There is a small  bushfire at GLENLUSK ROAD, GLENLUSK .

The fire danger rating in this area is forecast to be high. Fire under these conditions can be difficult to control.

This fire may affect the communities of Berriedale off Collinsvale Rd; Coopers Rd; Faulkners Rd, Glenlusk; Collinsvale and Glenlusk within the next hour.

This bushfire is currently not controlled.

There may be embers, smoke and ash falling on Berriedale off Collinsvale Rd; Coopers Rd; Faulkners Rd, Glenlusk; Collinsvale Rd between lime kiln and Glenlusk.

Reported road closures: Glenlusk Rd.

Weather Situation
A trough currently lies over Tasmania with a weak cold front near the west coast, as a high pressure system moves away to the east. The trough and cold front will cross the state today, as another cold front moves over the Bight and a deep low moves to the distant southwest of the state.

For the rest of Friday, November 30:
Very High Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts: Upper Derwent Valley and South East
Temperatures reaching the low 30s and relative humidities lowering to around 20%, with northwesterly winds averaging around 35 km/h are expected Friday afternoon.

The Tasmania Fire Service advises you to:

•     Check your bush fire survival plan - now.
•     Monitor the fire and weather situation on ABC radio or through www.fire.tas.gov.au.
•     If power supplies fail, listen on your car radio.

Total fire ban today

No fires may be lit or be allowed to remain alight in the open air until 11.59pm.

Tools and equipment that use a naked flame or generate sparks such as welding or grinding, must not be used in the open air.

If essential works are required to be done a special permit may be issued, after a thorough investigation of each application. Apply to your TFS Regional Office.


Barbecues that use wood, charcoal or other solid fuel are banned
Gas and electric barbecues are permitted subject to the strict application of the conditions set out below.
Gas and electric barbecues provided in public reserves/campsites may be used providing:

•     the barbecue is electric or gas fired
•     the barbecue is fixed permanent structure.

Portable gas and electric barbecues may be used provided:

• The barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings).

Additional conditions that apply to the use of portable electric and gas fired barbecues and barbecues in public reserves and campsites:

•     the area for 3 metres around and above the barbecue is completely cleared of flammable material.
•     an adult is in attendance at all times
•     a tap with hose connected is ready for use
•     at least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of emergency.

Commercial caterers are required to obtain a special permit from your TFS Regional Office.

Redlands Estate open to visitors

A CONVICT-BUILT bakehouse is the latest addition to the expanding visitor attraction at Redlands Estate, near the Salmon Ponds at  Plenty. Premier Lara Giddings visited this morning to officially open the property to the public.Ms Giddings said the "Old Bakehouse" built upon the previously announced whisky distillery at Redlands.

"Redlands Estate is working with the Pigeon Whole Bakery in Moonah and Callington Mill to produce an artisan bread that will reinforce Tasmania's reputation for unique, high quality produce," Ms Giddings said. "This builds on February's announcement of the Redlands whisky distillery and tourism project which will establish Redlands Estate as a major culinary tourist experience.

"In today's competitive tourism market, it's more important than ever that we continue to create top quality experiences that attract visitors and exceed their expectations. This partnership between Redlands Estate, Pigeon Whole Bakery and the Callington Mill is an example of how collaboration and innovation is helping to grow jobs and opportunities in the tourism industry. This move into bread production will support the creation of jobs at Redlands Estate, the Callington Mill in Oatlands and the Pigeon Whole Bakery in Moonah."

Twenty20 cricket

NEW Norfolk keeps rolling on in the Twenty20 format, defeating Old Beach by 12 runs on November 20. Jake King again got amongst the runs as did Morgan and Heron. All New Norfolk bowlers did their bit, with Stewart Rice being the best with 2 for 10. If New Norfolk defeat St Aidans next week they will book themselves a spot in the grand final. Let's hope they can - it would be great to see the Red Caps take the title, but I guess it's  best to take it one mtach at a time.

NEW Norfolk I opener Rohan Heron scored a mammoth 166 not out in his team's big win over Derwent at Tynwald Park on the weekend. Heron has been in good form of late and batted for the entire innings of 50 overs. He shared two staggering partnerships, starting with a 197-run opening stand with the in-form Jake King and later scoring 106 runs with Stewart Rice. Heron's innings is the highest so far this season and it will take some beating. Rice and King, who are both batting well this season, made 89 and 60 respectively. Jamie Maddox remained 14 not out and also bowled very well, restricting Derwent to 10 for 229.

The New Norfolk bowlers were again on target. Maddox took 4 for 32 off his 10 overs while Ashley Morgan claimed 3 for 29. Josh Dykes picked up 2 and Stewart Rice capped off the day taking 1. This is a huge win for the Red Caps who are in some excellent form and I notice that Mathew Smith had a run in the team. If he can produce the great cricket that he is capable of, then New Norfolk will be even harder to beat.

New Norfolk II capped off a great weekend on Sunday with a 9-wicket win over Molesworth II at Boyer Oval. The win was mainly due to the superb bowling of Josh Walsh who took 6 for 45. Walsh skittled through the Molesworth batsmen who were dismissed for 111. New player Chris Pearce picked up two wickets while up-and-comer Mitchell Rice took 2 for 24. Of the Molesworth openers, Dean King did well making 34, while Mathew Hay again did well for his team with 28. In reply New Norfolk II had little trouble reaching the target, losing just the one wicket. David Maddox scored 56 while Leigh Berry remained 25 not out as did wicket-keeper and opening batsman Dylan Pearce with 23no.

Bushy Park sure are making a habit of keeping the opposition to very low score of late. This time they cleaned up McRobies Gully for just 52 runs. The Bushy bowling attack sure have been on fire. The Grant brothers Trent and Dylan were very miserly, with Trent taking 3 for 9 and Dylan 3 for 10. Mitch Crosswell was just as good with 2 for 9 and Troy Smith who has slipped back into the team well after about five years off took 2 for 21. In reply Bushy had no trouble in scoring the runs finishing 1 for 55 off just 6.1 overs. Mitchell Crosswell made 26no and Geoff Crosswell made 16no.

Molesworth I had the closest match of the weekend when they tied with Richmond/Cambridge at Richmond. The home team won the toss and elected to bat, making the modest total of 10 for 167 with brothers Daniel and Brad Coppleman being the main wicket takers with three  each. In reply Molesworth made 9 for 167 off their 50 overs. In the dying stages they were 9 for 145 with still 22 needed. New player Aaron Triffitt and Ricky Neads batted well together to give the team a chance of victory, but it wasn't to be. Following last week's report I have been informed that it is just Molesworth's junior teams that are called the Stars.

In the other second grade match, Gretna I easily accounted for the Montagu Bay Sharks at Geilston Bay on Saturday with a six wicket win. The Sharks won the toss and elected to bat, making 10 for 152. The opening bowlers for Gretna, Corey Ransley and Aaron Maddox, did well picking up three wickets each. In reply Gretna took little time in accounting for the runs, finishing 4 for 153 off just 20.3 overs. Mathew Burns has batted well for his team so far this season and made 77. His innings includes  eight 4s and three 6s. Glenn Blackwell made a quickfire 55 not out. He hit eight 4s in his time at the crease and also got three catches for the day in his usual role as keeper. Jackson Ackerly also made quick work of it, scoring 12no with two 6s.

Gretna II suffered their first loss since round two, easily beaten by 210 runs by Hobart at Risdon Vale. Hobart won the toss and batted first, hitting up the big score of 9 for 326. Adam Browning was the main wicket taker for Gretna with three while captain Todd Jarvis and Josh Farrow got two each. In reply Gretna was never in the hunt, bowled out for 116. Nick Wakefield made 35 while young Josh Farrow made 24 including two 4s. Brad Prentice made 16 and Jordan Hastie 10. It was great to see Josh Farrow and Nathan Eyles play their first senior matches. Josh is a fourth generation player at Gretna and did really well with both bat and ball and also got a run out. Nathan made the first 100 for the Gretna juniors a few weeks back and has a lot of talent. His Dad and brother both play with Gretna II.

Speedway champions strut their stuff

REIGNING V8 speedway champions took the main honours at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, near New Norfolk, on Saturday night, with current national super sedan series champion Brad Smith and reigning state sprintcar champion Jason Dawkins both scoring impressive victories in their respective finals.

In the Super Sedan Sizzler, Smith, of Devonport, capped off the perfect preparation for his national series defence, which starts in Queensland next week. Smith won both heats convincingly and qualified on pole position for the 20-lap final and led from start to finish to record his third consecutive victory on Tasmanian tracks this season. Fellow North-West Coastal driver Callum Harper, of Hellyer Beach, took the race up to Smith in the early stages, but the Devonport driver was able to find drive on a slick track and open a decisive break after six laps. Devonport rookie and former junior sedan driver Ethan Cole showed plenty of promise to finish third after starting behind experienced veterans Leon Cleary, of Hobart, and Devonport’s Grant Hopkins, but passing them both in the final to claim a well-deserved third. The win gave Smith plenty of confidence ahead of his national series title defence, claiming it was the most confident he had ever felt heading into his seventh national series.

Meanwhile reigning Tasmanian sprintcar champion Dawkins was equally impressive in his final, but had to work hard for victory after starting on grid four for the 30-lap decider. Dawkins, of Launceston, started strongly and had worked his way up to second after eight laps, when fellow Launceston driver Jamie Bricknell was involved in a crash which halted the race. Bricknell had started on pole position for the final after a first and a second in his heats and led the race early. However, he made heavy contact with a lapped car and then the wall, ending his night on the tow truck. Bricknell suffered a similar fate, coincidentally with the same lapped car, a month ago at the southern track when he had the race in his keeping and will keen to dismiss any thoughts of a Hobart hoodoo when he next races at the venue. With Bricknell’s demise, Dawkins inherited the lead and led the field at the subsequent re-start, pulling out a large break over the remaining laps and lapping all but the top four, to win convincingly from Mark House, of Forest, and Launceston’s Kurt Luttrell.

On the same program, Longford’s Bruce Pitt was too good in the second round of the Super Series for Lightning Sprints, winning both heats, qualifying on pole position for the final and leading from green light to chequered flag to score his second consecutive round victory and take a decisive lead in the series. Sassafras driver Luke Redpath and current state champion Kerry Short, of Burnie, came out on top in a  battle for the minors, to take s share of equal second in the series.

Hobart’s Daniel Brooks scored a thrilling win in the V8 AMCA final after a race-long battle with Latrobe’s Kallan Muir. The pair raced side by side for a number of laps, swapping and changing the lead, before Muir over-cooked his run to the line, coming unstuck on the last lap, but recovering to claim second ahead of  Hobart’s Shaun Kelly. Penguin’s Terry Watson made a brilliant start in the wingless sprintcar final, to score his second consecutive victory after also winning at Latrobe the previous week. Racing back in the pack for the minor placings was close and exciting, with Latrobe driver Scott Bissett getting the better of Devonport’s Chris Breen in the dying stages. Elsewhere on the program, Ulverstone driver Dale Riley Jr picked up his first win in a final this season, leading the street stock sedan final, while Hobart’s Kylie Jetson showed the boys the way home in a bruising bombers final, managing to avoid the carnage for a clean victory.

Valley cleans up at Tidy Towns

THE Derwent Valley has won the 5000-15,000 population category of the Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) Tasmanian Tidy Town Awards for 2012/13. The north-western town of Latrobe won the 2000-5000 population category and also took out the overall title of Tasmania's tidiest town.

Mayor Martyn Evans' strategy for this year's awards was to nominate the whole municipality rather than the town of New Norfolk in isolation.

Molesworth Primary School was awarded equal first place in the primary section of the southern division of the KAB Sustainable Schools Program.


The Tasmanian Tidy Towns program is run by the KAB Tasmania Council with support from the Tasmanian Government and the Packaging Stewardship Forum.

Business on the move

THE annus horribilis in New Norfolk's retail sector looks set for relief by Christmas. Several of the shops left vacant during the year are now in the process of re-opening, with the notable exception of the former Foodworks Supermarket that at one stage was cited as the new location for Banjo's Bakery.

A new business called Not Just Lollies opened today in the former Aunt Irma's shop in Charles St and Banjo's looks to be nearing the end of its extensive renovation of the former Retravision premises at 20 High St. The empty Chickenfeed store looks set to be filled by the Reject Shop, which operates a similar discount business.

Big Red Box has relocated to a temporary location in the former Eyelines premises but is understood to be in the process of transforming to an online business. Details of the new business opening in the original Big Red Box location are still under wraps, as are the future of the former jewellery shop.

Meanwhile there are several more businesses operating from the Nurses' Home in Willow Court, including Maree's Kitchen and OhLahLay Retro Chic joining Morf Antiques, Jackson's Closet, Touch of Earth and Flying Monkey Creative. A Christmas fair has been mentioned coming up on December 16.

Special night at SES

IT was a special occasion at the Derwent Valley unit of the State Emergency Service in New Norfolk tonight. SES director Andrew Lea and Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans headed a group of guests invited to witness the awarding of multiple medals and service pins to long-serving volunteers.

Before the formal part of the evening, unit leader Jason Lawrence showed the council representatives over the two rescue vehicles. The mayor, deputy mayor Barry Lathey, councillor Damian Bester and municipal SES co-ordinator David Bradford heard that the Derwent Valley unit are one of the SES's busiest volunteer units. Weekly training is carried out to a high standard at the SES headquarters on the corner of Blair and George Sts in New Norfolk.

The Derwent Valley SES is responsible for emergency response to severe storms and floods, road crash rescue, search and rescue and a range of general rescue and community support roles in vast area from the Bridgewater Bridge to Strathgordon. State director Andrew Lea said it was his privilege to recognise long and diligent service of local members by presenting service awards. The recipients were:

V8 action at the speedway this Saturday

THERE will be no shortage of speedway action at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway, near New Norfolk, with three V8 divisions headlining an action-packed 26-event program on Saturday night. The main event will be for V8 super sedans, but the program will also include racing for V8 sprintcars, V8 AMCAs, plus the second round of the lightning sprints super series and action from wingless sprintcars, street stock sedans and bombers. Gates at the Sorell Creek venue will open at 3pm and racing will start at 6pm.

The appearance of V8 super sedans at the southern venue this Saturday night will be the first for the season and local drivers Leon Cleary and Steve Latham will be aiming for a home track victory. Veteran Cleary missed a large chunk of last season for various reasons, but has been on the pace in the first two V8 super sedan events of the 2012-13 season to date at Carrick and Latrobe, but has yet to break through for a win. Latham has not raced yet this season and is battling against time to have his car ready for Saturday night, but the former state champion is hoping to be on the track. The man both have to beat is reigning national super sedan series champion Brad Smith, of Devonport, who has won both finals so far this season and has been in awesome form. Fellow coastal drivers Callum Harper, of Hellyer Beach, and Devonport veteran Grant Hopkins have been competitive with Smith at times in recent weeks and will be hoping to get the better of him this weekend.

On the other side of the coin, the three finals for V8 sprintcars so far this season have produced three different winners. Reigning state champion Jason Dawkins, of Launceston, showed blistering pace at Latrobe last weekend to win the final, but didn’t race at New Norfolk last month. That final was won by former state champion “Tornado” Tim Hutchins, of Sassafras, who will be keen to back up again this weekend. Fellow coastal racer Mark House, from Forest, has also posted a win at Latrobe this season and was third behind Dawkins last week, but will be hoping to take his solid home-track form south this weekend. Launceston’s Jamie Bricknell, despite being one of the pacesetters in heats, has yet to win a final this season and will be desperate to break the ice in Hobart, as will fellow Launceston speedster Kurt Luttrell and Devonport youngster Curt Smith, who was second at Latrobe last weekend and on the verge of a big win.

Twenty20 cricket at New Norfolk

THE Twenty20 match between New Norfolk and Gretna last Wednesday at Tynwald Park was an interesting and controversial match with some great knocks by Jake King of New Norfolk and Mathew Burns of Gretna. There was some great hitting throughout both innings and a large crowd tunred up to see the shorter version of our great game.

The match came down to the wire with New Norfolk winning by just four runs. It was just a pity that these matches start at 5.30pm and not earlier. The light towards the end of the match wasn't great to say the least, and the umpires should have stopped the game as the conditions were dangerous. With a pace bowler bowling, New Norfolk were quite within their rights, but surely commonsence must prevail. Had someone been hurt I wonder who would have had the finger pointed at them?

NEW Norfolk I made it three wins on the trot when they easly accounted for Sandford at Tynwald Park on Saturday. Sandford won the toss and sent New Norfolk into bat. The Red Caps hit up an excellent score of 8 for 266 off their 50 overs. Ever-reliable Stewart Rice topped scored with a well-made 71, sharing a 97 run partenership with captain Glen Williams (24). Leigh Berry made 41 in the lower order, teaming up with Josh Rowlands (30no). In reply Sandford had no answers for bowlers with excellent spells from Jamie Maddox 5 for 16 off just 4 overs and Stewart Rice 3 for 18 and Josh Rowlands 2 for 34 to have the Sandford team all out for 130.

BUSHY Park recorded their second win in as many weeks by defeating Derwent by eight wickets. Played at New Town High School the match was all over at lunch time with Bushy skittling through the Derwent batsmen and having them all out for a paltry 41. They couldn't handle the superb bowling of Nathan Grant who finished with 5 for 10 off 10 overs including a runout. Troy Smith was the other multiple wicket taker with 2 for 15. Then opening the batting with Trent Grant, Smith made 11 while Grant made 13no and brother Nathan who could do no wrong made 11no and Bushy finished 2 for 45 in a very comfortable win.

Molesworth I had a good win over Runnymede at Boyer Oval on Saturday. Molesworth had first dig and made the good score of 10 for 238. Run-machine Brad Coppleman again led the way making 70 runs (10 4s and one 6). He was backed up by opener Nick Piuselli (57) and a great 42 runs by the big-hitting Shannon Long also helped. Long's quick fire included three 4s and four 6s, one of which landed in the goal square at the footy clubrooms end and another would've hit a car had it not been moved moments beforehand. Brad Ransley showed great character down the order with a handy 22. Runnymede lost their first wicket at 31, but settled for a short period before losing three wickets with the score on 85 and another with the score at 89. They pushed on and managed to get to 210 which was just 28 runs short of the target. Brad Coppleman finished his day off capturing four of the last five wickets to finish with 4 for 31 while Ricky Martin and Nathan Eiszele both had figures of 2 for 34.

Gretna II  continued on with their winning form defeating the Knights at Gretna by 43 runs. Gretna had first hit, making the competitive total of 10 for 216 with Bruce Emery who came in at first drop making 76no. Joey Eyles made 29, while the younger players Nick Wakefield made 24 and Todd Jarvis 23. The Knights put up a good fight, but couldn't quite match it with Gretna making 10 for 173. Father and son Joey and Cody Eyles teaming up to take three wickets each to be the main destroyers for Gretna.

Gretna I recorded their third win in a row, defeating Derwent at Gretna by 44 runs. Gretna had first hit and at one stage were 3 for 123 but a collapse set in and they lost the last seven wickets for just 47 and were bowled out for 170. Craig Cunningham top-scored with 45 while the in-form batsman Mathew Burns made 31 to the best for the Gretna batsmen. Derwent put up a good battle, but were bowled out for 126 with Craig Cunningham capping off a great day causing havic with his spinners, taking 4 for 22 and also two catches. Mathew Burns finished off his day taking three to be one of the main wicket takers.

In fifth grade New Norfolk II won the toss and sent a short (10 players) Montagu Bay into bat in their match at Tynwald Park. The Red Caps had the Sharks in all sorts of trouble and just about all out with eight wickets down for about 80 runs but a match-saving last-wicket stand by Sharks batsm\en J. Weavell and M. Khattri put on 80-odd to take their total to 162. Ashley Morgan bagged 4 for 26 while Jacob Wessing took 2 for 35. New Norfolk gave the low Montagu Bay score a good shake, but fell 12 runs short. T. Hanson top-scored with 29, while captain Jamie Hill chipped in with 26 and Daniel Taylor made 19.

In the other fifth grade match Molesworth II went down to Wellington by six wickets at Eady St. The Stars had first hit and were dismised for the small total of 83. Captain Mathew Hay again showed great fight making 30no, while S. Evans was the only other batsman to score doulble figures with 15. In reply Wellington lost just the four wickets, reaching the score in 15 overs. Jye County again stood up taking two wickets while Tim Nichols and S. Evans picked one each.

Jack Stevenson made a hard hitting 34 Ret (2-6s & 4-4s), Josh Eyles smashed 20no (3-4s), Blake Eyles 11 (1-4), Ryan Browning 9 retired. New Town responded with 3/111 from 20 overs. Blake Eyles bowled a miserly 1/6 (2 overs), Josh Eyles completed a fine double with 1/11 (2 overs) and Ryan Emery also with a fine double 1/22  (4 overs). UNDER 15: An excellent match was played between Gretna and Molesworth on Sunday. Two stand outs for the match were Josh Farrow of Gretna and Dakoda Smith of Molesworth who both did well with the bat and ball as well as a great job in the field with Farrow also taking two catches. Great sportsmanship was shown by both sides. Molesworth put on a very good day with their two Under 13 sides playing each other before the Under 15s match and a free barbecue for all was much appreciated.

Meet the matron

ONE of the most novel and interesting attractions at this Sunday's Willow Court open day looks to be the performances by Sharon Hutchison as "the matron". Click here for a video preview.

The open day is an initiative of the Friends of Willow Court. Other events on this big day include:

NEW Norfolk I made it two wins in as many weeks by defeating the Montagu Bay Sharks by seven wickets at Geilston Bay at the weekend. The Sharks won the toss and had first dig, but faced some great bowling from the Red Caps' attack. Opening bowlers Josh Dykes (2 for 23) and Josh Rowlands (1 for 27) kept the Sharks at bay with very tidy spells then Stewart Rice (4 for 32) and Rohan Heron (3 for 12) finished the innings off to have Montagu Bay all out for 133. In reply New Norfolk had little trouble reaching the small total, losing just the three wickets with Stewart Rice having an excellent day with both bat and ball making 48 not out while Jake King continued to pile on the runs with 47 to his name.

In-form batsman Bradley Coppleman scored a smashing century to help Molesworth I get back on the winners' list with a massive 160 run win over Bagdad at Bagdad on Sunday. Coppleman belted the opposition bowling attack to all parts of the ground with 76 of his 100 runs coming in boundaries (16 fours and two sixes). Coppleman shared an 82-run partnership with captain Ricky Martin (58) and then a 99-run partnership with Ben Eyles (48). Openers Nick Piuselli (49) and M. Siely (26) also did their bit, putting on a 70-run stand to help see Molesworth score the mammoth total of 7 for 361 off their 50 overs. In reply Bagdad were dismissed for 201 in the 47th over. This was due to some good bowling from Nathan Eiszele (3 for 33) and Brad Kemmler (3 for 37), who were well supported by the teenage brigade of Daniel Coppleman (2 for 13) and Brad Ransley (2 for 44), and another youngster Cody Neads who scored 7no, took two great catches to show that Molesworth have a great future ahead. Molesworth's innings had a total of 30 fours and 16 sixes.

Sunday saw Gretna make it three wins from four matches, defeating Runnymede by six wickets at Runnymede. The home team won the toss and chose to bat, but could not handle the Gretna attack of Craig Cunningham who cleaned up with four wickets while Mathew Burns and Cameron Emery picked up three each to have Runnymede all out for 115. In reply Gretna reached the target with the loss of only four wickets. All-rounder Mathew Burns capped a great day making 63no while opener Damien Hack made a tidy 25. Congratulations to long-time player Glenn Blackwell who played his 300th club game for Gretna on Sunday. Glenn has not only been an excellent player and captain, but also a very good treasurer and hard worker around the club. Let's hope we see Glenn around the club for many more seasons to come. Also congratulations to brothers Adam and Rhys Browning on playing their 50th club games together. These two have a few more to go to catch their dads total of 248.

In fourth grade Bushy Park got their first win on the board by defeating Hobart at home. Hobart had first knock, making a very slow 119 off 50 overs for the loss of eight wickets. Dylan Grant, Nathan Grant and Troy Smith the comeback kid all took two wickets each. In reply Bushy made hard work of things early when they were 0 for 17, then 3 for 17 and 4 for 41. Things steadied somewhat from here and the Park boys finished 7 for 121 to claim a much need victory. Geoff Crosswell has been batting well and was the best run getter for Bushy, making 47. 

Gretna II got their third win by defeating Old Beach at Gretna on Saturday by 91 runs. Gretna won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up a competitive total of 216. Opener Nick Wakefield batted well making 38. Brian Smith made a run for every year of his age, knocking up 50no, but it was Peter Jelkic who stole the show hitting up 75 in about seven overs. Jelkic was on fire hitting five fours and five sixes in an innings that left the Old Beach players wondering what had happened. Jelkic shared a partnership of 93 with Brian Smith, and then Smith put together a 46-run last-wicket stand with experienced hand Joey Eyles. In reply Old Beach could only manage 125 due to some great bowling by all Gretna bowlers. Joey Eyles led the way taking four wickets while his son Cody did well picking up three to be the best of the Gretna attack.

In fifth grade New Norfolk II had a 64 run win over Risdon Vale at Tynwald Park on Saturday. New Norfolk had first hit, making the defendable total of 175 with T. Hanson batting well and top-scoring with 38. Richard Munnings gave good support with 34 runs. Captain Jamie Hill made a handy 24 before being run out while opener Dylan Pearce did well at the top order, making 15. In reply Risdon Vale could only manage 111 before being bowled out in the 24th over. All New Norfolk bowlers did well, with four of the five picking up wickets. Opening pair Graeme Rowlands took 2 for 30 and Richard Munnings 2 for 31. They were well backed up by L. Lewis and Josh Walsh who also grabbed two wickets each. 

Molesworth II didn't have much to write home about after their eight-wicket loss to the Montagu Bay Sharks. Molesworth had only nine players and chose to bat after winning the toss. They were bowled out for 57. Openers Jye County (18) and Mathew Hay (11) were the only batsman to make double figures. The pair gave Molesworth a good start putting on 38 for the opening stand, but the next seven wickets fell for a mere 19 runs. The Sharks had little trouble reaching the small target, losing two wickets in 8.3 overs to claim victory. Youngester Jye County bowled well, taking both wickets to have a good input with both bat and ball. Every team has a bad day and the Molesworth boys will bounce.

Community market this Sunday

THE monthly community market at the Derwent Valley Community House at Willow Court this Sunday will coincide with an open day at the historic site and a swap-meet at the nearby Willow Court Antiques. The market will be on from 10am-2pm as usual, and is held on the third Sunday of every month.

New Norfolk's got talent

TWO New Norfolk girls are off to the United States this summer to take part in workshops organised by the Australian Institute for Performing Arts in conjunction with Los Angeles-based casting directors, agents, managers and coaches. 

They are 17-year-old Rosny College student Leah Kelly and 14-year-old Sacred Heart College student Elyse Barnes. Leah will attend an intensive actors workshop in Los Angeles in January while Elyse will take part in Glee Club Australia’s Talent Development Project next month.

Anyone wishing to assist either girl with the cost of tuition, airfares and living expenses whilst in the US can do so via the Derwent Valley Council.

Great day at Molesworth

A CAR boot sale was held in glorious conditions at the Molesworth Recreation Ground yesterday. It was a warm sunny day with a nice number of people around. There was a well-contested gumboot-throwing competition and in the pet contest the prize for most unusual pet went to a couple of boys and their chook (pictured). The festivities paused at 11am to observe a minute's silence for Remembrance Day.

Making way for the bridge, eventually

FUNDING for property acquisition to enable the future construction of a new Bridgewater Bridge was announced by the Federal Government yesterday.
Federal Infrastructure and Transport minister Anthony Albanese said the $6.4 million would allow affected property owners to plan for the future.

"While construction of the new bridge is some years away, the important work of project planning and design development needs to continue," Mr Albanese said. "Part of that process involves the need to preserve the future footprint of the new bridge and to give certainty to the community whose property will be affected. Consultation with affected land-owners, stakeholders, and community has meant that this footprint has been clearly identified and we can now give these people the option to move on with certainty. It is understandable that affected residents do not wish to be left in limbo for several years. The Federal Labor Government has stepped in at the right time to help those people who want to move, to do so."

State Infrastructure Minister David O'Byrne said that he had met several property owners who wanted to be able to have their property acquired and move on. "We're very pleased we'll now be able to do that. "This investment offers compensation for residents who need it most, so they can get on with their lives with certainty," he said.

Affordable homes opened

FIVE new social housing units opened today will help provide support to Tasmanians on low income in the Derwent Valley, Human Services minister Cassy O'Connor said. Ms O'Connor officially opened the new two-bedroom units located in New Norfolk and which are being managed by the Salvation Army and will be home to older Tasmanians.

"This is another example of the Tasmanian Government working together with the Commonwealth and the community sector to deliver new, affordable homes for Tasmanians on low-incomes," Ms O'Connor said.
"These new units not only offer secure and stable homes, but also a sense of community for residents."

Ms O'Connor said the Salvation Army had received $400,000  from the State and Federal governments to provide secure, affordable and appropriate housing for people on low to moderate incomes. "Community housing is the new way of delivering social housing across Australia, because community housing organisations can leverage funding not available to state housing authorities," she said. "The Salvation Army contributed over $400,000 of their own funds to complete these units."

Welcome to Rosedown

BEAUTIFUL Rosedown garden in New Norfolk will be open to the public this weekend. This romantic garden surrounding an 1840s riverside cottage is a long-time participant in Australia's Open Garden Scheme and owners Ian and Brenda Triffitt will welcome visitors this Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs Triffitt said the garden was not the result of a rigidly planned development. “It was made in my heart rather than my head. It just evolved over the years as more space was needed for yet more roses, trees and perennials, that we had seen in other people’s gardens, in nurseries or in catalogues,” she said.

The couple’s love affair with roses began after they bought Rosedown in 1985. Back then it consisted of a riverside cottage set against towering eucalypts. Now, hundreds of stunning roses including heritage, David Austin and Alister Clark cultivars fill this large garden, which also has a beautiful backdrop of fine specimen trees and vine-covered arbours. Plants are grown for their decorative quality, such as colour, scent and foliage, rather than any strictly controlled colour scheme.

“The majority of the trees are deciduous,” Mr Triffitt said. “The masses of autumn leaves are used as mulch along with shredded prunings, compost and manures which cuts down on watering in the summer.” Many of the trees have been planted to mark special occasions such as marriages of children, births of grandchildren, wedding anniversaries and the passing of loved ones. “In designing and planting the garden we have gained in knowledge, skills and confidence and met and made many friends along the way,” Mrs Triffitt said. “It gives us great happiness to share it with like-minded people.”

Rosedown is at 134 Hamilton Rd (Lyell Hwy), New Norfolk and it will be open from 10am-4.30pm on November 10-11. Admission is $7 (under 18s free).

NEW Norfolk I recorded their first win of the season by defeating Richmond/Cambridge by 111 runs at Richmond on Saturday. The win was a pleasing one for New Norfolk with a number of players contributing in both batting and bowling. Openers Jake King (51 runs) and Dave Maddox (82 runs) put on a 106 run partnership. After three wickets fell with no runs added to the score, veteran Stewart Rice who just gets better with age made a terrific 75 runs. He shared a 104 run partnership with Maddox to help set up a score of 10 for 250. In reply Richmond/Cambridge were bowled out for 139, unable to handle New Norfolk opening bowlers Graeme and Josh Rowlands. Graeme used his many years of experience to finish with fine figures of 4-26 while nephew Josh did likewise with 3 for 17. Josh Dykes bowled very tidily with 1-28 while Josh Walsh also took a wicket.

After last week's thrashing, Gretna I turned things around with a 25-run win over Bagdad at Gretna. The home team won the toss and after electing to bat hit up the good total of 8-201 off their allotted 50 overs. Last week's 300 gamer Mathew Burns made 59 while young up and comer Jackson Ackerly made a valuable 33 as did the in-form Damien Hack with 32 in his 200th club game. Cameron Emery remained 19 not out. In reply Bagdad was bowled out for 176 in the 49th over. Mathew Burns capped off a good day's work taking two wickets. Corey Ransley also took two wickets and by all reports did a great job as stand in captain while Ben Rainbird rests a hamstring injury. In his second game for the season, Peter Jelkic bowled  1-24 off 10. Craig Cunningham bowling spinners took 1 for 33 from his 10 overs while Cameron Emery and Adam Browning also took one wicket each.   

New Norfolk II recorded their first win of the season, defeating Sorell by 45 runs at Sorell. The home team won the toss and sent New Norfolk into bat. Ashley Morgan made a great score of 79 for the visitors and when New Norfolk were 6-88 he put on a 74 run stand with T. Hanson (15no) to get the score to a competitive total of 8-173 of their 50 overs. Dylan Pearce did well and made 24 as an opening batsman. In reply Sorell were bowled out for 128, unable to handle the superb bowling of youngster Mitchell Rice who took 5-41 off his 10 overs. Mitchell is the son of New Norfolk I player Stewart Rice. He is certainly following in his father's footsteps and it wont be long until he is making some big scores with the bat as well. Ashley Morgan finished off a great day taking 2-20 of 10 overs, while Mark Thurston and L. Lewis took a wicket each.

At Tynwald Park on Saturday, Gretna II got back on the winners list by defeating St Aidan's by four wickets. St Aidan's won the toss and had first hit making 10-178. New player and former Ouse cricketer Joey Eyles bowled very well to take 3 for 38 off his 10 overs. Returning to cricket after not playing since 2007-08, his experience will be very handy to the club. Ever-reliable Darren Lennox took 2 for 32 from 10 overs as did Larry Menzie and Nick Wakefield who also captured two wickets each while Cody Eyles, son of Joey Eyles, bowled really well as the other opening bowler, finishing with very tidy figures of 1-21 off his 10 overs. In reply Gretna reached St Aidan's total, making 6-180 off 37 overs. Stand-in captain Nick Wakefield led from the front making an excellent 73 - a great effort as it was his first time as captain. Evergreen Brian Smith made a valuable 27 not out while Ben Shaw and Joey Eyles chipped in with 16 and 14no respectively.

After two wins in a row, Molesworth I suffered a seven-wicket loss to the 2nd Grade pace-setters Rokeby Wanderers. Winning the toss and batting, Molesworth were bowled out cheaply for 90 runs in the 26th over. Daniel Coppleman top-scored with 22 runs, while opening batsman Ben Eyles made 17 and was the other top run scorer. In reply the home team made 3-94 in 19.2 overs to run away easy winners. Brad Kemmler took two wickets while M.Siely took the only other Rokeby wicket.

Molesworth II travelled to Risdon Vale where they went down to the home team by eight wickets. Molesworth had first hit and was bowled out for 124. Batting at number seven, Mathew Hay made a valuable 47 not out (five 4s), well backed up by young Jye County who made an excellent 43. In reply Risdon Vale were never trouble and reached Molesworth's total in 17 overs.

In a close match at the Bushy Park Showgrounds, Bushy Park lost their 4th Grade match to the MacKillop Beltas by three wickets. Bushy won the toss and had first hit making 10-174. Shaun Fenton 26 and Nick Fenton 14 got their team off to a good start with a 44-run opening patenership, but the wicket of Nick Fenton saw two more fall with no addition to the score. Mitchell Crosswell 37 and Geoff Crosswell 43 steadyed things putting on 49 runs together. Troy Smith who has returned to the club and made 18 adding 42 with Geoff Crosswell to take the score to 6 for 150, but from here the team lost its last four wickets for 24 runs. In reply the Beltas were in big trouble early losing their first five wickets for just 33 runs. This collapse was due to the excellent bowling of Nathan Grant who cleaned up the top order, taking 4 for 16. From here the Beltas steadied the ship putting on a 107 run partnership to lift the score to 5 for 140 then finishing 7 for 177 with 2.5 overs remaining. Bushy Park have been very close to a win in the first three weeks and a victory is just around the corner.

Youth league cricket

IN a great team effort the Gretna Under 15s had a big win over St Anne's at Gretna on Sunday. Gretna had first hit, making the big total of 5 for 263 off their 40 overs. Nathan Eyles topped scored with an excellent 105 not out. Nathan was a pleasure to watch, hitting 13 boundaries all over the ground. Reece Williams again batted patiently, making 41, as did Josh Whitford-Marriott
with 31. Captain Daniel Browning made a handy 24. In reply St Anne's were bowled out for 19 runs in just 8.3 overs. Jamie Davidson was the main destroyer with 3-1 as was Josh Farrow taking 3-4 while Jake Campbell and Nick Wakefield got a wicket each.

The Rectory, 2 Bathurst St, New Norfolk. The Rectory is a two-storey Victorian brick house wit  steeply pitched rooves on the corner of Pioneer Avenue and Bathurst St adjacent to St Matthew’s Church and Arthur Square. This garden, which features old elms and oaks, has been beautifully restored with clipped hedges enclosing camellias, roses and maples and three circular gardens setting off a weeping elm, a weeping birch and a weeping cherry.

Valleyfield, Hamilton Rd, New Norfolk. 800m from the New Norfolk Bridge towards Hamilton on the left hand-side, Valleyfield’s garden spreads from the main road to the edge of the Derwent River. It includes oaks, chestnuts, cedars and maples. Many of the trees are more than a century old. There is rose walk to the river and a garden featuring a parterre and espaliered pears and crab apples. The coach house, stables and oast house will be open to visitors. Valleyfield’s main house was licensed as an inn in 1822.

Rosendale, 1980 Lyell Highway, Hayes. Two kilometres further along the highway on the right hand side David and Annie Johnston have beautifully restored a derelict stone cottage and garden with a distinct air of Provence. The cottage garden combines a wonderful collection of roses (many David Austen) flowers, box hedges and a large vegetable garden. It is home to an attractive selection of mostly grey, white and black chickens (Silkies and Brinkotters). NOTE: Visiting times for Rosendale are 11.30am  to 4.30pm.

Meadowbank, 652 Meadowbank Rd, Glenora. On the way to Westerway and Mt Field
National Park, Meadowbank Rd is a gravel road on the right hand side, 2km past Glenora District High  School. Meadowbank is situated approximately 7km from the main road at the end of Meadowbank Rd. The Victorian sandstone house (1873) is set in a beautiful garden adjoining the vineyard with stunning views over the Derwent River. A few of the original trees remain, some of which are a mulberry, a huge pear and a snakebark elm, as well as a century old wisteria that frames the side verandah. The current garden, mainly planted from 1980, is reaching maturity and follows the plan of the original garden. The garden features low sandstone walls creating terraced lawns and garden beds, which follow the contours of the land. Many roses, rhododendrons, camellias, and other perennial plants and shrubs mingle happily together in this large country garden.

Bridge House, 7 Bridge St, Ouse. Bridge House lies below St John’s Church and is reached by the street to right just past the Lachlan Hotel. The garden occupies land that slopes gently down to the riverbank where there is a small weir of falling water. Bridge House, now a meticulously restored Georgian building was the original Bridge Hotel – famous as a haven for trout anglers and is still home to the wily trout and occasional platypus.

Leintwardine, 7326 Lyell Highway, Ouse. Leintwardine is approximately 3km from Ouse towards Derwent Bridge. The garden surrounds a charming stone house with magnificent sweeping views overlooking the Ouse Valley. The garden features well established trees, flowering cherries, roses and a paved garden with a particularly fine wrought iron gate set into a sandstone wall that leads through to the pool and arboretum.

Drama at speedway opener

LAUNCESTON speedway driver Jamie Bricknell was robbed of almost certain victory after a tangle with lapped traffic in the final of the sprintcar stampede at Hobart International Speedway at Sorell Creek on Saturday night. The 30-lap final was the main event on the opening meeting of the 2012-13 Tasmanian speedway season for the local raceway, with Bricknell keen to make amends for a disappointing third at Latrobe last week after leading for most of the coastal final as well. Bricknell qualified on pole position for Saturday night’s Southern encounter with two strong performances in the heats, with fellow Launceston driver Callum Zizek joining him on the front row.

As expected Bricknell blasted away to an instant lead at the start with Zizek giving chase, followed by Kurt Luttrell, who started well from grid four, making it a Launceston trifecta at the front. Bricknell used lapped traffic superbly in the middle stages of the race to widen the gap to the less experienced Zizek, but the race was halted on lap 17 when Luttrell spun and was sent to the rear for the subsequent re-start. Meanwhile, former state champion “Tornado” Tim Hutchins, who started from grid seven, had been making steady progress and was fourth after a good battle with Devonport’s Curt Smith when Luttrell spun, elevating him to third at the re-start.

Bricknell led away again at the green light, but Hutchins was closing in on Zizek in the battle for second. With Bricknell seemingly assured of victory, a tangle with lapped traffic three laps from the finish saw him and Zizek both come unstuck, while Hutchins was able to squeeze by the three-car pile-up. Zizek retired to the in-field with minor front-end damage, while Bricknell was able to re-start. However, in one of the cruellest rules in speedway sprintcar racing, any driver who stops must go to the rear for the re-start, even if the stoppage wasn’t his fault, which in Bricknell’s case, it wasn’t. With Hutchins at the front for the re-start, all he had to do for the remaining three laps was hold off Curt Smith for victory. Smith finished second in his best drive for the past two seasons, with Kurt Luttrell making a strong recovery from his earlier misdemeanour to charge back through the field for a solid third.

Earlier in the night former state champion Kane Cruse drove a superb race to win the second round of the Formula 500 Statewide Series. Cruse qualified on pole position for the 15-lap final, but spun on the third lap, causing a race stoppage, for which he was sent to the rear for the subsequent re-start. In a dominant display, Cruse, of Launceston, gradually carved his way through the field to hit the lead with three laps remaining to take the chequered flag ahead of the much-improved Brad Freeman and Joe Rattray.

On the same program Mole Creek teenager Josh Stephens continued his strong start to the season by winning the third round of the Junior Sedan Championship Series after a good battle in the 15-lap final with local driver James Nolan. Stephens won the first round at Carrick earlier in the season, with Nolan taking victory in round two at Latrobe, ensuring then series remains tight. Nolan qualified on pole position for the final, but Stephens was able to find more speed when it mattered to claim the win, with final with Hobart’s Nathan Russell coming from well back in the field to finish third after experiencing handling issues in the heats.

Victory in the wingless sprintcar final went to local New Norfolk driver Chris Gallagher, making it two in a row after also winning at Latrobe last week, while reigning Tasmanian champion Luke Gunn was far too food in the final of the Tassie sixes, recording an easy victory. State champion Sean Devine achieved a similar dominant result in the bombers final, while coastal pair Nick Broomhall and Darryl Bakes showed their experience to score a big win in the sidecar final. The speedway karts provided plenty of action, particularly in the modified clubman (senior) heats, but in the final it was an easy win to reigning state champion Cameron Abel, of Hellyer Beach, while Devonport’s Waide McLean claimed a well deserved win in the junior final.
