Severe weather warning

Severe Weather Warning
Damaging winds for people in the Western, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 5.13am on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.

Severe weather warning for southern Tasmania, south of a line from Strahan to Swansea.

Weather Situation
A deep area of low pressure to the south, combined with the passage of a cold front later in the morning will to produce a vigorous west to northwesterly airstream over Tasmania which should gradually ease this afternoon.

Damaging winds around 50km/h with peak gusts of around 100km/h are forecast this morning for the South East and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts and for southern parts of the Western, Midlands and East Coast forecast districts.

Wind gusts of 124km/h have been reported at Maatsuyker Island, 117km/h at Scotts Peak and 111km/h on Mt Read and Mt Wellington in the past few hours.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES on 13 25 00.

The next warning will be issued by 11am Tuesday.
