New Norfolk v Cygnet
THE in form New Norfolk continued their domination with another powerful display as they easily defeated an undermanned Cygnet by 92 points at Boyer Oval last weekend. The scores were 24.12 (156) to 9.10 (64). The first term saw the visitors surprise their more fancied rivals as they matched them around the ground and grabbed a surprising two point lead and look confident going into quarter time. The Eagles really upped the pressure in the second term and the Port could not match their intensity and strength up forward. The home team piled on nine goals and raced away to a 36-point lead but the Port still managed three goals and were not out of the contest at this stage.

The second half saw New Norfolk really tighten up their defence to hold the Port to only three goals and power away to another convincing victory at home to remain in second spot on the ladder. Best players for New Norfolk was Thompson who finished a fine game with six goals. He received good support from Triffitt, Wardlaw and Barwick whilst Heron chipped in with four valuable goals. Watson, Cane and Ford were Cygnet's best as they now drop out of the top six. 

Kingborough v Central Hawks
KINGBOROUGH started to get their season back on track when they easily defeated a disappointing Central Hawks by 108 points, 25.10 (160) to 8.4 (52) at home at Kingston. The first term was played at a really quick speed and the game really opened up. Whilst Kingborough led by seven points the Hawks really surprised them with their ball movement and kicked four valuable goals. The Tigers tightened up their defence and started to take control of the midfield and kicked six goals as they moved to a very handy 34 point lead at the main break and had the game in control.

The second half was all the home side's as they piled on 14 goals to two and raced away to a percentage boosting victory and got some of their key players back in top form. The Central Hawks struggled to play four consistent quarters. Better players for the struggling Hawks were Ladic, Daly, Murphy and Horne as they still remain without a win so far this season.

Dodges Ferry v Brighton
IN the game of the round nothing could separate these two very good sides at the final siren. Dodges Ferry controlled the game for most of the day but inaccurate kicking for goal cost them four points and they drew the game 8.31 (79) to 12.7 (79). The first term saw the teams evenly matched with neither side getting any early breaks. The Sharks battled hard in the windy conditions but Brighton started better and edged to a six point lead at quarter time. The second term saw the Sharks start to win the clearances and dominate around the ground. Two gaols and 12 behinds wasted easy scoring opportunities and Dodges trailed by a point at the main break.

The third term saw the inaccuracy continue but the home side was still able to grab a 12-point lead and looked likely to run away with the game. An accurate Brighton had other ideas and kicked five goals in the last term to snatch a thrilling draw against a disappointing and wasteful Dodges Ferry. Better players for the lucky Brighton were Salter with four goals, Williams, Howlett and Wall as they move a game clear of Dodges Ferry.

Sorell v Claremont
CLAREMONT bounced back to form and moved up to fourth on the ladder when they held off a determined Sorell and won by 10 points, kicking 9.10 (64) to 7.12 (54). The Magpies kicked with the breeze in the first term and were well held by the home side as they managed to lead by seven points at the first change but needed more goals with the breeze getting stronger. The second term saw Sorell force the ball forward but they missed easy shots at goal and just bombed the ball long. With Claremont having a loose man across half back they managed to hold onto a two-point lead in a game which was very evenly matched.

Claremont opened the scoring quickly in the third term and looked likely to skip away but Sorell really started to run the ball and they only trailed by 10 points and with the breeze at their backs they looked capable of taking the points. The last term was a beauty but when Sorell threatened, the Magpies had all the answers with some steadying goals. They went on to record a hard earned victory which was  especially satisfying away from home.

Lindisfarne v East Coast Bombers
LINDISFARNE kept its unbeaten run intact when it defeated a gallant East Coast by 38 points despite wasteful kicking for goal. Lindisfarne kicked 14.21 (105) to 11.1 (67) while the visitors kept their hopes alive with straight kicking for goal.

A big weekend in sports radio

FOLLOWING our first Derwent Valley Sports Wrap segment on Tyga 98.9FM last Saturday morning, Ben Shaw and I would like to say a big thank you to all our listeners and the people from various sporting clubs who supplied scores and info for the show. Thanks also to Mathew Smith for coming on as our first guest interview.

After the nerves had gone, we both settled in very well - so much so that we went over time by half an hour. During the lead-up to the show many predicted this was going to happen anyway! We would also like to thank station manager Rozzie Chapman who has been of great assistance in setting up the segment.

This weekend we will have more scores, games coming up, a little chit chat or a lot, an interview with a lovely lady from the women's netball and much more, so join him "Shawry" and me "Gleeso" this Saturday from 8am til whenever on Tyga 98.9FM.

Interview with Anthony Edwards

AN interview with Derwent Valley Olympian Anthony Edwards has been posted on the Tasmanian Institute of Sport's YouTube channel. The seven minute clip focuses on Edwards' preparation for the London Games this August, which will be his fifth Olympics.

The current world champion rower has won silver and bronze medals at previous Olympiads and with retirement beckoning he is hoping to complete the set with Olympic gold. The 39-year-old Molesworth man is in Europe for the 2012 rowing world cup, along with fellow Derwent Valley Olympic rowers Dana Faletic, Kate Hornsey and Kerry Hore.

Edwards was recently named Rowing Tasmania's oarsman of the year, jointly awarded to team-mate Sam Beltz. Kerry Hore was named Tasmanian oarswoman of the year.

Acting mayor's report to council

DEPUTY mayor Barry Lathey detailed the first part of his month of acting mayoral duties when he chaired the May meeting of the Derwent Valley Council. Mayor Martyn Evans is on a month's personal leave.

Councillor Lathey said he had marched at the dawn and 11am Anzac Day parades, led by New Norfolk RSL president Geoff Hack. A highlight had been when RSL vice-president Stephen Ball and the Australian Defence Force catafalque party visited Corumbene Nursing Home after the dawn service. The soldiers handed out cups of tea and Anzac biscuits to the residents, Celia Hooker gave a Bible reading, and residents were able to lay wreaths they had made. "It was a memorable day for all concerned and its success was due to a combined effort by the New Norfolk RSL and Corumbene staff," Cr Lathey said.

The Willow Court open day on May 6 was another highlight of the acting mayor's month, including the visit by Heritage Minister Brian Wightman to present the newly concluded memorandum of understanding for future development of the historic site. "The Willow Court and Barracks Working Group are to be commended for their efforts on the day," he said. Some $445 in donations was collected and about 12 tour groups were conducted around the site. "It was an excellent day and I look forward to more," he said. Cr Lathey said he understood adjacent businesses including Patchwork Cafe and Cheeky Little Place had benefited from the open day.

The acting mayor's events had also included a youth expo at the Derwent Valley Community House, various meetings, a media launch by Human Services Minister Cassy O'Connor for the "From Dirt to Plate" program at Frescati, and a lunch at Strathgordon with Tourism Minister Scott Bacon.

Boost for local history

FEDERAL funding has been provided for a "Walking history of New Norfolk" featuring informative "storyboards" and digital recordings. A grant of just over $11,000 will be matched by the Derwent Valley Council to fund an historical trail through the town.

The trail is intended to allow both visitors and locals to take their time to discover the history of New Norfolk and surrounding areas, through the installation of strategically placed information panels and access to "podcast" audio recordings.

Lyons Labor MHR Dick Adams said this and the $350,000 Willow Court conservation project would benefit the people of the Derwent Valley as well as visitors.

Derwent Valley Council regional development officer Jess Dallas thanked Anne Salt for her help with the grant application.

Federal funds for Willow Court

A NEW grant of nearly $350,000 from the Federal Government will help fund the upgrading of the electricity supply at Willow Court. Heritage Minister Tony Burke this week announced the provision of nearly $10 million to heritage projects around Australia - including $346,136.36 going to Willow Court. The Derwent Valley Council will provide matching funding.

The Willow Court project is called "Bringing Light to the Past" and will involve the installation of a new electricity supply and a start to conservation projects at Willow Court and nearby Bronte House. The 12-month project is aimed at stabilising the two buildings and making them safe for visitors.

Mr Burke said "Your Community Heritage" was a new and practical approach to heritage conservation that recognises our history is not just about big places on the World and National Heritage Lists. "The projects will foster pride in communities across Australia by helping them record, protect and showcase their important heritage," he said. “Our heritage is fundamental to our national identity and informs us about where we have come from and who we are. So many of the stories of Australia reside within our precious heritage sites,” he said.

Blow to business district

SIGNS advertising a closing down sale have appeared in the windows of New Norfolk's Retravision store, G.N. Electrical. There has been an electrical goods shop at that location for 50 years, since Canes opened in purpose-built premises in 1962. Canes became Homecrafts in the 1970s, and in 1987 the shop at 20 High St was taken over by G.N. Electrical, which had been trading in Hobart for several years.

Generations of Derwent Valley people have purchased their fridges, washing machines, televisions, microwave ovens and home entertainment systems from the store, where a good price was always offered by Helen Bremner and her staff. Mrs Bremner has worked in the store under its various owners for more than 30 years.

This unexpected closing down sale comes only days after it was said Tasmanian Retravision stores would operate as usual despite administrators being appointed to their buying group Retravision Southern Pty Ltd on Mondday. It is understood that G.N. Electrical's city store in Collins St will remain in business.

Weekend sports wrap

TOO much sport will be barely enough when Ben Shaw and Wade Gleeson take to the airwaves on community radio Tyga 98.9FM this Saturday. There will be sports news aplenty and probably a few laughs as "Shawry and Gleeso" each Saturday from 8-9am.

"We will be talking all things sport in the Derwent Valley - footy, cricket, basketball, netball, soccer - whatever we can come up with," Ben said. "We will have a huge focus on trying to let people know what is on in the Valley to either participate in or to go watch," he said.

There will be a special guest interview each week, starting with Eagles coach Mathew Smith this Saturday. Smith's mother Lee is also in the news this week, celebrating her 600th game with the New Norfolk Hockey Club.

The show will also advertise junior sports events, ground changes and game cancellations. Another aim will be to try to build up sports that would not normally get many participants or recognition. "We would like any input into the show you could give us, so if you're involved in any sport at all at any level, and you want to get something out there for the community to hear, please contact either of us and set up a way to get the info through and we will gladly relay it on the show," Ben said.

SFL PREVIEWS - ROUND 6

New Norfolk v Cygnet
THE in-form New Norfolk are back at home this weekend and will be looking to keep their improvement on track when they host Cygnet who really need to show some consistency on the road. The Eagles have started to get back into top form. They have regained some key players from injury and with their key forwards starting to hold their marks, they are capable of kicking a big score.

The Port were easily beaten by top side Lindisfarne in the last round a fortnight ago and they will really need to get some players bashing the ball to help out their defence. They also need to run the ball out with numbers and chip their way up the ground. If they are under pressure and bomb the ball long and high, New Norfolk’s big players will take control of possession and set up enough scoring opportunities to kick a winning score.

Cygnet may give some cheek early but the Eagles have far too much firepower up forward and should record a comfortable victory. It will be interesting to see how much Cygnet have improved  behind the top sides this season.

Kingborough v Central Hawks
KINGBOROUGH are back at home and looking to bounce back after the break last week and should gain some confidence as they host a struggling Central Hawks who are yet to win a game this season. The Tigers have surprisingly lost their past two games at home and the week off would have given them time to freshen up and get their game style back on track. This game could help them regain some lost form.

The Hawks have struggled all season and had a chance to record their first win two weeks ago against Sorell at home but faded badly towards the end of that game. They are lacking consistency and need to play accountable football and restrict the scoring power of the home side.

Kingborough have plenty of class in the midfield and their big marking forwards are capable of kicking a big score, especially as they are on a double rebound. The Tigers should be far too strong at home and will record a percentage boosting victory as they start to build up their form whilst the Hawks are struggling with class and experience in this league.

Dodges Ferry v Brighton
THE in-form Dodges Ferry are back at home but have not played for two weeks and this could be a real test for them as they host the improved Brighton who are also chasing a big scalp, having come close on several occasions so far this season. In their previous game they easily defeated top-rated Kingborough away from home and would have gained some confidence and self-belief for this game along with the home ground advantage. They have a very even team that plays a consistent brand of football and will be looking for a good start to put massive pressure on the visitors to ensure they do not get off to a good start especially playing away from home.

The Robins also are in great form, and also with a surprising win at Kingborough, are in top form. With key forwards taking big pressure marks they will pose a real threat if they can take control of the midfield and create the loose man and run the ball through the corridor. You would expect Dodges Ferry with the home ground advantage to take the points but they face a real challenge and if they are a bit rusty after a long spell then Brighton will take advantage and steal the points in a high class affair.

Sorell v Claremont
SORELL will fancy themselves to score an upset victory when they host Claremont at Pembroke Park in what should be an interesting clash as both sides appear to have improved. Sorell had a big win away from home over Central Hawks to record their first win for the season and with their strong midfield in good form they will fancy themselves of causing an upset victory. The Magpies were thrashed in their last game against top side New Norfolk and would have been disappointed with their performance especially in the wet conditions. They need a good start to gain some much needed confidence.

Sorell need to play more consistent football over the four quarters if they are to take the points and must create a lot of opportunities up forward as this has been where they have struggled in most games. Claremont has some experienced players who should bounce back this week and they need to get a good start to gain some early momentum and put some scoreboard pressure on their rivals. The Magpies may have a slight edge in class and height up forward and may take the points, but will have to be at their best and improve on their previous poor performance.

Lindisfarne v East Coast Bombers
The undefeated and in form Lindisfarne are back at home and face a real danger game when they host a very improved East Coast Bombers.  You would expect the Bombers to be pretty competitive for most of the game but Lindisfarne should have a little too much class and firepower up forward.

In near perfect conditions at Tynwald Park the Under 12s cemented their first win for the season, defeating Cygnet by 74 points. Strong tackling and great defensive work topped off with well-held marks saw the boys turn into men who had the taste for success. With the whole team putting in 110% effort it would be unfair to single out any individual players.   This weekend sees the team travelling by bus to Triabunna. Let's hope we can sing the team song all the way home.  Well done boys.

New Norfolk was outclassed by a more determined Clarence team in fine conditions. New Norfolk found the running game of Clarence hard to combat but managed to out-score them in the final quarter. Congratulations to Darren Crosswell on playing his 50th game.

In fine weather at Queenborough on Sunday, the U/15s carved up their opposition. The young Eagles had winners all over the ground for the whole four quarters. A big highlight on the day was the milestone achieved by Aaron Thorpe who played his 100th game.  Aaron has been a great contributor over the years as a junior footballer. From all involved, well done Azza you have done yourself and the NNJFC proud.

Names soon for Willow Court board

NOMINATIONS for membership of the new Willow Court Conservation Committee were expected in about a fortnight, last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting heard. Responding to a public question from Mr Len Butterworth, acting mayor Barry Lathey said the committee chairman, David Llewellyn, was very enthusiastic.

Council general manager Stephen Mackey confirmed that Mr Llewellyn had accepted the role and was working on terms of reference for the new committee, which has not yet been formed. Mr Llewellyn was also considering potential members for the committee and his nominations were expected within a fortnight.

Westerway grower honoured

Richard Clark and Dick Smith

WESTERWAY farmer Richard Clark has been named the Tasmanian Young Fruit Grower of the Year. The announcement was made at the Fruit Growers Tasmania annual awards dinner in Launceston last night.

The award citation says Richard Clark started the Westerway Raspberry Farm in 1998 as a teenager and through school and a university degree (bachelor of economics with honours) he has continued to grow the fresh raspberry business. Richard ships fruit to local and mainland markets and employs more than 160 staff during harvest. Richard has travelled extensively to study production around the world and is also an executive member of the Fruit Growers Tasmania Board.

Tasmanian raspberries and blackberries are key ingredients in a campaign by entrepreneur Dick Smith to counter the dominance of imports at the top end of the Australian jam market. Next year Mr Clark will supply Dick Smith Foods with 48 tonnes of raspberries and a smaller amount of blackberries.

New counselling service

THE Tasmanian division of Relationships Australia Tasmania now has a counsellor based at the Community Health Centre in New Norfolk. Counselling is available for people facing difficulties across a wide range of life issues such as relationships, parenting, depression, anxiety, workplace problems, divorce and separation.

FOUR New Norfolk players are in the the Southern Football League representative team that will play the NTFL side at Ulverstone tomorrow.

Naming the side yesterday, SFL president Kyron Johnson thanked everyone involved in bringing this together. "The players who are the ones who will put the show on for all to enjoy must also be recognised and thanked for the contribution and commitment they have shown at training and will show on Saturday. Without the support and commitment of all of the people involved, games such as this would not be possible," Mr Johnson said.

"From the SFL Executive and Board point of view, representative football at any level adds significant value to the competitions involved.  It provides competitions with a indicator as to where they currently sit in their development and in particular provides the players with an opportunity to play at a higher level outside of their club environment," he said. "It allows them to represent their competition at the highest level and to pit their skills against other competitions who are believed to be at the same level.  It also brings competitions together, administrators, players, coaches, support staff, volunteers and spectators.  All of these people have the opportunity to witness the best and up and coming players showcase their skills against a strong opposition containing the same.”

Footy clinic with Fevola

A CLINIC with famed footballer Brendan Fevola will be held at the Boyer Oval next month, thanks to the New Norfolk Junior Football Club, New Norfolk District Football Club and sponsor Norske Skog. All young players from Auskick ages (5-12) up to the Under 16s are invited to attend the clinic between 2-4pm on Friday, June 15. Youth on 59 charges

POLICE this morning arrested a 16-year-old New Norfolk boy on a raft of charges ranging from alleged motor vehicle stealing to home and business burglaries and evading police. The Mercury has the story here.

In wet and windy conditions, the Under 15s made it five wins in a row, defeating Sorell by 29 points. The team showed great determination throughout the four quarters and showed they can play both wet and dry footy. Josh Raspin worked hard all day as did Ryan Wakefield. Ryan has shown he has great footy ability since changing from basketball. Josh Challenger showed why he is one the best backmen in the Under 15s, doing his usual best. Mitch Booth stood tall all day and is coming into great form. Brayden Chaplin as always ran the ball well, while Tom Gillies was again a standout in the backline. The Under 15s have now beaten all teams and will again play Sandy Bay, this time at Queenborough Oval at 12.30. This game will be the 100th game Aaron Thorpe, so let's make it one to remember for Azza and get another win.

Claremont v New Norfolk
NEW Norfolk really showed they are approaching full strength and form last weekend, which spells trouble for opposition sides. In wet conditions they thrashed a very poor Claremont away from home by a massive 131 points, kicking 20.22 (142) to 1.5 (11). The first term was a very sloppy affair as the players needed time to adjust to the conditions but New Norfolk settled first and moved to handy 14 point lead. The second term saw the Eagles really dominate the play as their back line kept the home side scoreless while they piled on a further six goals and cruised to a match-winning lead of 58 points at the main break. The home side seemed shellshocked as they should have been more competitive, especially in the slippery conditions.

The second half again saw the powerful Eagles control the game as they played inspired football in the greasy conditions, slamming on 11 goals to a miserly two points and went away to record a percentage boosting victory as the Magpies were brought back to earth. Best players for the Eagles were plentiful with Clayton, Chaplin, Belcher and Carver, while Thompson and Bonnitcha each kicked three goals. For Claremont, Barwick, Direen and Kamaric were their best as they battled against the odds all day.

Central Hawks v Sorell
SORELL recorded their first win of the season, being far too strong for the Central Hawks at Bothwell. In wet and cold conditions they kicked 17.11 (113) to 8.7 (55). The first quarter saw the visitors really take control of the game and really looked the better side. Wasted shots at goal shaw them only 14 in front points at the first change.  Sorell kicked away early in the second term but the Hawks rallied late with three goals and really worked their way back into the contest but were still trailing by 15 points at half-time.

Sorell really up their intensity in the third term and kicked the only three goals for the quarter, grabbing a very handy lead. They then powered away in the last quarter with a further seven goals to record a confident boosting victory away from home. Best players for the disappointing Hawks were Brown, Daly and Cross as they still remain without a win this season.

Kingborough v Brighton
BRIGHTON caused one of the upsets of the year and really showed they are going to be a real threat when they defeated Kingborough away from home under lights by 21 points. The final scores were 9.11 (65) to 6.8 (44). The first term was played in wet and windy conditions but the visitors adapted a lot quicker than the home side, kicking three first-term goals and playing the better football to grab a valuable 14 -point lead. The second term saw the Tigers really attempt to work their way back into the game but the were soundly beaten up forward as the Robins' defence was well in control while they kicked a further three goals to have a commanding 24-point lead at the main change.

The second half became a real slog as neither side could get any real advantage but Brighton were very strong around the contests and recorded their best win for a few seasons. Best players for the gallant winners were Wessing, Bracken, Collins and Boucher whilst Whitford kicked three valuable goals.

Cygnet v Lindisfarne
LINDISFARNE kept their perfect start to the season and remain on top and undefeated after they easily defeated an improving Cygnet away from home by 58 points in wet conditions kicking 15.8 (98) to 6.4 (40).

East Coast v Huonville
EAST Coast Bombers recorded their second win of the season and really showed how much they have improved after thrashing a very disappointing Huonville on their home ground by 70 points, 21.6 (132) to 9.8 (62).

The Block is headed our way

Eurovision party planned

EUROVISION fans are in for a big night at New Norfolk later this month. Community radio station TYGA FM will host "Celebrate Eurovision" at the New Norfolk Golf Club from 7pm on Sunday, 27th of May 27.

The event is a fundraiser for TYGA FM and entry is free, but any donations large or small will be cheerfully and gratefully accepted. BYO party food and there will be a licensed bar.

Council goes west

WESTERWAY will be the venue for the Derwent Valley Council's monthly meeting this Thursday night. The meeting will be held at the Westerway Hall, starting with a community forum at 5.45pm. This is an opportunity for ratepayers and residents to discuss any issues of concern. The council meeting proper will start at 6.30pm.

Contentious issues on the agenda may include a tree removal at Willow Court and a proposal to erect multiple dwelling units on a block of land on Ring Rd at the former Royal Derwent Hospital site. The council will receive the annual report of the New Norfolk Historical Information Centre Committee, and it will consider a proposed strategy to counter the "reduce rates" campaign of the Property Council. Around midnight Saturday 3rd March 2012, the Franklin ward of the
disused Royal Derwent Complex was totally destroyed by fire. The
heritage listed building was required to be demolished. Estimated
damage at the time was $500,000.

Investigations undertaken by taskforce Icarus members of the Eastern
District Criminal Investigations Branch, today resulted in a male
youth charged with the arson.

Investigations are continuing as it is believed that there were others
involved in the arson.

Claremont v New Norfolk
Claremont are back at home but face a mammoth task when they host the in-form New Norfolk in what promises to a real test to see how much they have improved from last season. The Magpies were brought back to earth last weekend when they were thrashed away from home by the Lindisfarne. They would have learnt some valuable lessons and need to address these as their opposition this weekend will be more dangerous.

New Norfolk had a really big win at home against the Central Hawks but would have preferred a much harder workout for this dangerous clash away from home. New Norfolk’s forward line is starting to function and with their two forwards kicking 22 goals between them, the positions need to have their match-ups spot on. They must also stop any quality delivery from the midfield, otherwise they will be in for a very long day.

The Magpies need to slow down the game, attempt to win the stoppages, put some early scoreboard pressure on their rivals and not let them gain any momentum. Claremont may stay in the game for a long period but the class and experience of the Eagles and their ability to kick a lot of goals makes them very dangerous and they should record a  comfortable victory.

Central Hawks v Sorell
The Hawks are back at home and will be playing out of Bothwell this weekend as they get a real chance to win their first game of the season when they host a struggling Sorell who are also yet to win a game. The Hawks were thrashed by New Norfolk last weekend and they need to get off to a good start to gain some much needed confidence. Sorell are also in desperate need a win and were thrashed at home by Brighton. They really need to find some avenues to goal if they are to kick a winning score. They also need to play more consistent football and get some of their lesser lights to contribute more if they are to take the points.

Sorell may have an edge in pace and run but they need to counter the tall timber of the Hawks. If these players get a quality supply they will be able to kick a winning score.  In a game that could go either way, Sorell should finish a bit stronger than their rivals and take the points in what promises to be a very close game.

Kingborough v Brighton (night)
Kingborough is at home for the second week in a row and will be looking to rebound after last weekend's shock loss when they host a much improved Brighton under lights in a night game. The Tigers were beaten at their own game last week at home by a more desperate Dodges Ferry and will need a more sustained effort and more contribution from some of their key playmakers if they are to get back on the winning list. The Robins were impressive last weekend against Sorell but would have preferred a harder warm-up. They need to get off to a good start and get the early lead and put some scoreboard pressure on their rivals and put some doubt in the oppositions minds as they will be lacking confidence. Coach Henley will have given his players a hard week on the track and we expect them to be more ferocious around the stoppages this week and if they take control of this area then they should have the firepower up forward to kick a winning score. The Tigers on the rebound should have a bit too much class but they will have to be at their best against a very talented side.

Cygnet v Lindisfarne
Cygnet are back at home and will be full of confidence but face a huge task against the undefeated Lindisfarne in what promises to be a real test for the home side. Lindisfarne may have too much run and scoring power up forward but must not take their rivals lightly as the Port are always dangerous at home.

East Coast v Huonville
East Coast will be fresh from the bye and will fancy themselves recording their second win of the season when they host a struggling Huonville who will also be desperate for a win. The Bombers with a home ground advantage will probably run over a tiring Huonville but a win for the visitors would not surprise in a very even contest.

Gardening with Friends

HUMAN services minister Cassy O'Connor visited New Norfolk last week to re-announce a $400,000 project aimed at community development through a community garden project at Willow Court. Ms O’Connor said the "From dirt to plate to job" program would be funded through a Community Support Levy grant. “Funding from the Community Support Levy is drawn from gaming machine profits in hotels and clubs, and supporting these programs is one way we can help to provide healthy alternatives to gambling,” she said.

A grant of $427,650 for the Derwent Valley Community House would help get the community involved in producing food at the historic Frescati Garden in partnership with the Friends of Frescati. “This is a great way to encourage healthy eating, support skills development and get locals involved in growing food and maintaining the garden's landscape,” Ms O'Connor said. “The program will provide exciting opportunities for training and development in a wide range of courses including food safety, hospitality, horticulture and cooking and nutrition programs.”

Ms O’Connor commended members of the Derwent Valley Community House for their passion and commitment to supporting their communities. “Often it’s the Community and Neighbourhood Houses that are best placed to deliver these programs, because they know the region, they know the issues and they know what can work and I wish them all the best with these exciting projects.”

New Norfolk v Central Hawks
New Norfolk were back to their brilliant best at home when they thrashed a listless Cental Hawks by a massive 173 points, kicking 35.17 (227) to 8.6 (54). The Eagles opened the game full of running, piling on eight goals to three as they cruised to a handy 32 point lead and the signs looked ominous for the visiting side. The second term saw New Norfolk really apply the pressure as they took over the midfield and clearances, and gave their forwards plenty of quality supply as they kicked a lazy 11 goals and cruised to a match-winning lead of 83 points at the main break.

The second half was all the Eagles as they simply outclassed the undermanned Central Hawks, kicking another 17 goals to record a mammoth victory to pick up valuable percentage points. New Norfolk had many good players all over the ground with forward Thompson outstanding with 14 goals and he received good support from fellow forward Booth who bagged a lazy eight goals. Other good players were Joseph, Wardlaw and Eiszele. 

Sorell v Brighton
Brighton continued its good recent form when it travelled to Pembroke Park and easily defeated a disappointing Sorell by 107 points, 26.6 (162) to 8.7 (56). The visitors needed to get off to a good start away from home and came out of the sheds full of running. With their key forwards winning the marking duels, Brighton kicked six goals and moved to a very handy 23 point lead at the first change. The second term saw them continue to dominate the field possession and with loose players all over the ground they piled on another seven goals to race away to a match-winning lead of 60 points at the main break.

The second half saw the very accurate Brighton continue to be too big and strong for the undermanned Sorell as they cruised to a percentage boosting victory. Best players for the Robins were Martin who dominated up forward with eleven goals and he received good support from Triffett, Delaney and Wessing.

Lindisfarne v Claremont
Lindisfarne continued its unbeaten start to the season when it easily defeated Claremont at home by 84 points, 20.19 (139) to 9.2 (56). The Blues knew this was a real danger game and stamped their authority early in the first term but inaccurate kicking for goal reduced their lead to only 10 points at quarter time. Lindisfarne increased the pressure all over the ground and the Magpies were not up the challenge. Best players for a disappointing Claremont were Jacobson, Fewkes and Brown as they lost their first game of the season.

Huonville v Cygnet
Cygnet showed they have really improved this season when they easily defeated arch rival Huonville away from home, 16.15 (111) to 11.12 (78).

Kingborough v  Dodges Ferry
Dodges Ferry showed they may be the big improvers this season when they shocked the unbeaten Kingborough on their home ground to record a very impressive 17-point win, 11.14 (80) to 9.9 (63).

In a hard fought game against Brighton (a replay of last season's grand final), the New Norfolk Under 15s recorded one of their best wins ever. Ryan Wakefield gave an excellent display of four-quarter football as did Brett Hodge who took many telling marks and kicked three vital goals. Hayden Smith was supberb around the packs and his acrobatic style of play was something new! Brayden Chaplin, Joshy Whitford-Marriott and Nathan Wakefield ran hard all day and were a pleasure to watch. The backline led by Tom Gillies contiues to shine each week. Tom's work through the lines was just what is required of a defender. All 24 players should hold their heads high as all contributed to the win. Well done. The next game is against Sorell at Sorell starting at 10am -  let's make it five in a row!

The Under 16s have started the season with four straight wins. The boys are showing great spirit and seem to be enjoying their games being played on Boyer Oval on Saturday mornings before the reserves game. This weekend they will play Claremont before the reserves at Abbotsfield Park at 9.30am.

Sunday petrol at Maydena

PETROL will be available at the Forestry Tasmania tourism hub in Maydena each Sunday from 10am-1pm. Access to fuel has been a problem since the hub closed for winter but tonight's meeting of the Maydena Community Association heard that Forestry Tasmania was keen to help if possible.

Forestry Tasmania general manager (corporate relations and tourism) Ken Jeffreys offered to have the hub on Kallista Rd open for three hours a week, on a trial basis. After some discussion, the meeting settled on the Sunday morning slot.

Willow Court heritage sales hit

THE proposed sale of a further three buildings at Willow Court would further diminish the integrity of the historic precinct, Tasmanian Greens MHA Tim Morris said yesterday. Just one day before the formal handover of its new agreement with the State Government, the Derwent Valley Council on Saturday called for expressions of interest in the purchase and redevelopment of Wards D, E and G, adjacent to the Willow Court oval.

Mr Morris said that with former deputy premier David Llewellyn set to take charge of a new management committee that will oversee and drive the preservation and redevelopment of the historic Willow Court at New Norfolk, it was likely that noticeable progress would at last be made after a decade of delays and procrastination.

“I have had some very productive discussions with [Heritage] Minister Brian Wightman and the Derwent Valley Council in recent weeks, and I am convinced that there are good prospects for substantial progress to be made at last," Mr Morris said. “The recent work that has been undertaken by the volunteers of the Friends of Frescati shows what can be achieved by a small group of people with a clear vision and the backing of the council,” he said.

“I remain concerned that the council intends to try to sell off three more buildings which will potentially further diminish the heritage value of the site because they will not have adequate control over the future use of that area.”

Mr Morris also called on the council to consider integrating the maintenance of the site grounds and streets into its regular works program. He said the council had refused this idea, based on a decision made several years ago that it would not use any resources from its own budget to care for the site. “I strongly urge the council to revisit this decision as the site is a valuable asset for the municipality and that value will be maximised if the site is properly maintained.”

“Willow Court is an important heritage site for all of Tasmania and I will do everything I reasonably can to assist in its protection,” Mr Morris said.

The decision to attempt to sell the buildings adjoining the oval was made before the destruction of Ward F by fire. Expressions of interest have been sought and rejected on several occasions in the past.

Llewellyn up for the challenge

RESTORING and sensitively developing Willow Court was a daunting task, new historic site chairman David Llewellyn said today. Speaking at the formal handover of an agreement between the Derwent Valley Council and the State Government, Mr Llewellyn said he was aware of the task ahead of him.

"This is such an important site," Mr Llewellyn said. "Its history goes way back. It is an important history that hasn't been told [and] the buildings haven't had the advantage of restoration."

Mr Llewellyn said he had volunteered for the role of chairman of the Willow Court Conservation Special Committee and he was now seeking expert committee members. "I already have a few names in mind," he said.

Restoring Willow Court is expected to cost $10 million over some years, but Mr Llewellyn said every project needed to start somewhere.  "We know what the priorities are," he said.

There is about $500,000 left in the council's Willow Court account and this will be transferred to the new committee. Proceeds of the sale of the nearby recreation ground will be added to the kitty if it clears various planning hurdles.

Heritage minister Brian Wightman thanked Mr Llewellyn for taking on the chairmanship of the new committee and said he would need the support of everyone from the community and council level through to the state and federal governments.

Mr Wightman said Willow Court was indeed a significant site, older than Port Arthur. "We need to work together to look after this place into the future," he said. Mr Wightman said the most interesting thing was that while the hospital closed in 2000 its earliest section dated to 1827 and was built on best-practice models of the time.

Mr Wightman said Willow Court had a significant story to tell and he was pleased to have reached this point after a series of robust discussions.

The Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, Brian Wightman, today welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Derwent Valley Council to help secure the future of Willow Court.

The Tasmania Government is committed to helping the Council redevelop the New Norfolk heritage site as a community asset and visitor attraction. The most historic parts of the site - including the historic barracks precinct - are owned by the Council. The rest of the site, and the former Royal Derwent site, are privately owned.

“Willow Court is an important site that means a great deal to the local community. It’s important to provide some confidence and certainty about its future,” Mr Wightman said. “This MOU will help the Derwent Valley Council realise its plans for the site, and again make this place a source of pride and opportunity for the local community,” he said.

The MOU formally establishes a seven-member Special Committee to develop a program of works, and oversee the development plans. The committee will include an independent chairperson, a community representative, and a representative from Heritage Tasmania.

The council will use $750,000 of existing State Government funding to kick-start the works program, and support conservation work and essential maintenance.

“The Government has made a big commitment, especially in such tight financial times,” Mr Wightman said. “With the expertise provided by the Special Committee, I’m confident that money will now get things moving on the council-owned parts of the site.

“Willow Court is a large site, with many opportunities. By working together, we can realise its potential. The MoU signing is a significant milestone. It should give fresh confidence to anyone interested in Willow Court, that its conservation and maintenance is on track,” he said.

MORE than 500 people are said to have passed through the gates at today's open day at the Willow Court historic site in New Norfolk. Visitors were queueing an hour before the scheduled opening time of 11am.

Volunteers from the Willow Court and Barracks Working Group had several buildings open for inspection, including C Ward, A Ward and the iconic Willow Court convict hospital or invalid barracks. Representatives of other groups provided displays and information that added to the visitor experience.

A community barbecue was provided by the Friends of Frescati in the grounds of the cottage built by Colonial Secretary John Burnett in 1834. The barbecue proved popular and provided an opportunity for the recruiting of additional volunteers to the community garden project under way at Frescati and on the riverflats below. The recently uncovered fishpond attracted much interest.

Speaking later in the day, mayor Martyn Evans said he looked forward to monthly open days at Willow Court.

New Norfolk v Central Hawks
New Norfolk is back at home and would be confident of recording another victory when they host a struggling Central Hawks. The Eagles after a loss first up have really improved in recent weeks with a strong win last weekend away from home against Brighton. They would be looking for a very solid victory and should start to run some players into full fitness and ready for some hard games in coming weeks. The Eagles are starting to get their best players back in the side and this will make them very dangerous for the opposition.

The Hawks are yet to win a game and were easily defeated at home by Lindisfarne last weekend but have slowly improved in recent weeks. They will need to get off to a good start and put some early scoreboard pressure to gain some much needed confidence. New Norfolk should have far too much class and firepower and should record a comfortable victory at home, maintaining the pressure for a top two spot on the ladder.

Sorell v Brighton
Sorell are back at home and still searching for their first win of the season but will find their task very difficult when they host Brighton, also be desperate for a win. The Eagles after a good performance first up were soundly beaten last weekend by Dodges Ferry and will need to improve and find more avenues to goal if they are to cause an upset. The Robins were easily beaten at home last weekend by top side New Norfolk and have shown genuine improvement in recent weeks and they will be hungry for a good win.

Sorell have been struggling in the rucking division and need to win the clearances and stoppages and move the ball quickly into their forward line to create scoring opportunities. Brighton have a strong forward line and if they can create the loose man and run the ball through the corridor then they should be able to kick a winning score with their big marking forwards. You would expect Sorell to be more competitive at home but the Robins should have too much firepower up forward and be too strong in the end, recording a solid win away from home.

Lindisfarne v Claremont
Lindisfarne gets the all important home ground advantage when they host the improving Claremont. In what should be a close game between the two surprise undefeated teams, Lindisfarne may have a bit too much class and run for the opposition and with a strong vocal home crowd they should take the points in a very close encounter.

Huonville v Cygnet
Huonville are back at home and looking to bounce back when they host their arch rival Cygnet in what promises to be a very close game. Both sides look evenly matched and the centre clearances will decide the game. Whichever side can deliver the ball up forward without any midfield pressure should be able to create enough scoring opportunities. In a game that could go either way, perhaps Cygnet may have a little bit more scoring ability and they could sneak over the line but a win for the home side would not surprise.

Kingborough v  Dodges Ferry
Kingborough are fresh from the bye and will be looking to keep their unbeaten record intact when they host an improving Dodges Ferry at home. You would expect the Sharks to keep pace for most of the day but the class and experience of the Tigers should see them too strong in the end and record another strong win against quality opposition.

Rebecca Knight played well in her first game for the club with strong marking and finishing off her day with a lovely goal.

With some great teamwork along with some superb individual efforts the Under 15s had another great win. Jacob Picken marked and kicked well for the four quarters bagging the perfect 10 in what was a pleasure to watch. Brett Hodge again carved up the opposition with another best on ground performance. The team welcomes Zak Booth back into the side for the first time in a few seasons. Zak had a good game and will be a better for the run. This Sunday at Tynwald Park at 2.30pm the Under 15s will have their toughest test to date when they take on regaining premiers Brighton. This will be a great game with the team needing to be at their best to win.

Brighton v New Norfolk
New Norfolk proved they are still a big force this year with an easy 72 point win away from home over an improving Brighton, 17.10 (122) to 7.10 (52). The first term was a hard and fast encounter with neither side getting any ascendancy and even though the Eagles lead by eight points, the home side kicked poorly and could have been in front. The second term saw the powerful Eagles really up the pressure, kicking four goals to one as Brighton could not get the ball forward while the Eagles cruised to a very handy 30 point lead at the main break.

The second half saw the game really slow down and whilst the Robins kept pace in the third term then fell away badly in the last as New Norfolk kicked a further eight goals to record a really good win especially away from home. Best players for the impressive Eagles were Carver, Hall, Joseph and Clayton with Jelkic kicking three goals. Better players for Brighton were hard to find with Delaney, Willing and Wall their standouts in their second loss for the season.

Central Hawks v Lindisfarne
Lindisfarne move to the top of the ladder and remain undefeated after they downed an improved Central Hawks in wet and windy conditions, eventually winning by 70 points, 17.14 (116) to 7.4 (46). Whilst the Blues started slightly better they wasted scoring opportunities in front of goal and only led by 11 points at the first break. The second term saw Lindisfarne really start to run the ball out of defence as they kicked six goals to one and they cruised to a match winning lead of 45 points at half time as the Hawks were struggling to win the ball around the stoppages.

Lindisfarne continued to dominate the game in the third term against an undermanned opposition but they stopped in the last term, which would have disappointed coach Goodwin in an otherwise good performance whilst the Hawks are starting to show signs of improvement. Brown was clearly the best for the Hawks and he received support from Nibbs, Ladic and Daly as they remain without a win

Claremont v Huonville
Claremont remain undefeated in a great start to the season having come from behind in a very gutsy win over an inaccurate Huonville to scrape in by four points, 9.9 (63) to 7.17 (59).

Cygnet v  East Coast Bombers
Cygnet recorded their first win of the season at home with a very impressive 35 point win over an improved East Coast Bombers, 10.15 (75) to 5.10 (40).

Dodges Ferry v Sorell
Dodges Ferry recorded their first win of the season at home when they easily accounted for Sorell by 75 points in windy conditions, kicking 16.16 (112) to 7.17 (59). 

Just d'facts

LOCAL youth have added a weekly radio broadcast to their existing online and newspaper communications. Presently celebrating its 10th anniversary year, the Derwent Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT) last week began its own program on the local community radio station, TYGA FM 98.9.

Called D'Facts with D'FAT, the program will be heard each Friday from 4-5pm, presented by a pair of D'FAT members on a roster basis. It will promote D'FAT activities and projects.
