SPEEDWAY action returns to the south of the state this weekend with opening meeting of the season at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway at Sorell Creek near New Norfolk. The main event on the Saturday night program will be the sprintcar stampede and if last weekend's opening race of the sprintcar season at Latrobe was any indication of things to come, then southern fans are in for a treat. The support program also promises plenty of excitement, with the third round of the junior sedan championship series, plus racing for Formula 500s, wingless sprintcars, Tassie sixes, bombers, speedway karts and sidecars.
The program will get under way at 4pm with heats in three classes for speedway karts, plus sidecars, with the main program starting at 6pm and including finals for karts and sidecars. Racing in the state’s newest division, wingless sprintcars, has been close, exciting and competitive in recent weeks at Latrobe and Carrick and another strong field is expected to line up at Hobart's international speedway for the southern season opener. Sprintcars are expected to take centre stage with their adrenaline-packed high octane spectacular style of racing.
