Education awards for three locals

THERE were three local winners in the Tasmanian Department of Education Awards for 2016, recognising outstanding work in the public education sector.

Education and Training Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the awards, now in their fifth year, were an opportunity to recognise and reward staff and volunteers who demonstrate excellence in their roles supporting education.

"All the winners of the 2016 RBF Department of Education Awards for Excellence exemplify the high-quality work that is undertaken every day by staff and volunteers across the department," Mr Rockliff said.

"Awards such as these recognise the significant work being undertaken in the education sector, sharing information and skills that will ultimately lead to improved processes and learning outcomes for students and their communities. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of all of the amazing educators working together for a brighter future for this state. Working together, learning and growing from each other is pivotal to our success," he said.

Among the 17 award recipients were three from Derwent Valley schools:

• Outstanding Young Teacher of the Year: Alison Harvey, New Norfolk Primary School
• School Business Manager of the Year: Rhonda Turner, Collinsvale Primary School
• Volunteer of the Year Award: Doug McKenzie, Westerway Primary School (tied with two other volunteers)
