MORE than $4500 was raised at the CanHope Cancer Support Group's big morning tea at the New Norfok RSL Club last Thursday.

Held annually since 1998, the event is part of Australia's Biggest Morning Tea which raises funds for cancer research and support services.

This year saw 27,023 morning teas held around the country, with the local event raising $4660.45 for the Cancer Council.

Solar bowls club and a mobile boost

A RE-ELECTED Coalition government would provide a $10,000 solar package for the New Norfolk Bowls Club and install a mobile phone booster at Lachlan, Lyons Liberal MHR Eric Hutchinson said this week.

Mr Hutchinson said he had provided a number of community organisations with solar panels as part of his 2013 election commitment - including the New Norfolk District Football Club - and was enthusiastic about more groups having the opportunity this year.

“The Solar Communities program will provide funding for groups across Australia to install rooftop solar photo voltaic, solar hot water and battery storage systems for community -owned buildings,” Mr Hutchinson said. “A 10 kilowatt solar PV provides savings of around $3000 per annum,” he said.

A new base station Lachlan would bring a much-needed boost to mobile telephone coverage, providing benefits to emergency service operators, businesses and residents, Mr Hutchinson said. "The Coalition's $220 million plan to address mobile black spots will ensure regional communities have better access to wider and more reliable mobile phone coverage."

AFTER its slow start to the season, New Norfolk has done a complete turnaround, chalking up its third victory in a row on Saturday with a win over Dodges Ferry at Boyer Oval. Once the Eagle machine got going the Sharks didn’t stand a chance against. 

From the opening siren to the final one, the Eagles had this game in the bag. They weren’t stopping for anything. The Eagles finished the first quarter three goals ahead and the margin only widened from there.

By the end of the third quarter the Eagles were nine goals ahead. Dodges Ferry managed to kick five goals in the final term but New Norfolk pushed that little bit harder to finish with a six-goal margin.

For the Sharks Brad Jackson and Brent Dolliver finished with two goals each, while on the Eagles' ledger Ben Lovell, Nick Clayton and Clinton Curtain managed to score three goals each.

In the Reserves game New Norfolk came out with a 25 point win, while in the Under 18s Dodges Ferry started the day with a huge 63 point win.

The reigning premiers showed their strength as they defeated the Lions in a fairly heated contest. In the Reserves the Magpies prevailed with Ricky Martin kicking five goals, and in the Under 18s Claremont came out on top with a margin 86 points this time, leaving a despondent Lions Colts team to make its way back to Huonville.

The Two Blues once again proved they are the team to beat this season as they have now successfully defeated every other team. Lindisfarne took about five minutes to warm up on Saturday, but after that it had the game in the bag and defeated the third-placed Tigers by 84 points. In the Reserves Lindisfarne finished with a 91-point win over the Tigers, with an outstanding effort by Jack Bromfield who managed to kick nine of the 22 goals. In the Under 18s Lindisfarne came out on top by 66 points.

High school works proceeding

Demolition works at New Norfolk High
School have entered their second week.

AS the demolition of the original New Norfolk High School buildings enters its second week, a picture is starting to emerge of how the redeveloped area may look when completed.

With almost all of the "Bristol Block" now removed, a large central zone is being created. This will be landscaped to provide an assembly courtyard and outdoor learning and recreation spaces.

All of the 1950s-era prefabricated aluminium classrooms have now been demolished, leaving only the smaller section facing the front car park on Blair St.

the school will form part of the new courtyard assembly area.

The school says the majority of the works reported last week are scheduled to be completed during Term 2.

The Education Department is seeking to commission a suitable artwork to complement the new area.

Security cameras for New Norfolk

A NETWORK of security cameras will keep watch over New Norfolk's central business district and the town's biggest recreational area following the awarding of a federal grant to the Derwent Valley Council.

More than a decade after they were first proposed, five closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed in the High St area and a further three at Tynwald Park, funded by a $48,000 allocation from round two of the Federal Government's Safer Streets Program.

The allocation was announced earlier this week by the Federal Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan MHR, along with the Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson MHR. "The Safer Streets Program supports communities to help address crime and anti-social behaviour, and boost crime prevention initiatives to keep our communities safer," Mr Hutchinson said.

"Under this funding commitment, the Derwent Valley Council will receive $47,957 for the installation of five CCTV cameras on High St and three CCTV cameras in Tynwald Park in New Norfolk," he said.

"The best outcome for any community is to reduce the fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience. Knowing our parks and streets are safer also encourages the community to become more involved in those spaces knowing both they and their work are protected," Mr Hutchinson said.

Mr Keenan said funding for the Safer Streets program was drawn from the government's Proceeds of Crime Account – money taken from criminals and reinvested into prevention of further crime.

Both teams displayed strong performances in Round 8 and will be keen to grab another win tomorrow to stay in touch with the top five as the middle of the season approaches. New Norfolk had a decisive win over Sorell, winning its second game for the season, while Dodges Ferry hung on for a two-point win over Brighton.

The Eagles had a slow start to the season but if the last two games are anything to go by they have returned to the style of football they are well known for and should be able to pull off a good win over the Sharks this week.

Dodges Ferry has also been showing their ability to contest in the early rounds, playing a close game last weekend and coming close to knocking off the undefeated Lindisfarne two weeks before that.

Both teams have proved they have the potential to challenge the best and are capable of a win at home or away. These teams are sitting right next to each other on the ladder, so it’s an important win for both of them. It will be an interesting match to see who can prevail.

These teams are desperate for a win this weekend and it’s going to be interesting to see if Sorell can lift its game on the road or if Cygnet can make up for the devastating loss against Lindisfarne last week.

Molesworth cricketers celebrate their season

THE Molesworth Cricket Club closed the 2015/16 season with its annual dinner and trophy night at the Star and Garter Hotel recently. With about 50 members and guests in attendance the evening was enjoyed by all.

Dean King and Sam Triffitt cleaned up 10 trophies between them, which included the Danny Godfrey Memorial Trophy in their respective both grades.

Another highlight was the awarding of life membership award to club stalwart Nick Piuselli. Piuselli has been a loyal and tireless member of the club for the past 13 seasons and for the past two years has guided the club as president. Piuselli has also contributed on-field, playing many games including the 2014/15 2nd Grade premiership.

Life members in attendance were Dion Hay, Sean Hay, Tony Hall, John and Carol Hutton. The club would thanks all trophy donors and sponsors for their ongoing support which makes a huge difference to every season.

AFTER a slow start to the season, New Norfolk has finally come through with its second win in a row.  The Derwent Valley Eagles used their home ground advantage to leave a devastated Sorell side in its wake.

New Norfolk was leading the game from the first siren on Saturday and after that it appeared the Sorell Eagles did not stand a chance against New Norfolk. By the end of the first quarter New Norfolk was already up six goals.

At half time, the home town Eagles were up 58 points, and showed no signs of slowing down as the margin only widened as the game went on, leaving the final score 23.13 (151) to 7.14 (62).

New Norfolk managed to kick 10 goals in the last half, showing the Eagles have clearly been hiding their best skills so far this season. It was an impressive game from Clinton Curtain who managed to kick a bag of six goals, along with Blair Wardlaw, Michael Thompson, and Nic Clayton who all kicked three goals. For Sorell, Tristan Pace and Sam Russell finishing with two majors each.

This win came just a day after the news on Friday for funding towards the upgrade of New Norfolk’s home ground, the Boyer Oval. This funding includes a new amenities pavilion, AFL size change rooms and undercover seating, as well as a new grandstand.

In the Reserves game Sorell came out on top, winning by seven points. Toby Pears and William Rice had great games with three goals each.

Local launch for learning project

THE Esplanade at New Norfolk was the venue last week for the launch of an online learning adventure based on Tasmania's  Derwent River.

Making science real and inspiring for students is the aim of the Bookend Trust adventure, which will traverse the river this August.

Dubbed Cirque2Sea, the expedition led by adventure educator and former Tasmanian of the year Andrew Hughes will follow the Derwent River from the Lake St Clair National Park to the Southern Ocean, with Hughes travelling by foot, raft and sea kayak.

Thousands of students will access the entire adventure from their classrooms through the Bookend Trust’s learning portal, expeditionclass.com

Mr Hughes said the expedition was a powerful way to get students motivated for science learning. For the official launch last week, he was joined by Grade 6 students from New Norfolk Primary School, along with the Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson MHR, Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans, Derwent Estuary Program director Christine Coughanowr and a representative of the Mercury Newspapers in Education program.

"Exciting" school demolition under way

THE original buildings of the New Norfolk High School will be gone within a fortnight. Demolition works started last Wednesday, consigning to history several rooms including the lunchroom and the original computer room where students in the 1980s and 90s had their introduction to information technology.

Other classrooms to be pulled down this week include the old typing and commerce rooms as well as the original main entrance, toilets, a staffroom, welfare office and the school nurse's rooms. These comprise the Bristol Block, a prefabricated aluminium building imported from England.

In a note to parents last week, acting principal Anna Viney said extra precautions had been taken and students would be safe at all times while the works were being carried out. The school canteen will operate from the home economics room for two weeks.

"This is an exciting time for the school as it will open up the grounds and enable a redevelopment of  a very useful courtyard area for students," Ms Viney said.

In addition to the demolition of the original 1954 buildings, significant upgrades are occurring in several parts of the school. This ranges from painting and the installation of new technologies in some areas, to the complete refurbishing of the Grade 7 block which was built in the late 1970s.

The works include:

• Thorough refurbishment of the Grade 7 block, including new windows, carpet, paint, doors, meeting and ICT facilities and a new entrance.
• Demolition of buildings that are no longer required, based on current and projected enrolments.
• Civil works and landscaping of the front and central zones of the school, including an assembly courtyard and outdoor learning and recreation spaces.
• The Memorial Garden will stay in its current location and will frame one side of the new outdoor assembly stage.
• Many new trees, both for shade and visual attractiveness.
• New surfaces will include a combination of grass, concrete and compacted gravel, sandstone blocks and smooth boulders.
• A ramp to the front office.

The majority of the works are scheduled to be completed during Term 2. Grade 7 students should be able to move in to their refurbished space in Term 3.

League supports $2 million Boyer Oval plan

THE Southern Football League has welcomed the apparent announcement of the development of a sporting precinct based around Boyer Oval at New Norfolk.

"A Shorten Labor Government will invest $2 million for the first stage of a Derwent Valley Sporting Precinct at the Boyer Oval at New Norfolk," a post on the SFL Facebook page said this morning. "The funding will be used to build a new amenities pavilion with AFL-size changerooms and undercover seating, as well as a new grandstand."

The SFL says the project has been supported by the Derwent Valley Council and local sporting groups including the New Norfolk District Football Club. "The announcement was made by Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Julie Collins MP along with Labor's candidate for Lyons Brian Mitchell and SFL president Madeleine Ogilvie, SFL league manager Ben Harrison and New Norfolk District Football Club president Ben Shaw."

According to the SFL the new grandstand will be able to seat between 350 and 500 people. "This new precinct will be home to local AFL, netball, cricket and tennis clubs and associations and will also include squash and volleyball courts," the league says.

A FAMILY fun day will be held today (Saturday) from 10am-2pm to celebrate the grand opening of the new Williams Mitre 10 store at 10 Charles St, New Norfolk. Although the business has already been trading for two months, today marks the official opening.

A function last night was attended by more than 100 guests including customers, suppliers and people involved in the construction of the large new building. Guest speaker Rene Hidding MHA congratulated the family on its investment in the town and described the new store as a quality development.

Mitre 10 general manager (operations and trade) Annette Welsh said the New Norfolk store was only the third of Mitre 10's new-style stores to open in Tasmania. She presented the Williams family with a keepsake commemorating the official opening.

Ray Williams said the business had started 28 years ago at the original High St location where it initially traded as Village Hardware before starting a long and successful association with the True Value Hardware brand which included several awards for being the best True Value store in Australia. There was another award for the most-improved store when the Mitre 10 branding was adopted.

The new hardware store is managed by Peter Williams while the associated Trade Centre run by his brother Adam Williams is another success story which has grown from a small start in Circle St premises, then to the original buildings on the new Charles St/Stephen St site, and across to Back River Rd while the new building went up.

Family fun day today

Today's grand opening celebrations run from 10am-2pm, featuring a live broadcast by 7HO-FM. There will be face-painting and a coffee van on site, along with a community fundraising sausage sizzle which will continue on Sunday. There is also a range of in-store specials on offer until the close of business on Sunday.

Last weekend saw New Norfolk get its second win for the season, while Sorell suffered another loss.

The New Norfolk Eagles reminded the competition of their true capabilities for the first time this year, proved they can still play quality football and hopefully for their supporters that will carry on this weekend as well.

The Sorell Eagles have had a dismal start to the season and are yet to win a game.  They really need to see come out of their shell and show their true ability this weekend.

This should be a great game to watch as it’s getting to that point in the season where wins are getting harder to predict and everybody is working twice as hard to get them. Every game now is important and each win is one step closer to making an appearance in the finals.

As these teams are sitting next to each other on the ladder they will both want a win tomorrow. The Magpies need the win to secure their position in the second spot, and Hobart need the win so they can challenge for Claremont’s spot.

Lachlan fire chief farewelled

IT was the end of an era recently at Lachlan Fire Brigade as chief officer David Gleeson stepped down after 18 years leading the brigade.

Since joining the newly-formed brigade in 1983, David has seen a transition in Lachlan from a farming community of livestock, hops and smallfruits to many smallholder farms and becoming a commuter suburb of Hobart.

Yet for this small brigade, David has overseen a major change with recognition of the responsibility in protecting the back of the Wellington Range.

“Any fire escaping out of the Lachlan on a day of severe or extreme fire danger will certainly have the potential to impact on Hobart,” David said. “The responsibility placed on the brigade has given rise to our motto ‘Protecting Hobart’s Backside Since 1983. This has been recognised by the Tasmania Fire Service with the allocation of a light tanker over the past summer,” he said.

Over the years David has attended many fires and incidents but events across the most recent fire season where lightning ignited two fires bought one of the biggest changes David has seen in his time - air support.

“With two fires taking off, air support was very quick as it had been two weeks previously with a fire at Illabrook. Once we would have had to battle these fires ourselves or with support from New Norfolk with a straight ground attack.”

Incoming brigade chief Victor Kaiser paid tribute to David. “He is someone who is not just dedicated to the Lachlan Fire Brigade but also to the Tasmania Fire Service. This is reflected in his 30 years service with the National Medal and the Tasmania Fire Service Volunteer Medal - and we commend David for his service," Victor said.

David Gleeson was formally farewelled at a dinner at Lachlan Valley Food and Wine where he was presented with two images of himself taken by the Mercury last year. However, he won’t be going far, remaining as a member of Lachlan Fire Brigade, undertaking community engagement and still putting the bins out each week.

STRONG winds at the TCA Ground last Saturday didn’t slow the Eagles as they secured a win against Hobart.  Both teams were constantly on the ball and fighting hard for the win, but New Norfolk proved to be that little bit stronger.

New Norfolk looked to have the win in the bag from the first quarter, leaving Hobart with a measly two points while the Eagles led with 41. As the game went on Hobart slowly started closing the margin, but it only really started to show in the fourth quarter that the Tigers caught up and narrowed the margin.

Eagles coach Matthew Smith was constantly encouraging his players to get back on top and stay in the lead as Hobart started to catch up. On the other side of the game, Tigers coach Steven Woods was telling his boys to play their own role and make a move in the second half to close the margin.

In the last 10 minutes of the game the Tigers piled on six goals and finished the game with only a four-point deficit. Daniel Huxley excelled as he kicked seven of his side's 14 goals.

For the Eagles, Clinton Curtain and Blair Wardlaw up forward showed some of the talent New Norfolk has been hiding this season.

In the Reserves, after a game of going back and forth with the lead Hobart took out the win over New Norfolk, while and in the Under 18 variation fixture Lindisfarne was winning throughout the first two quarters but then the Eagles came back and took out the win.

A vigorous cold front will cross Tasmania tomorrow as a low passes to the south, resulting in strong and gusty west to northwesterly winds.

DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for Thursday for the whole of Tasmania, but 110km/h gusts are possible about the west and north coasts. Trees may fall easily where the ground is soft due to recent heavy rainfall.

Boost for three local businesses

THREE local business proposals were among 56 projects named as successful applicants to the Tasmania Jobs and Investment Fund today.  The $24 million joint Australian-Tasmanian government fund is hoped to generate 774 new jobs and $92.6 million in investment.

The headline project is The Agrarian Kitchen's proposal to develop an eatery, store and function area at Willow Court in New Norfolk. The business will receive $130,000 towards the $390,000 project which is expected to create 13 jobs.

B.G. and J.M. Barwick Pty Ltd of Granton will receive $144,334 for its $433,000 development of a used tyre shredding business at Bridgewater. This will involved the construction of a concrete tyre-holding bay and purchase of necessary equipment. Two and a half jobs will be created.

Stefano Lubiana Wines, also based at Granton, has been allocated $283,793 towards an $851,380 project in the Huon Valley. Four jobs are the anticipated outcome of the Lubiana family's proposal to redevelop a defunct winery and purchase vineyard equipment at Cradoc.

Competition for the so-called "Cadbury money" was said to have been strong, with 140 applications reportedly received. For every dollar granted to the successful applicants, they must contribute at least $2 of their own money. $16 million of they money had originally been promised to Cadburys for a long-since abandoned expansion of the visitor centre at its Cadbury factory.

Premier Will Hodgman said the fund had sparked a new atmosphere of optimism in the state. “It is particularly encouraging that all applicants were prepared to put a significant amount of their own funding towards the proposed projects,” Mr Hodgman said.

THE Tigers had a big win against Cygnet last weekend and moved up to 3rd place on the ladder, while New Norfolk sits at 8th. The Tigers have played great games of football so far this season and coach Steve Woods says the team is really happy with its start to the year.

New Norfolk lost to Huonville last weekend, but won against Brighton the week before - for the team's first premiership points this season. The Eagles need to put their foot down in the midfield and win some contested ball to show just how good they can be and return to being the respected competitor they have been for so long in the SFL.

The Tigers also need to maintain their work ethic on field to lock in third spot on the ladder and maybe even advance to challenge the benchmark teams in Claremont and Lindisfarne. This game will be a good match to watch with both teams expected to give it their absolute everything.

Huonville v Brighton at Huonville, 2pm
Both teams are after big wins this weekend as they are both sitting next to each other on the ladder, but after Huonville’s convincing win over New Norfolk last weekend, the Lions are tipped to prevail again.

Sorell v Lindisfarne at Pembroke Park, 2pm
Sorell remains without a win this season and Lindisfarne remains undefeated, so both teams will be very keen for a win, Lindisfarne needing to maintain its position as the clear ladder leader and the Eagles needing a win to move themselves from their season of discontent so far.

Dodges Ferry v Claremont at Shark Park, 2pm
The reigning premiers are on their way to Shark Park to play off against Dodges Ferry. This will be a hotly contested match because both teams are after important wins to advance their position in the competition.

Red Caps celebrate season 2015-16

Life members at the New Norfolk Cricket Club trophy night.

IT was one of the biggest attendances in years when 80 people turned out to the New Norfolk Cricket Club's annual dinner and trophy night at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms recently.on Saturday night.

Among the many highlights of the evening were the naming of the first grade bowling average trophy after the late Ashley Morgan, who was a great player, clubman and life member of the club.

Meanwhile Josh Walsh was awarded the Charlie Eiszele best clubman award for all his hard work with the juniors and for his help with the committee during the season.

The coaches for next season were also announced on the night. Todd Rusher was reappointed as senior coach, while Jason Rigby was named assistant coach and Seb Wishart was appointed to the position of development coach. Rigby and Wishart both come to the Red Caps from the St Virgil's Cricket Club, but Rigby has spent most of his career at the New Town Cricket Club. All three coaches will be looking to build on the 2015/16 season in which the club did very well in fielding three senior teams, two junior teams and also four T20 Blast teams.

The New Norfolk Cricket Club is in a sound position with a bright and exciting future. Well done to club president Jamie Hill and the officebearers and committee members on their efforts. Season 2016/17 should bring much success both on and off the field.
