"The crash has occurred where a white Mitsubishi truck, travelling in an easterly direction, has veered off the left hand side of the straight section of road," Senior Constable Keenan said. "After leaving the road the vehicle has continued a short distance along a steep embankment were it has rolled onto its side."
Police say the truck, believed to have been a horse transporter, was being driven by a 55-year-old man from the north of the state who died at the scene, just past the Oakdale Rd turnoff, despite receiving assistance from local residents and emergency service workers.
"The Lyell Hwy was closed for approximately five hours whilst Crash Investigation and Forensic Service personnel investigated the crash," Senior Constable Keenan said. "At the time of the crash the weather was fine and road was dry. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated. It is not believed speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash."
The Mercury reports that a local resident working on the side of the road near the crash site had been among the first to render assistance. The highway was closed between Oakdale Rd and Lawitta Rd after the crash, with traffic diverted via Lawitta Rd.
