FIVE new social housing units opened today will help provide support to Tasmanians
on low income in the Derwent Valley, Human Services minister
Cassy O'Connor said. Ms O'Connor officially opened the new two-bedroom units located in New Norfolk and which
are being managed by the Salvation Army and will be home to older
Tasmanians.
"This is another example of the Tasmanian Government working together with the Commonwealth and the community sector to deliver new, affordable homes for Tasmanians on low-incomes," Ms O'Connor said.
"These new units not only offer secure and stable homes, but also a sense of community for residents."
Ms O'Connor said the Salvation Army had received $400,000 from the State and Federal governments to provide secure, affordable and appropriate housing for people on low to moderate incomes. "Community housing is the new way of delivering social housing across Australia, because community housing organisations can leverage funding not available to state housing authorities," she said. "The Salvation Army contributed over $400,000 of their own funds to complete these units."
