The Frescati barbecue |
Volunteers from the Willow Court and Barracks Working Group had several buildings open for inspection, including C Ward, A Ward and the iconic Willow Court convict hospital or invalid barracks. Representatives of other groups provided displays and information that added to the visitor experience.
A community barbecue was provided by the Friends of Frescati in the grounds of the cottage built by Colonial Secretary John Burnett in 1834. The barbecue proved popular and provided an opportunity for the recruiting of additional volunteers to the community garden project under way at Frescati and on the riverflats below. The recently uncovered fishpond attracted much interest.
Speaking later in the day, mayor Martyn Evans said he looked forward to monthly open days at Willow Court.
A fantastic day, congratulations to all the volunteers who made this possible and also council staff who asisted with the cleanup also the councillors and management who supported it. be good to see many more of the same.
