Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

Christmas calendar

THERE'S a lot happening in the Derwent Valley in the lead-up to Christmas and the New Year. Here's a calendar of Christmas events coming up over the next few weeks. Additional items can be emailed to newnorfolknews@gmail.com



  • December 16 (Sunday): Derwent Valley Community Market, 10am-2pm at the Derwent Valley Community House, The Avenue, New Norfolk.
  • December 16 (Sunday): Christmas market, 10am-3pm, Nurse's Quarters, Willow Court, The Avenue, New Norfolk. Barbecue, stalls, children's activities, face painting.
  • December 19 (Wednesday): Meet Santa at Glasser & Parker New Norfolk, 37 High St, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm.
  • December 19 (Wednesday): Christmas concert with the Derwent Valley Concert Band, 7.30pm  in the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall, Circle St. Featuring music from Poland, Ukraine, UK, USA and France. Highlights include the band's saxophone quartet and brass quintet, as well as young Hobart soprano Petronella van Tienen.
  • December 20 (Thursday): Meet Santa at Glasser & Parker New Norfolk, 37 High St, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm.
  • December 21 (Friday): Meet Santa at Glasser & Parker New Norfolk, 37 High St, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm.
  • December 22 (Saturday): Meet Santa at Glasser & Parker New Norfolk, 37 High St, 11am-1pm.
  • December 23 (Sunday): Christmas nativity, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 9.30am.
  • December 23 (Sunday): Bring-and-share meal, Parish Hall, St Matthew's Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 6.30pm.
  • December 23 (Sunday): Traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 8pm. Led by the St Matthew’s Singers and the Derwent Valley Choir, accompanied by the Derwent valley Concert Band and guest organist Greg Stephens.
  • Christmas Eve December 24 (Monday): St Peter's Catholic Church, Hillside Crescent, New Norfolk, services at 6pm and 9pm.
  • Christmas Eve December 24 (Monday): Christmas Eucharist, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 11pm.
  • Christmas Day December 25 (Tuesday): Christmas family eucharist, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 9.30am.
  • December 29 (Saturday): Fireworks spectacular at Mountain Dew Raceway, Lyell Hwy, Sorell Creek, from 4pm including racing for super sedans (state title), junior sedans, bombers, lightning sprints, AMCAs and modifieds. Entry $25 adults, $22 concession, students 13-17 $20, 12 and under free. More
  • January 1 (Tuesday): The Gretna Village Market will present a family fun day at the Gretna Recreation Ground on New Year’s Day. Phone 6286 1275 for more information.  
  • January 12 (Saturday): Monster Trucks at Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, Sorell Creek, from 6pm.
  • January 20 (Sunday): Open day at Frescati House, Willow Court, The Avenue, New Norfolk, 2-5pm. Bring any memories, memorabilia and photos of the house, garden and surrounds. Refreshements provided. Contact Sandra for more information, phone 6261 2631
