Sign of progress

The new supermarket will be at the
Charles St end of the oval.
A SIGN went up on the edge of the Royal Derwent/Willow Court Oval this week, indicating that work is to start soon on the construction of New Norfolk's new Woolworths Supermarket.

The Tasmanian business Macquarie Builders has been selected to manage the design and construction of the new standalone Woolworths store and car park. Its website says this $8.9 million contract includes heritage considerations, infrastructure upgrades and management of the project until final fitout and store opening.

This will be third site for the supermarket chain in New Norfolk since the original Purity Supermarket opened in High St in the 1970s. The current supermarket was purpose-built in 1983 and has had an extension and several refits since then. Woolworths also has a petrol station and bottleshop in New Norfolk.

The sign features an artist's impression of how the new supermarket will look.
