SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in the Upper Derwent Valley, Furneaux Islands, Western, South East, North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central North, Central Plateau and Midlands Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:03 pm Friday, 13 January 2017.
A low pressure system will pass to the south of Tasmania on Saturday morning, with the associated cold front currently clearing the northeast of the state. Strong to fresh and gusty northwesterly winds will turn westerly overnight and strengthen to gales, particularly about the coasts early tomorrow morning.
DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS around 60 to locally 70 km/h, with peak gusts of 100 km/h, are forecast across the state from early tomorrow morning.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.
The strongest gusts are currently confined to elevated and coastal locations, with 126 km/h observed at Maatsuyker Island, 111 km/h on Scotts Peak and Mt Wellington, 102 on Mt Read and 100 km/h on Hartz Mountains.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11pm Friday.
