THE Education Department has announced it will build two new kindergarten classrooms at Fairview Primary School in New Norfolk.

The $800,000 facility will be built on the grounds of the primary school in North Crescent and will replace the existing Fairview Kindergarten further along the street.

Plans for the new building have been designed by architect Michael Cooper and have been lodged with the Derwent Valley Council for planning approval.

The new classrooms are expected to be ready in time for the 2015 school year, at which time the existing kindergarten will be sold. Originally called the New Norfolk Pre-School, the Fairview Kindergarten was built by voluntary labour from the Australian Newsprint Mills workforce in 1943, opening in January 1944.
