoor pool is open from 3-6pm on weekdays (this will change to noon-6pm during the school holidays). On weekends the pool opens at 10am.

Hometown honour for Olympian Anthony

ST PATRICK'S College in Ballarat has named one of its rowing boats after triple Olympic medallist, 2011 world champion and former student Anthony Edwards. The recently-retired five-time Olympian is a member of the New Norfolk Rowing Club and works for Rowing Tasmania.

Council AGM

THE Derwent Valley Council's annual general meeting will be held this Thursday, December 13, in the New Norfolk Courthouse at 6pm. The annual report can be downloaded from the council website here, or obtained in hardcopy from the council chambers.

The AGM is an opportunity to ask questions about the council's activities over the last financial year and to propose motions from the floor. If carried by the members of the public present, these motions must be considered at the next council meeting.

The December council meeting will follow the AGM at 6.30pm.

Golden girl visits New Norfolk

SHE'S one of Australia’s best-known Olympic swimmers but it took the launch of a solar energy system for a Tasmanian business to make Brooke Hanson feel like a fish out of water.

Hanson mixed with local schoolchildren – and 500,000 fish - at the Inland Fisheries Service (IFS) hatchery at New Norfolk last week where she declared the facility’s solar energy system operational, on behalf of installer Powercom.

“I’ve seen plenty of solar energy systems for heating pools but this is the time I’ve been asked to commission one to keep a pool cold,” she said. “When it comes to the science of raising sustainable salmon and trout, I’m clearly out of my depth. I do know, however, that Inland Fisheries and Powercom are making a major contribution to the sustainable well-being of recreational fishing, which is a key industry for Tasmania.”

Powercom, an electrical manufacturing and renewable energy company based in Kingston, won a visit from Brooke after being declared Tasmania winner of the Telstra “Go for Business Gold” competition. Hanson was one of Australia’s most prominent swimmers of the 2000s, winning gold and silver medals at the Athens Olympic Games.

The IFS is responsible for managing Tasmania’s freshwater resources and recreational fishing. The Powercom system was a major upgrade to solar energy systems already operating at the New Norfolk hatchery and provides 70 per cent of energy for the facility’s cooling needs. “Maintaining trout holding tanks at a constant temperature of 14-15 degrees is critical to raising healthy fish prior to them being used to restock Tasmania’s inland waterways,” IFS deputy director Tony Wright said.
 
Powercom general manager Mark Wild said a focus of the day’s event was a question and answer session and lunch with Brooke and 40 students from Fairview, Molesworth, Maydena and Westerway primary schools at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms. "Our community's young leaders need inspiring figures in their lives and hearing from Brooke was a fantastic opportunity that needed to be shared,” Mr Wild said.

Brooke Hanson was born in Manly, NSW, and now lives in Melbourne. Her family took her to swimming lessons from the age of four after she nearly drowned twice. At the Athens Olympics she won a gold relay medal and a silver individual medal in the 100 metres breaststroke. She retired from the sport in November 2007 and has a career as a TV host, public speaker and mum.

Brooker Highway night closure

Night resurfacing works will be undertaken on the Brooker Highway from Sunday 9 December to Thursday 13 December, weather permitting.

The northbound lanes of the Brooker Highway from the Austins Ferry off-ramp to Black Snake Lane on-ramp will be closed from 7pm to 7am on Wednesday 12 December due to night resurfacing works, weather permitting.

Light Vehicles Detour - From the Brooker Highway, take the Austins Ferry off ramp and follow Arncliffe Road overpass to Main Road Granton, joining onto Black Snake Lane on-ramp.

Heavy Vehicles Detour - Take Goodwood Main Road across the Bowen Bridge to the East Derwent Highway and join the Midland Highway at the East Derwent Highway roundabout.

Southbound traffic heading toward the city will be unaffected.

Motorists are reminded to take care and obey all traffic signs. This is to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians and employees until works are completed.

Picture perfect parade

New Norfolk Christmas Parade

HUNDREDS turned out to watch the New Norfolk Christmas Parade earlier today. Held in brilliant sunshine, the annual pageant had a terrific range of entries and each run of High St took about 20 minutes.

The event concluded with Santa Claus riding along High St in the Lions Club train while the Derwent Scottish Pipe Band performed outside the post office.

After the event, parade organiser Ngaire Glover announced the winners of a raffle conducted in aid of college student Leah Kelly's upcoming scholarship trip to the Los Angeles. The winners were Sandra Pullen (first) and Tracey Malone (second).

Deputy mayor Barry Lathey announced the following Derwent Dollar winners after the parade:

High St will be closed from 11.30am until 1pm and everyone in the area is asked to observe the directions of State Emergency Service personnel who will be managing the road closures.

After the parade, participation awards will be announced outside the council chambers at 1pm. The Derwent Scottish Pipe Band will perform outside the post office for a short while after the parade.

Portable gas and electric barbecues may be used provided:

• The barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings).

Additional conditions that apply to the use of portable electric and gas fired barbecues and barbecues in public reserves and campsites:

•     the area for 3 metres around and above the barbecue is completely cleared of flammable material.
•     an adult is in attendance at all times
•     a tap with hose connected is ready for use
•     at least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of emergency.

ABC investigates hospital sale

THE slow-burning issue of the value of the Royal Derwent Hospital/Willow Court hospital site at the time of its sale, will be aired on ABC TV tonight. The Tasmanian edition of the 7.30 program claims that the vast property in New Norfolk was valued at $45 million when it was sold to a consortium including the Derwent Valley Council for about $500,000 in 2001. A promotion airing on ABC Radio says tonight's 7.30 program will reveal what really happened when the government disposed of the property.

Speedweek set to excite

TASMANIAN motorsport fans are set for thrills early next year, when speedway’s version of V8 supercars come together for the inaugural Speedweek Spectacular, combining two of the state’s premier blue-riband events. The week-long celebration will combine two of the state’s longest running speedway feature events, continuing a 40-year history of hosting major events at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, near New Norfolk, and the Bendigo Bank Arena at Latrobe, on January 26-27 and February 2-3.

Both venues are owned and operated by Latrobe Speedway Pty Ltd, which has been supported by Events Tasmania, to reinvent the timely positioning of the southern venue's Tasmanian Grand National and Latrobe's Grand Prix events into a Speedweek Spectacular. The Grand National is Tasmania’s longest-running speedway feature race, first held in 1971, while the $45,000 Grand Prix has been running since 1974 and has been Australia’s richest speedway sedan event since 1993.

The inaugural speedway spectacular will be branded as a not-to-be missed event for all super sedan racing enthusiasts Australia-wide and the main event on the 2012-13 Tasmanian speedway calendar. Latrobe Speedway events manager Guy Thompson said the event would see a gathering of competitors, patrons and their families for one super week of jam-packed and thrilling gala activities incorporating two of Australia's most prestigious super sedan races. “Super sedan racing is Speedways equivalent of the V8 supercars,” he said. “It enjoys a very strong following from both competitors and fan bases alike, to the extent that our two events have received extremely strong mainland competitor support and attracted significantly large numbers of patrons.”

“We’re encouraging the competitors and Tasmanian racegoers to take up the opportunity to see our beautiful state and all it has to offer by extending their stays after the super sedan racing and visiting other areas of our island state,” Mr Thompson said. “Speedweek 2013 gives us an incredible window of opportunity to offer Tasmanian and interstate enthusiasts and competitors a fantastic week of special events and functions and opportunities. Further developing and combining these incredible major races and activities, our partnerships can be leveraged to such a degree that has not been seen in the past.”

Banjos back and baking

BANJO'S Bakery Cafe reopens in New Norfolk at its new premises at 20 High St at 6am tomorrow. The new location in the former GN Electrical Retravision store is just a few doors down from its original spot on the corner of High and Burnett Sts, destroyed by fire earlier this year.

The new bakery will be open from 6am-6pm, seven days a week and there is a Facebook page here. Congratulations to all concerned.

Quiz night success

MAGRA Fire Brigade's annual quiz night on November 30 attracted more than 140 people including Rebecca White MHA. The event had sponsorship from more than 50 local businesses, organisations and individuals and raised nearly $2500. While some of the proceeds will be used by the brigade, much will be donated to local charities. Earlier this year the brigade donated $500 to the Rose Ackerley appeal.

Magra Fire Brigade thanks all of the sponsors who donated cash and prizes, making the event a great success and a wonderful night for all who attended. "We look forward to the same support in 2013, where this event will be bigger and better," spokesman Paul McMaster said.

MOLESWORTH I went one better than their tie of last week by defeating Gretna I at Boyer Oval on Sunday. In a match that could have gone either way, Molesworth won the toss and having first hit made a defendable total of 150. Nick Piuselli 39 runs and M. Siely 28 runs got their team of to a great start with a 63-run opening partenership, but from here things slowed up. Nathan Eizsele made 21 down the order as did Chris Slater who is back in the team making 18. Others to chip in were the Coppleman brothers Daniel with 14 and Brad with 10. Peter Jelkic and Mathew Burns were the main Gretna wicket takers with three each while Craig Cunningham picked up two and Bruce Emery finished with excellent figures of 1 for 13 off 10 overs. In reply Gretna got off to a bad start losing three wickets with just 23 runs in the book and with wickets falling regularly the job got harder. Capatin Ben Rainbird, 47 runs, put up a great fight and at one stage it looked like the Gretna boys may get over the line, but it wasn't to be, being bowled out for 124. Bruce Emery made 18 and Mathew Burns 12. four of the five Molesworth bowlers took wickets with two each. Brad Coppleman was the best with excellent figures of 2 for 8 off six overs. Youngster Cody Neads wore the gloves for Molesworth and took one catch. Well done Cody.

767 runs in two weeks, now that's batting. New Norfolk I who are in magical form so far this season, sent out a warning with another excellent display of cricket. The Red Caps amassed a huge total of 398 of their 50 overs batting first against a hapless Bagdad outfit at Bagdad. All-rounder Stewart Rice had a real day out making 92 runs with the bat and then picked up four wickets to be the main contributor for the day. But it wasn't just a one man show with all the New Norfolk bastman making double figures except two - Josh Dykes remained 4 not out and Mark Thurston did not bat. Two other batsmen made half-centuries, Ashley Morgan 59 and Thomas Hanson who played his first match for New Norfolk I made 55. The biggest partnership came from Rice and Morgan who put on 121 for the fourth wicket. In reply Bagdad were all out for 102. Stewart Rice collected four wickets while Josh Dykes got 2 to be the main Red Cap wicket-takers. New Norfolk have now won five on the trot and it's hard to see them losing many games at the rate they are going.  
 
Gretna II bounced back from its big loss last week by defeating McRobies Gully by seven wickets on Saturday at Gretna. Gretna all-rounder Cameron Emery shone with both bat and ball to help his side get back on the winners list. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up the competable total 172 before being bowled out in the 42nd over. Emery who took 4 wickets claimed the top three McRobies Gully batsmen, mounting great pressure on the other batsmen for Cody and Joey Eyles and Todd Jarvis who took two wickets each. In reply Gretna made light work of the target losing just the three wickets with Emery making 41, while captain Todd Jarvis was just as good with 40 not out. Brian "Red Ink" Smith did his usual bit making 35 not out, while Nick Wakefield chipped in with 17.

Bushy Park who lost their first three matches of the season won their fourth match in a row on the weekend by defeating Marquis Tigers by 45 runs at the Bushy Park Showgrounds. Wicket-keeper/batsmen Shaun Fenton who also took four catches, batted well making a fine 65 and along with a solid 39 from Danny Mason and 25 from Damien Madden the Bushy boys racked up 212 off their 50 overs. In reply the Tigers gave it a great shot, but just couldn't handle the bowling of young Trent Grant. Grant skittled the Tigers attack to take 5 for 36 to help his team to another great victory. Grant was well backed up by Nick Fenton 2 wickets and Mitch Crosswell and Danny Mason one each. The Bushy Park team are showing some signs of form from last season of which they made the grand final and this weeks match against Gretna II is looking to be a great match of the two local teams.

Molesworth II made it a double for the club winning a close match against Rokeby at Boyer Oval on Saturday. Molesworth won the toss but sent Rokeby in to bat. They made a modest total of 10 for 147. It was veterans day for Molesworth II with Martyn Evans, Dion Hay three wickets each and Dean King taking two, while youngster Jye County also got two. In reply Molesworth chased down the runs with just two wickets in hand. Opener Dean King put to bed any chance of retiring top scoring with 55, hitting three 4s and three 6s along the way. S. Evans made 36 and Sean "Paddy" Hay made 14 while Shannon Long got 10. With eight down and 13 runs needed the combination of evergreen Ricky Neads 5 not out and the keen Blase Reed 7 not out, saw their team get over the line.

New Norfolk II lost their match against Wellington at Tynwald Park on Saturday by five wickets. The Red Caps won the toss and elected to bat making 157. Jamie Hill lead the way making his first half century for the club making 58, Captain Stephen Nichols chipped in with 28 while opener Jamie Maddox got 20 and Josh Walsh made 11. In reply Wellington lost just the five wickets in chasing down the Red Caps total. New Norfolk had five individual wicket takers, but this wasn't enough to contain the Warriors batsmen who got the job done comfortably with nearly 25 overs remaining.

THERE was a good hometown representation at singer Bryony Dwyer's farewell concert in Hobart on Sunday.

The former Molesworth girl returned home from Sydney for a one-off fundraising afternoon to help cover some of the costs of her upcoming four months in Austria as the winner of Opera Foundation Australia's Vienna State Opera Award. A $100 contribution was received from the Derwent Valley Council.

River transport returns

A WATER taxi proved an unusual sight on the River Derwent at New Norfolk last week. New Norfolk News reader Martyn Evans snapped these photos on his mobile phone and had a chat with Rod, the operator, who transported a dozen or so cyclists upriver.

  

"Rod said the cyclists who came up to the Valley said it was amazing that once you got past Bridgewater you could see masses of ducks, swans, pelicans and other birdlife - a totally different view of what you could see further down the estuary," Martyn said.

 

 

Bushfire advice - Glenlusk

THE 61-hectare bushfire at Glenlusk has now been contained. Fire crews and 13 vehicles remain on scene and will use favourable weather conditions over the next few days to consolidate the fire boundary. The latest bushfire advice follows.
