Labor promises $5m for Mt Field

A $5 MILLION federal election promise for Mt Field National Park has been welcomed by Derwent Valley councillor Rachel Power, who described the commitment as the biggest investment for the park.

The Mercury this morning reported that the Australian Labor Party would today announce a $120 million Tasmanian tourism funding package, including $5 million for car park, visitor centre, road and facility improvements at Mt Field National Park, and help to manage visitor growth.

Posting on her councillor Facebook page, Mrs Power said this was the biggest investment for Mt Field National Park. "This is the third election promise for the Derwent Valley, this time from Labor," she wrote. Mrs Power is the operator of the cafe in the park's visitor centre.

"If we team this with their promise of funding to fix roads, we could start to see a very good outcome for the Valley coming from Labor. The campaigning has only just started though, let's see what Liberal come out with for the Valley - haven't heard anything so far?" she said, noting that this was her personal opinion.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten visited Mona at Berriedale later in the morning for a formal announcement of the tourism package, including $50 million for the Museum of Old and New Art. "The Tasmanian economy has many strings to its bow but tourism is certainly I think one of the great job generators for Tasmania. Tasmanian tourism is famous across the mainland and famous across the world," Mr Shorten said.

Labor's tourism spokesman Anthony Albanese said the announcement was a proud moment. "I believe this is the most significant tourism package for any state from any federal government or opposition in Australia's history," he said.

"$120 million with Mona as its centrepiece but also recognising that one of the things that Mona does for the 400,000 visitors who went through Mona in the last financial year - 70 per cent of whom were from interstate or internationally - is bring them here, this is the magnet, and then to spread the benefit throughout Tasmania particularly throughout the regions. So this package is comprehensive."

"Freycinet will receive $10 dollars to improve the facilities there. Mt Field National Park, $5 million. Both of these pristine natural environments are suffering from the number of visitors who are coming through and we need the infrastructure to keep up with it so that people can have a positive experience when they visit those destinations."

Weather Situation: Strong and gusty westerly winds will continue about Tasmania during the evening, with winds expected to ease tomorrow. Wind speeds are no longer expected to reach warning thresholds.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in Tasmania.

The immediate threat of severe weather has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 
* Supervise children closely. 
* Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters. 
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. 
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

Fond farewell to the Valley's 'Old MacDonald'

A FUNERAL will be held on Monday for the man known to a generation of children as the Derwent Valley's "Old MacDonald."

Keith Clark, originally from Ellendale, passed away at his home at Macquarie Plains on April 20.

Mr Clark and his late wife Deanna operated Old MacDonald's Farm and Hillcrest Holiday Cabins at Ellendale for 20 years from 1979-99, which led to Mr Clark becoming well known as "Old MacDonald" when the farm was opened up to day visitors and school camps.

He had a keen interest in community matters in the Central Highlands and Derwent Valley, and was a key driver of the establishment of the community garden at Willow Court and the Friends of Frescati.

Mr Clark is survived by his second wife, the Reverend Ellen Clark, and his children, step-children and grandchildren, and his two sisters and their families.

Family and friends are invited to attend Mr Clark's funeral service at 2.30pm on Monday, April 29, at St Andrew's Anglican Church, Ellendale. He will be buried in the church cemetery. Donations to mental health causes will be accepted at the service.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts and parts of the North West Coast, Midlands and East Coast forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The Warning to Sheep Graziers for the Central North forecast district has been cancelled.

The next warning will be issued by 11pm Friday.

Nationals promise $2m for Derwent Valley projects

FUNDING for four projects in the Derwent Valley was announced this morning by Tasmanian Senator Steve Martin and Lyons candidate Deanna Hutchinson.

Senator Martin said the four projects totalling $2.1m would would go ahead if the Nationals win government at next month's Federal election.

The funding announcement was made at Willow Court, which Senator Martin said would benefit from $500,000 for improvements to site access, infrastructure and parking.

“We are also investing $500,000 for Stage 2 of the New Norfolk [Esplanade] Revitalisation, which includes landscaping, lighting, a playground, further trails, pedestrian safety measures and the rehabilitation of the New Norfolk Pool surrounds,” Senator Martin said.

"In a boost for young locals, the Nationals in Government are committing a further $500,000 for the redevelopment of Derwent Valley PCYC, including gyms spaces, change rooms, meeting rooms and the kitchen.

“$600,000 will fund the redevelopment of the Tynwald Park sports facility. The project includes the development of a new pavilion including change rooms, toilets, a canteen and a community function space."

“Lyons Nationals candidate Deanna Hutchinson and I have been working hard listening to regional Tasmanian communities and delivering the funding they need to make key projects like these a reality. This is part of our agenda of getting a fair share for regional Tasmania and a concrete  example of the Nationals in Government putting locals first,” he said.



New Norfolk Cricket Club president Jamie Hill was with Senator Martin at today's announcement and said the funding was "huge" for the Derwent Valley. "It doesn't only benefit our cricket club but it benefits the junior soccer club and the junior football club as well," Mr Hill said.

"With female sports coming along like they have been recently, currently we don't have facilities to allow for growth in that area. So for girls and women wanting to play cricket and football and soccer, that's going to mean a huge amount to us," he said.

Senator Martin said this election commitment from the Nationals was about getting a fair share in strengthening communities in Tasmania. A spokesman for the senator said the projects would need to be "ticked off" by the incoming Federal Government.

Posting on Facebook, Derwent Valley mayor Ben Shaw said he was overseas and unable to attend the announcement, but it was appreciated by the community.

DAMAGING WINDS FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PARTS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Weather Situation: A front will cross Tasmania around midday on Saturday, causing westerly winds to increase and become strong and gusty. Winds are expected to ease slightly later on Saturday evening.
DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about central and southern parts of Tasmania from around midday Saturday through until early Saturday evening.
Winds are expected to ease a little late Saturday evening, then ease further during Sunday.

Locations which may be affected include Orford, New Norfolk, Bothwell, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
