A SQUATTER is believed to have been the cause of a small fire at the derelict D Ward at Willow Court last night. Several units from the New Norfolk Fire Brigade responded to the incident, which was reported by a passerby at 5.50pm. The fire was quickly extinquished with little damage caused.
Also known as Derwent House, the two-storey building is adjacent to the oval and is the closest to The Avenue. It is owned by the Derwent Valley Council, which recently called for expressions of interest in the purchase of the three remaining buildings in that area following the destruction of F Ward/Franklin House. This section of Willow Court has been surrounded by construction site fencing since the F Ward fire in March.
