Round 1
THE first round of the 50-over season got under way on Saturday under rare but long overdue blue skies. There were some mixed results of high scores and no-so-high scores.
In first grade New Norfolk I went down to St Anne's by five wickets at Cadburys No.1. The Red Caps had first hit, making the defendable total of 10/197 off 48.4 overs. Wicket keeper and opening batsman Adam McKeown started off well at his new club and made an excellent 75 runs, hitting nine well-struck fours. Also new to the club, Nathan Eiszele made 38 (six fours) and Seb Wishart made 18 (one four). In reply the home side reached the total with the loss of five wickets and off just 33.3 overs. Josh Rowlands took 2-57 (9) and Nathan Eiszele 1-24 (6) were the best of the bowlers.
Gretna I got off to a good start in second grade by defeating the more fancied Wellington by 17 runs at Gretna. Winning the toss and batting, Gretna made 8/225 off its 50 overs. This was largely due to opening batsman Bruce Emery who put together an excellent 84 which included four boundaries. Aaron Maddox remained 37 not out (three fours) and captain Todd Jarvis made a handy 35 (four fours). In reply the visitors were dismissed for 208 off 45.5 overs. Craig Cunningham in a a great spell had the Warriors in a spin and captured 5-41 off his 10 overs. Aaron Maddox 2/32 (8.5) and Luke Crosswell 2-45 (8) were the other wicket-takers.
In the other second grade match, Molesworth I went down to Montagu Bay at Geilston Bay in a close one. Needing 29 runs for victory with one wicket in hand, the visitors were dismissed just five runs short. Down the order at number nine, Brad Ransley made valuable 50 runs, hitting three fours and two sixes. Brother Josh Ransley opened the batting with a solid 39. Ransley hit four fours and two sixes. Jamie Adams was next best with 33 two fours. With the ball, Larry Menzie took 3-37 (7) and Jeremy Nichols and Daniel Coppleman took two wickets each. Final scores were Montagu Bay 9/238 off 50 overs defeating Molesworth I 10/233 off 39.1 overs.
In fourth grade, playing at home, Bothwell I had a good six wicket win over Bushy Park. Bushy won the toss and elected to bat and from there not much went right and the side was bowled out for just 60 in 17.5 overs. After taking a 5fa in the T20 Super Bash, Craig Pursell again got among the wickets, taking 4-27 off 7 overs. Brock Nichols bowled just 1.5 overs to take great figures of 3-6. Nathan Eyles took 1-6 off 2. In reply, Bothwell chased down the runs off just 11.1 overs finishing 4/64. Stuart and Brad Eyles scored 16 runs each while Simon made 13.
Playing at home, Gretna II went down to bagdad by three wickets. Batting first, Gretna was bowled out for just 87. Dion Hay was the only batsman to get a start with 22. In reply, Bagdad got over the line, but was a bit shaky losing seven wickets. Adam Browning 2-18 (5) and Jake Campbell 2-24 (6.2) were the main wicket takers. Well done to Luke Wheeler who played his 50th game for Gretna II.
In the other fourth grade match, New Norfolk II went down to Hobart by seven wickets at Tynwald Park. Batting first, New Norfolk was bowled out for 155 off 39.3 overs. Mitch Rice hung around for a patient 27 while Chris Ashcroft made 22 and Josh Walsh kept the critics at bay with a solid 19 runs. In reply Hobart finished 3/156 off 33.1 overs. Liam O'Brien took 1-26 off 9 overs and Josh Walsh off a long run up took 1-36 off 8 overs and Aaron Triffitt 1-18 (3).
Sixth grade saw Molesworth II suffer a big loss to the Marquis Tigers by 131 runs. After bowling out the Tigers out for 168, Molesworth was then skittled for just 37 runs off 16.1 overs. No player reached double figures with Mark Jablonski making 8. Five batsman failed to score and their were 19 extras. On a brighter note, young Jayden Wilton who is also the keeper, put his hand to bowling and finished with very good figures of 3-13 off 5 overs. Liam Triffitt also showed promise taking 2-26 (7) while Chris Slater did his bit with 1-6 (4).
New Norfolk III had a four wicket win over Claremont at Abbotsfield Park in seventh grade. The home side batted first, making 8/125 off 41 overs. Cody Morgan-Coleman opened the bowling and captured 3-8 off 9 overs in an superb spell of line and length bowling which included four maidens. Liam Kalbfell took 2-17 (6) and Andy Callander 2-26 (9). With the bat the Red Caps got the runs finishing 6/128 off 24.3 overs. Shayne Upton 25 runs and David Mitchelmore 19 both opened the batting. Stuart Muir made 17 while Jye Bearman got a handy 12 runs.
The results for the eighth grade Bothwell v Old Beach at Old Beach were unavailable at the time of writing.
