SFL football - Round 8 report

AFTER a slow start to the season, New Norfolk has finally come through with its second win in a row.  The Derwent Valley Eagles used their home ground advantage to leave a devastated Sorell side in its wake.

New Norfolk was leading the game from the first siren on Saturday and after that it appeared the Sorell Eagles did not stand a chance against New Norfolk. By the end of the first quarter New Norfolk was already up six goals.

At half time, the home town Eagles were up 58 points, and showed no signs of slowing down as the margin only widened as the game went on, leaving the final score 23.13 (151) to 7.14 (62).

New Norfolk managed to kick 10 goals in the last half, showing the Eagles have clearly been hiding their best skills so far this season. It was an impressive game from Clinton Curtain who managed to kick a bag of six goals, along with Blair Wardlaw, Michael Thompson, and Nic Clayton who all kicked three goals. For Sorell, Tristan Pace and Sam Russell finishing with two majors each.

This win came just a day after the news on Friday for funding towards the upgrade of New Norfolk’s home ground, the Boyer Oval. This funding includes a new amenities pavilion, AFL size change rooms and undercover seating, as well as a new grandstand.

In the Reserves game Sorell came out on top, winning by seven points. Toby Pears and William Rice had great games with three goals each.

THE Magpies had this game in the bag from the start, running out comfortable victors over the Tigers. Claremont also took out the Reserves and Under 18s games by huge margins.

Lindisfarne 20.16 (136) d Cygnet 9.3 (57)
THE Two Blues continued their winning streak for this season, defeating Cygnet by 79 points. In the Reserves Cygnet suffered a devastating 136-point loss to Lindisfarne, while in the Under 18s Southern Storm had an 18-point win.

Dodges Ferry 13.10 (88) d Brighton 13.8 (86)
THIS was the closest match of the season so far, with both teams showing how much they wanted to win. Dodges Ferry proved itself to be a tiny bit stronger, coming out on top by two points. Brighton took out both the Reserves and Under 18s games.
