Banjos slab to stay

CONTRARY to earlier advice from the Derwent Valley Council, the latest information is that the cement slab at the site of the recent fire in High St will remain in place until the corner is redeveloped. Council general manager Stephen Mackey had originally said further road closures would be required to allow the slab to be removed prior to Easter. It was then announced that this had been deferred until after Easter in order to limit further disruptions in the central business district.

Speaking after a councillor workshop on Thursday night, Mr Mackey said the slab had been treated with a sealant and would now remain in place until work started on a replacement for the Lee building lost in last month's fire.

  1. Any ideas when work might start on a redevelopment?

  2. And yet again we have to find out second hand what is happening in our town, what the hell is wrong with council, surely a press release is not too much to ask, the general Manager and or the Major need to start to take some responsibility for this community, and the other EIGHT COUNCILLORS need to start asking questions and demanding that the major and general manager start to inform the community of what is going on. It should not take an initiative from a business owner to get information out to the general public. Thanks Ray, don’t suppose you would be interested in running for Major? The one we have has gone to sleep at the wheel.
Is it so bloody hard for a council officer to walk the street and inform businesses what is going on? Has anyone else heard the rumour that the Banjo’s site is to be sold? Come on council what is going on?
On another note, the members of the willow court and barracks working group must be thrilled at the complete lack of consultation in regards to the visit from the QLD ghost hunters, no wonder nothing gets done down there, what’s the point of having a committee if you don’t consult with them, wasn’t that the point of Councillor Besters motion to council? To work with and recognize the volunteers? What was the point of Councillor Lester’s motion to have the committee table a report in order for everyone to start to work together? If I was one of those councillors I would be asking some serious questions, as a matter of fact all councillors should be doing the same.

  3. Some years ago when a (former) business owner was building on the High and Burnett streets corner, he said that the building had to comply with a council direction (presumably a planning or maybe a title) and leave room for road expansion, that's why all the buildings entrances on the other corners were also at an angle (and look fine as well) This obviously excluded the existing older Lees building, but now that there is to be rebuilding on that site, can we presume that the main entrance will now also be at an angle?
Aesthetically that would look great (and of course morally, all would be treated equally). Anyone know?
