FIRST GRADE
After losing by just two runs last week, New Norfolk I again missed out on its first victory of the season after close one against St Aidan's at Tynwald Park. Needing five to win off the last ball of the match, the Red Caps couldn't quite get there, but it was a gallant effort by the team which has had its four matches against the top teams in the competition thus far. Batting first, St Aidan's made 8/262 off its 50 overs. Jason Rigby took 2-44 off 10 overs and Nathan Eiszele 2-62 (10). In reply the Red Caps gave it their all, finishing 9/258 off 50 overs. The New Norfolk batsmen showed plenty of fight. Stewart Rice batting at number nine played very well and finding form making a well put together 66. Nathan Eiszele did just as well making 65 while up-and-comer Cody Neads at number seven hit up an excellent 51. Another frustrating result for the boys, but I'm sure that first win is just around the corner.

SECOND GRADE
Molesworth I went down to the Knights by three wickets at Boyer Oval. Batting first, Molesworth made the defendable total of 10/179 off 45.4 overs. Khan Stokes made 45 batting at number seven hitting five fours. Opener Josh Ransley did well making 43, five fours and one six. Captain Nic Piuselli 29 four fours and Jayden Wilton made 17 three fours. The main wicket takers were Josh Ransley 2-27 (7) and Brayden Hodge 2-28 (7). Special mention to Jye Lester who didn't take a wicket, but finished with 0/6 off six overs including four maidens.

Gretna I lost its second match in a row, going down to Montagu Bay by four wickets. Having first hit, Gretna made 10/149 off 40.5 overs. Aaron Maddox has shown good form with the willow this season and made a handy 39 at number six, hitting six fours along the way. Jon Smith again got amongst the runs with 25 (three fours). Glenn Blackwell was next best with 11 (one four). In reply the home side got the runs, finishing 6/150 off 31 overs. Opening bowler Corey Ransley in his 150th match for Gretna I gave a good display of bowling, finishing with the good figures of 2-26 off 10 overs. Well done on this milestone Corey. Aaron Maddox took 2-53 (6) and spinner Craig Cunningham 1-42 (10).

FOURTH GRADE
New Norfolk II won its third match in succession with a three-wicket win over Gretna II at Gretna. The home team won the toss and chose to bat, making 9/193 off its 50 overs. Evergreen Brian Smith wound back the clock with a well put together 77no, hitting four fours and three sixes. Another veteran, Mathew Burns, made 35 with five fours. Jake Campbell made a valuable 14 with one four,
Mitchell Rice took 2-19 off five overs, Josh Walsh 2-39 (10) and the hat-trick kid from the Twenty20, Cody Morgan-Coleman, was again amongst the wickets taking 2-42 (10). In reply the Red Caps snuck home with just nine balls remaining, finishing 7/194 off 48.3 overs. Captain Chris Ashcroft continued with his good form, making 46 which included four fours. Nathan Heron made a very handy 29 at the end, hitting three fours while keeper Leigh Berry made 18 two fours and Cody Morgan-Coleman finished the job remaining 17no. The wicket-takers for Gretna were Mathew Burns who in strange circumstances took 3-22 off 10.2 overs. Burns and Sam Booth were unable to finish their overs and in turn confused their captain and the umpire completely. Aaron Browning took 2-22 (10) and Tom Allcock 1-10 off 1.3 overs.

Chasing 92 to win at St Virgil's, Bothwell I got over the line against Derwent with the loss off seven wickets. Brad Eyles top-scored with 25no, Simon Eyles 16 and Craig Pursell 14. All the Bothwell bowlers played their part. Matthew Eyles did very well taking 4-20 off his 10 overs. Mathew Glover took 2-18 off 8, Brock Nichols 2-20 off 7.4 and Craig Pursell 2-30 (9).

In the match between Bushy Park and Bagdad that was to be played at Bagdad, Bushy Park had to forfeit due to longtime player Mitchell Crosswell getting married the same day. Congratulations to the newlyweds Mitch and Emma.

SIXTH GRADE
Yet to record a victory, Molesworth went down to Sandford at Sandford by six wickets. Batting first, the visitors got off to a good start with opener Jack Evans making a excellent 58 with seven fours and one six, Evans put on 66 with fellow opener Aaron Bradley 18 runs. Kam Mallinson in just his second match made 33 at first drop, hitting one four and three sixes. Down the order, Liam Triffitt hit three fours in his 15 runs. Molesworth was all out for 159 after 44.5 overs. In reply the home side finished 4/162 off 31.3 overs. Wicket-takers were Josh Nichols 2-30 (4) and captain Jason Mallinson 2-43 (10).

SEVENTH GRADE
Playing at Tynwald Park and with just nine players, New Norfolk lost its first match for the season. The Red Caps made 8 for 101 off 31.4 overs, with David Mitchlemore scoring 25 runs and Graeme Rowlands 14. Trent Smith and Brendan Skelly made 13 each. Wellington chased down the total off 38.1 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Spinner David Mitchelmore doubled up and took 2-28 off 9.1 overs and Jake Bearman took 2-33 (10). Paceman Graeme Rowlands tried his hardest and finished with tidy figures of 1-12 (10). Trent Smith 1-22 (8).

EIGHTH GRADE
Bothwell II registered its first win for the season with a big 116 run victory over St Aidan's at Bothwell. Winning the toss and batting first, the Bucks faced all their 50 overs, making the good total of 7/195. First drop Craig Davey top-scored with a well-made 77. Young Blake Eyles made a handy 26no and Mark Pearce 15. There were 45 sundries. In reply the visitors were bundled out for 79 off 23.1 overs thanks to all of Bothwell's bowlers. Mark Pearce 4-39 off 6 was the main wicket-taker. Rhys Franklin had good figures of 2-11 (6) as did Troy Branch 2-12 (5) while captain Peter Hansch took 2-17 (6). In all a very good first win for the Bucks.

SIXTEEN-year-old Cody Morgan-Coleman, pictured, took a hat-trick in New Norfolk III's T20 Superbash semi-final win over the MacKillop Beltas last Thursday night.

Morgan-Coleman finished with figures of 3 for 8 off three overs in the match played at Tynwald Park.

Fork fetches fine price

Fork or fiction?

A PIECE of cutlery described as an anti-stabbing fork from Willow Court has recently sold for more than $150 in an online auction. The item had a starting price of $49.99 and sold for $153.50 after attracting eight bids from three bidders.

The Hobart-based eBay seller described the hallmarked item as a "Tasmanian Government prison issue anti-stabbing fork for the convict asylum at New Norfolk."

The handle was stamped with the letters H.N.N. which the seller stated to be an abbreviation for "Hospital, New Norfolk".

The seller went on to say that the 20cm implement had been specially designed to reduce the risk of injury if used as a weapon and concluded that it was a "super rare item as all the cutlery was collected and destroyed" when the hospital closed.

A Launceston seller did not fare as well with a signed first-edition copy of Troubled Asylum last week. The book had a starting price of $275 but failed to attract any bids and was withdrawn from sale.

Award nominations close next week

THERE are two weeks remaining for nominations in the various categories of the Derwent Valley Council's annual Australia Day Awards.

Awards will be made in the following categories and a nomination form can be downloaded from the council website.

Glover's double double

Kieran Glover racing in Perth last month.

LOCAL driver Kieran Glover has done it again, winning the Formula Vee National Series at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit today. This is Glover's second national series win, and as with last year's effort, the honour came within weeks of winning the National Challenge in the same discipline.

Formula Vee is an open wheeler race car category, based on Volkswagen parts, established more than 50 years ago. The category is recognised as the official entry-level motorsport category in Australia and Glover, from Sorell Creek, competes in the 1600cc division.

Glover's national championship had already been locked when he finished in second place in the first race this morning.

"It has been a huge achievement for our team to take out not only the National Challenge but now the National Series over two consecutive years," Glover said on Facebook tonight night. "Massive thanks to Clark Rubber Hobart for their continued support, my family, my partner Anita, and everyone that's helped me along the way."

Free weekend at Bushy Park Pool

TO celebrate the start of the season at the Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool, free entry is being offered this weekend November 26 and 27.

Entry will be free on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm and a free sausage sizzle will be provided around 1pm on Saturday.

WITH glorious days for cricket over the weekend, Round 3 of the Southern Cricket Association saw plenty of action in all grades.

In First Grade, New Norfolk I had a real nail-bitter at East Street, going down to Wellington by just two runs. With one ball remaining, the Red Caps required three runs for their first victory of 2016/17, but it wasn't to be. Wellington made 10/231 and in reply New Norfolk finished 9/229 off its 50 overs. Seb Wishart batted extremely well making a fine 57 which included six fours. Joe McCulloch made 38 (four fours) while Stewart Rice at number 10 made a quickfire 30 hitting three fours and two sixes. With the ball, captain and opening bowler Jason Rigby bowled with plenty of fire taking the fine figures of 5-27 off his 10 overs. Josh Rowlands gave great support with 3-55 (10).

In the Second Grade match between Molesworth I and Gretna I at Gretna, Molesworth was an easy victor by six wickets. After taking 3-32 from seven overs to help bowl Gretna out for 162, Brayden Hodge then opened the batting with a well-made 64. Hodge's innings included six fours and three sixes. Another to do well was Brad Coppleman who took 2-18 off 5.2 overs then hit up a handy 40 runs with four fours and two sixes while Alex Ross took 2-31 (10) and made 24 with four fours. For Gretna John Smith made 35 (four fours, one six). Rhys Browning made 24 with three fours and Glenn Blackwell 21 (three fours). Daniel Browning took 2-29 off five overs.

In Fourth Grade, New Norfolk II had a comfortable seven-wicket win over Bothwell I at Tynwald Park. Bothwell had first hit, making 10/108 off 38.2 overs. In reply, New Norfolk lost just three wickets finishing 3/109 off 21.3 overs. Keeper Leigh Berry top-scored with 33 runs (five fours). Adrian Eiszele 25 (three fours) and Jamie Hill 18no (one four). With the ball for New Norfolk, Liam O'Brien bowled very well with figures off 3-23 off 8 overs. Jamie Hill 2-8 (1.2), Aaron Drew 2-21 (10). Josh Walsh 1-24 (10) and Aaron Triffitt 1-15 (5). No Bothwell stats were available.

Bushy Park recorded its first 50-over match victory on Saturday defeating St Virgil's by 66 runs at St Virgil's. Bushy batted first, making 10/190 off 46 overs. Shaun Fenton put in a good show with the willow with an even half century. Ben Triffett did well down the order with 23no while Brad Smith made 19. There was a staggering 47 extras. In reply the home side was dismissed for 124 off 42.4 overs. This was mainly due to the purple patch of bowling from Jeremy Lowe who took 4-13 off just 4.4 overs. Brad Smith also did well with 3-38 off 10 overs while Troy Smith took 1-28 off 10 overs. In all a good first up win for the Bushy Park lads.

In the match at Risdon Vale, Hobart 6/223 off 41.1 overs defeated Gretna II 9/220 off 50 overs. Jordan Hastie lead the way making a very good half century of 52 hitting one four and two sixes. Jake Campbell also did well making 27no (four fours) while Darren Lennox at number 11 also made 27no (three fours, one six). Adam Browning made 22 (four fours). With the ball, Jackson Ackerly was the main wicket taker with 2-53 (10).

In the Sixth Grade match, Molesworth II went down to Montagu Bay at Boyer Oval by 42 runs. The visitors made 10/157 off 46.2 overs, then in reply Molesworth was dismissed for 115 off 30.5 overs, including 46 extras. Jye Lester top scored for the home team with 18no. Jack Evans 17 and captain Tim Nichols 12. With the ball Jack Evans finished with 4-40 (9). Tim Nichols was tight with 2-17 of 7.2 overs and Liam Triffitt 2-24 (8).

In Seventh Grade, New Norfolk III continued its winning run, defeating Brighton at Pontville by five wickets. Brighton had first knock, making just 10/73 off 26 overs. In reply New Norfolk wasn't convincing, but got the job done, finishing 5/77 off 14.1 overs. Opener Shayne Upton top-scored with 28, hitting four fours and one six. Trent Smith made 20no (three fours and one six). In the bowling Jye Bearman took 3-16 from four overs, Trent Smith 2-9 (3), Jake Bearman 2-12 (6), Cody Morgan-Coleman 2-15 (6) and Dylan Browning 1-5 (2). New Norfolk remains undefeated after three rounds and this is a great effort since the side is made up of mostly players under 18 years of age.

In Eighth Grade, Sorell with 6/141 off 32.3 overs defeated Bothwell II with 10/138 off 34.5 overs.

Lyell Highway roadworks

ROADWORKS are being carried out at multiple locations on the Lyell Highway between Granton and Black Bobs.

There will be whole and partial road closures while the overtaking lanes at Murphys Flat are resealed this week. This is scheduled for November 23 and 24, weather permitting. This work will be done between 9.30am and 3.30pm, between Jarvis Creek and Parramore Creek.

Contractors will be carrying out a sprayed bituminous surfacing which will involve road closures for periods of up to 15 minutes. Traffic management controllers will alternate the traffic flow to reduce the impact of works on the travelling public.

Resurfacing works are also being undertaken on a 2km stretch of the Lyell Hwy leading to the Black Bobs Rivulet Bridge, where frequent road closures may occur until 5pm this Friday.

Reconstruction of the Lyell Hwy between Hollow Tree Rd and Hamilton is ongoing until February 23, 2017, with a reduced speed limit in force along with occasional road closures between 7am and 6pm daily.

A 2.5km of the highway leading to Ouse is also being constructed, with works being carried out until January 31, 2017. A reduced speed limit applies in the area, with frequent lane closures between 7am and 7pm.

Helicopters back for another look at power lines

POWER company TasNetworks is having another good look at power lines at New Norfolk. The government-owned business last used helicopters to inspect electricity transmission lines around the town in January 2015 and they have returned this week.

TasNetworks recently announced it would be carrying out aerial inspections of its infrastructure around the state until mid-February 2017. These inspections will assist TasNetworks in identifying any problems or defects that could affect reliability to the region.

"Local residents may see the helicopter moving relatively slowly and at low levels while it is inspecting the lines," a spokesman said. "Our aim is for this work to be carried out as quickly as possible to avoid disruption to those in the local community. All reasonable measures will be taken to minimise disturbances to residential areas and livestock."

Local areas being inspected include New Norfolk, Strathgordon, Gretna, Hamilton, Ouse, Tarraleah, Great Lakes, Waddamana, Bothwell, Bridgewater and Collinsvale.

Players to perform Peter Pan panto

PETER Pan has been selected for this year's Christmas Pantomime by the Derwent Valley Players. There will be four performances at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall, at 2 and 5pm on December 17 and 18.

Supported by the Derwent Valley Council, the pantomime should be full of fun for children and adults alike. Ticket prices will be $25 for a family, $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The Derwent Valley Players is a not-for-profit group dating to 1943. New members are always welcome, whether for on-stage work or behind the scenes support. Previous experience is not necessary but a level of commitment is required, especially for on-stage roles.

For anyone in participating, rehearsals are held at the Memorial Hall, Circle St (side entrance) every Monday evening. The Players are particularly seeking additional children for this year's performances. For more information visit the website or call Doug Smith on 0402 134 474.

Police seek help solving two burglaries

police would like to know.

POLICE are seeking information to help in the investigation of two recent crimes in the Derwent Valley. Shops at New Norfolk and Collinsvale were burgled in the early hours of Sunday, October 30.

The Collinsvale Milkbar was burgled just before 2am and Subway New Norfolk was forcibly entered shortly after. At both businesses the front doors were forced open and cash was stolen.

Police believe both burglaries were committed by the same group of people. Security camera images have been released today, allegedly showing a vehicle used during the committing of the crimes, as well as images from inside the businesses involved.

Police say anyone with information in relation to the burglaries or who can identify the pictured people and/or vehicle can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be given anonymously.

Charity match aids stricken cricketer

WELL over $5000 was raised for Bushy Park cricketer Nathan Grant in the charity match played at the Bushy Park Showground on the weekend. Players from the Bushy Park and Runnymede clubs made up two mixed teams for an enjoyable event.

Bushy Park captain Shaun Fenton helped to organise the event and said it was good to see many spectators coming along, with more than 60 people turning out throughout the day.

The club thanks all those who donated be prizes or money as well as everyone who helped to make the day happen. It was all greatly appreciated. The funds raised will assist Nathan as he recovers from brain surgery

Let's hope that Nathan makes a speedy recovery and is back to his normal self very soon. It really is great to see how the cricket community can come together to help out when it is really needed. Well done to both clubs.

Junior cricketers in focus

WHILE the weather on Sunday wasn't favourable for the second Test match at Bellerive Oval, the visiting parents and children from the Glenora Milo In2CRICKET and Gretna and New Norfolk T20 Blast programs didn't miss out.

The children didn't get to go out onto the ground and show off their skills as planned, but they did get a big thrill when Australian team members Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird and debutant Joe Mennie joined them to answer questions and give every child their autograph.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed the events and the efforts of Cricket Tasmania to provide activities for the children despite the weather, was a big well done to Cricket Tasmania for their work with the kids despite the weather was appreciated by all.

A day earlier, Lucy Gleeson from Magra officiated as one of the flag bearers who welcomed the Australian and South African players. She also had the privilege of leading the Aussies on to the ground before the national anthem ceremonies. Well done Lucy.

Congratulations also to Gretna Cricket Club Under 13 player Byron Conley who was recently named the Cricket Tasmania Youth League Player of the Round. During the round two match, Byron picked up two wickets for 11 runs off two overs in the good win over New Town at the Glenora School Oval. For his efforts, Byron won a gift voucher to spend at the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre in Derwent Park. Byron continued his good form the following week against Wellington, taking 4-12 off three overs and scoring five runs. Keep up the good work Byron.

The next T20 Blast session is this Friday at Tynwald Park, New Norfolk, starting at 4.30pm and the next Glenora in2CRICKET session is on Sunday at 9am.

Minor flooding has eased in the River Derwent catchment during Tuesday morning. River levels will continue to ease during Tuesday.

Since 9AM Monday, no significant rainfall has been recorded in the Derwent Catchment. No significant rainfall is forecast for the Derwent catchment for Tuesday.

Strong and dangerous flows may remain a hazard throughout the Derwent Catchment over the next few days.

River Derwent above River Ouse:

No further flooding is expected in the River Derwent above River Ouse.

River Ouse:

No further flooding is expected in the River Ouse.

The River Ouse at Ashton is currently at 1.42 metres and steady.

River Clyde:

No further flooding is expected in the River Clyde.

Local students take big ideas to Sydney

TWO girls from New Norfolk High School are among four Tasmanian students chosen to take part in an unforgettable experience at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) this week. They were selected from more than 180 applicants to attend the inaugural Big Ideas Forum in Sydney from November 14-18.

The ANSTO Big Ideas Forum is gathering budding 22 STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) students from across the country for a week of learning, alongside some of Australia’s best scientific minds. Students were asked to tell ANSTO in a 40-second video, what they hope to see science solve in the future, for a chance to discover if their idea is possible at a facility could be part of the solution.

Chloe Wilson and Kimberley Cantwell from New Norfolk High School wanted to know whether methane gas from cows could be eliminated, to ensure the thriving dairy industry can continue without contributing to climate change. Their teacher Rose Anderson has also been invited to Sydney to take part in professional development workshops and practical activities. Their video can be seen below.

“All of the students asked really perceptive questions about the challenges of the future, which has been great to see,” Big Ideas Forum co-ordinator Rod Dowler said. “ANSTO Big Ideas Forum is about empowering students to push boundaries, and not confine themselves to being ‘just students’ – their ability to contribute is vast and we want to give them every opportunity.

“This is the first year of the program, and it will be exciting to see how kids from across the country, with very different interests and backgrounds, can collaborate and enhance each other’s learning," Mr Dowler said.

“Chloe and Kimberley have drawn their ideas from the real world, and their own worlds – they’ve identified unique challenges, and put their minds to whether a solution could be found. These students are getting ready to choose senior subjects, and hopefully the ANSTO Big Ideas Forum will provide them with a great opportunity to see what a career in science or engineering could look like," he said.

“Curiosity is the key to succeeding in innovative research and these students have already proven they have that. It will be wonderful to see it grow and flourish over the week,” Mr Dowler said.

New Norfolk people wanted for rural survey

RESEARCHERS are inviting adults from rural areas across three Australian states to speak up about whether the design of their local area helps them to get moving. New Norfolk is one of nearly 50 towns invited to take part in the survey being conducted by the Menzies Institute for Population Health Research.

“We want to know how the design of our local areas encourages or prevents us from being active, and whether people in rural areas have access to a sufficient range of safe, well-maintained places to be active,” Menzies researcher Verity Cleland said. Dr Cleland leads the study, which also includes researchers from the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University in Victoria and the University of South Australia.

“Academic research has shown that the local environment is related to physical activity levels in cities, but this sort of research has rarely been done in a rural setting in Australia,” Dr Cleland said.

“Identifying features of our local environment that impact most on physical activity is very important because we can then help councils, government, planners and developers create spaces and places that support healthy lifestyles for rural people.”

“Creating environments that make it easy to be active without even having to think about it has enormous potential as a way to improve population health,” Dr Cleland said.

Since 9AM Monday, no significant rainfall has been recorded in the Derwent Catchment.
No significant rainfall is forecast for the Derwent catchment for the remainder of Monday.
Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard throughout the Derwent Catchment in areas that received heavy rainfall.
