Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Hobart and Surrounds
for HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS
For people in Hobart and Surrounds area.
Issued at 2:19 am Saturday, 6 April 2019.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:15 am, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Glenorchy, Brighton and Kettering. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Hobart, Kingston, Bellerive, Richmond, Cambridge and Sorell by 2:45 am and Dunalley, Norfolk Bay and Buckland by 3:15 am.
Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds are likely.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next warning is due to be issued by 3:20 am.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central North, Midlands and parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast, North West Coast and Central Plateau districts.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 216. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
