Back to Plenty this Sunday

The gathering will start at 11am at the Salmon Ponds, Salmon Ponds Rd, Plenty. Admission to the ponds will be $3 for those attending the reunion - be sure to let the people on the gate know that you are there for the Back to Plenty event. Tea and coffee will be supplied - bring your own picnic lunch.
Anyone who has been associated with the district or any of the following Plenty properties is welcome to attend: Glenleith, Redlands, Salmon Ponds, Kinvarra, Belmont, Charlemont and Ivanhoe. Casual workers such as hop pickers are also invited as are former students of the Plenty State School.
Southern cricket - round 17
AN excellent 194 from New Norfolk II batsman Richard Munnings helped the Red Caps to a huge 330-run victory over Dynnyrne at Wentworth Park on Sunday. New Norfolk racked up the massive total of 6 for 463 off its 50 overs, with four batsman making more than 50. Munnings belted 30 fours and two sixes during his stay at the crease. The century-maker had partnerships of 146 with Jamie Hill, 143 with Rohan Heron and 109 with Leigh Berry who also got amongst the runs with 82 (16 fours). Munnings was eventually bowled out with the score at 5-459. In reply the home side was no match for New Norfolk and was bundled out for 133. Brad Kemmler with three wickets and Ashley Morgan with two were the best of the Red Cap bowlers.
In Second Grade, Molesworth I kept its winning run intact, defeating Sandford by 177 runs. Molesworth had first hit making 233, with the Adams brothers Jamie 58 and Daniel 24 leading the way. In reply Sandford was bundled out for just 56. This was due to the great bowling of Mathew Smith 5-17 and Chris Slater 4-20. The pair skittled through the Sandford batsman like ninepins. It wasn't all good news for Molesworth though, with this match being moved to Bushy Park due to the pitch at Boyer Oval being vandalised.
New Norfolk I sewed up top spot on the Second Grade ladder with a hard-fought three-wicket win over Montagu Bay. The visitors had first dig and made 90. In reply the Red Caps made hard work of the run chase, losing seven wickets to only just grab a victory. All-rounder Stewart Rice stood tall for for New Norfolk, taking 4-10 off 10 overs and then top-scoring with 24. Josh Rowlands also bowled well, taking 2-24 off his 10 overs.
Gretna I suffered a shock loss to Derwent, going down by 142 runs. Chasing 210 for victory, Gretna was bowled out for 67 with Corey Ransley the only batsman to make double figures with 14. For the bowlers, Rhys Browning was the main wicket-taker with three.
Bushy Park went down to Runnymede by seven wickets. Nathan Grant and D. Colbeck both made 25 with the bat and Colbeck also took two wickets.
In the Fourth Grade, Gretna II had a great win over second-placed DOSA at Gretna. In his 200th match for Gretna, Bruce Emery top-scored with 66 while Joey Eyles made 55. Peter Jelkic (five wickets) and Matthew Eyles (three) did the damage with the ball. No other details were available of the match at the tome of writing.
In the battle for fifth spot in Fifth Grade, Moleswoth II was defeated by McRobies Gully by three wickets. Molesworth made the very good score of 276 only to be over-run in what must have been a great match. Piuselli 47 and Chaplin 41 were the top run-scorers while captain Brayden Hodge tried hard with the ball and took four wickets.

In the other Under 13 matches, both Gretna and New Norfolk recorded wins over New Town. This was the final round for all junior matches. It's been a great season by all and everyone is sure to be looking forward to the trophy presentations.

DROWNING OF AN INFANT AT NEW NORFOLK
About 5.20pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, February 25), members of Tasmania Police and Tasmanian Ambulance Service personnel were called to an address in Dixon St, New Norfolk for a 17-month-old infant male who had fallen into a backyard inflatable swimming pool.
The infant was found by family members and had no signs of life. Attempts were made to revive the child at the scene, however these failed and he was pronounced dead at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Police remind parents who have small inflatable pools to be extremely vigilant in their use and to isolate those pools when young children are not being directly supervised.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

NEW Norfolk's resident Greens politician Tim Morris MHA will hold a public function this weekend to discuss his party's achievements and proposals for next month's State Election.
The former Derwent Valley mayor has been a Member for Lyons since 2002. He has announced that he will be at the Derwent Valley Council social rooms in Circle St, New Norfolk, from 4-6pm this Saturday, March 1.
Mr Morris is one of a bumper crop of New Norfolk residents contesting the election and all are invited to submit profiles and campaign news to newnorfolknews@gmail.com.

Willow Court neglect "a national disgrace"
THE neglect of the Willow Court historic site was a national disgrace, Federal Parliament has been told. Making his maiden speech as the new Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson described New Norfolk as a town with a "deep soul".
"New Norfolk in the Derwent Valley is a service town for the agricultural and remaining forestry activity in the surrounding area," Mr Hutchinson told the House of Representatives. "New Norfolk has a deep soul, and many locals still have close and personal connections to the historically significant Willow Court, which was for many years Tasmania's institutional psychiatric asylum," he said.
"The buildings, which pre-date Port Arthur, are some of the oldest in the nation. It is a national disgrace that such significant architectural and social history is being neglected," he said.
Mr Hutchinson also revealed his own personal connection to local history, thought his ancestor Alexander Gill who married Susannah, a granddaughter of William Abel who had arrived in Sydney Town in 1792 as a convict. "He arrived in Elizabeth Town, now New Norfolk—via Norfolk Island—as a free man, and was granted 34 acres of land on the banks of the Derwent River. He built the King's Head Inn, which was licensed in 1822 and remains as the oldest continually inhabited building in Australia on what is now Valleyfield."

The event starts at 6.30pm, with a barbecue and music by the high school band. The movie, My Sister's Keeper (Rated M) starring Cameron Diaz, will be shown from 7.30pm. Admission is by gold coin donation. Soft drinks and popcorn will be available.

Premier pops in
TASMANIAN premier Lara Giddings today made her first visit to New Norfolk for the current State Election campaign. Ms Giddings used the Derwent Valley Online Access Centre in Charles St as the backdrop for her announcement that Liberal Party proposals to cut jobs from the public service would impact on services such as Service Tasmania shops, Online Access Centres, Child and Family Centres and libraries.
“These are all critical services that underpin strong communities and they are at risk from the Liberal Party’s savage job cuts. Online Access Centres like this one help create more connected communities and digital literacy," Ms Giddings said.

Molesworth I made it two wins in as many weeks with a good 45-run victory over Gretna I at Gretna. The visitors had first hit, making the defendable target of 187. Daniel Coppleman (37) and Nathan Eiszele (30no) led the way with the bat for Molesworth. Young Brock Nichols, who played his first match for Gretna I, bowled extremely well finishing with 3-34. In reply Gretna was bowled out for 152. Stand-in captain Ben Rainbird top-scored for his team with 41. Aaron Maddox (22) and Corey Ransley (29) also put on handy runs when at the crease. Mathew Smith led the way with the ball for Molesworth, taking 4-28 while Nathan Eiszele capped off a good day taking 3-33. The match swung both ways during the Gretna innings, but it was Molesworth who had the final knockout blow.
In the other second grade match, Bushy Park didn't get a start at Cambridge Oval due to the ground being too wet from the heavy rain overnight.
In the fourth grade match at Wentworth Park, Gretna II was defeated by Dynnyrne by two wickets. Gretna had first hit, making the good score of 213 with captain Joey Eyles making 41 (7x4s) and Jackson Ackerly made a quickfire 35 (6x4s, 1x6). In reply the home side was going along nicely at 3-139 off 30 overs, but some good fielding and good bowling from the Gretna attack got them back in the match, but when the eighth wicket fell, only two runs were needed and the home side won. Best bowlers for Gretna were Nick Wakefield 3-18, Todd Jarvis 2-16 and Clinton Millhouse 2-29.
In fifth grade, New Norfolk II went down to a more polished team in Lindisfarne by 106 runs. New Norfolk just couldnt get close to the 224 set by the home side and was bowled out for 118. Young Mitch Rice did well for the Red Caps, making 31 while Jamie Hill 4-32 and Richard Munnings 3-36 did their bit with the ball.

IN Round 3 of the Kookaburra Twenty20 Superbash second tier matches last Wednesday night, Gretna lost easily to the Knights at Abbotsfield Park. The Knights hit up the good score of 157 and in reply Gretna could only manage 43 after it was bowled out in the 13th over.
After some good matches this season, both Gretna and New Norfolk have now bowed out of the Twenty20 competition.

Local women nominate for Lyons
TWO New Norfolk women and a New Norfolk-born man are among the latest State Election candidates named at the weekend. The Tasmanian Greens have named recent Federal Election candidate Pippa Brinklow among its team of four to support the party's lead candidate and New Norfolk resident Tim Morris MHA, while the Tasmanian Nationals have endorsed New Norfolk's Anne Salt and former resident Brett Hall in that party's team of five for Lyons.
Mr Morris is the Greens' lead candidate and sitting Member for Lyons in the Tasmanian Parliament. “After serving 12 years in the Parliament on your behalf I have plenty of experience and enthusiasm to continue to represent the community well,” Mr Morris said on Friday. “Lyons needs to have a strong Green voice who will speak on environmental, social and economic matters concerning our dispersed communities. I am very pleased to lead a strong Green team who come from all corners of the electorate.”
Ms Brinklow is a registered nurse with qualifications in community service management and business management. She lives in New Norfolk with her partner Tim Morris and has spent the last 20 years developing and managing health and aged care, community housing and vocational education and training programs throughout Tasmania.
Adult literacy support worker Anne Salt is one of two Tasmanian National Party candidates with local connections. A New Norfolk resident for many years, she lists a number of community projects in her campaign material, including the positions of secretary and chairman of the Friends of Willow Court; co-ordinator of the New Norfolk Neighbourhood Watch (2009-2012); and service on the Derwent Valley Council's spatial planning committee and heritage trail committee. She is an advocate for Willow Court to be formally recognized as a “Site of Conscience”.
Also among the Tasmanian Nationals candidates is Brett Hall, now of Oatlands, who was born at New Norfolk and educated at Ouse District High School.

Reader's letter: the link road
MY husband and I drove from the Derwent Valley through to Judbury today (Saturday) on the Plenty Rd in our little car. No problems, good road, could be a bit better sign-posted. Why are tourists and other locals not told of this road? It is a long drive to the Huon through Hobart. I had been advised previously that the road was closed. I only saw one gate and that had obviously not been used for quite a while. The road did not have any holes and was not at all rutted.

Hydro seeking centenary stories

CEO Steve Davy said the business will recognise the milestone with a program of events and initiatives later in the year. The program is still being developed and will be announced in the coming months. The people who built the business will be the central focus of the celebrations.
"The Hydro is a significant part of Tasmania's story of the last 100 years and we think it is one worth recognising and telling," Mr Davy said. "However, it is more than just a corporate history," Mr Davy said. "The Hydro is part of the living memory of thousands of workers and their families. That's why we want to hear people's stories and make them a key part of the centenary program so we can share them with others and celebrate their contribution."

Aqua aerobics at Bushy Park
A THREE-WEEK aqua aerobics course starts tomorrow (Monday) at the Bushy Park Pool. Instructor Mary Downie says this is a gentle way to get a great workout for strength, cardio fitness and stretching. The class is open to men and women of all levels of fitness. Non-swimmers are welcome too.
The class starts this Monday, February 17, and continues on the next two Mondays, from 6-7pm. Participants are asked to arrive early for the first session as there is a form to fill out before starting. The cost is $10 per session.

Dragons on the Derwent
Organised by Dragon Boat Tasmania, the event has attracted 90 paddlers from all over the state as well as from Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. Event co-ordinator Julie Davidson said the event has lifted the profile of dragon boating as a sport for men and women in Tasmania. Dr Davidson said local dragon boat crews had been competing at national regattas for several years but the "4 Bridges" marathon was the first event to attract such a strong interstate contingent to Tasmania.
“It is a milestone for the sport in Tasmania to host an event like this,” Dr Davidson said. “Like any athletes, dragon boat paddlers enjoy a challenge and are prepared to travel across the country to participate.” Similar to the endurance paddle on the Northern Territory’s Ord River, the 4 Bridges will call on paddlers’ rhythm, strength and fitness to get them across the line.
Event officials will be watching the clock to get crews to the Tasman Bridge before Hobart’s notorious sea breeze kicks in. “After a four-hour slog downstream, we don’t really want to be powering up against a strong headwind and whitecaps on the Derwent,” Dr Davidson said. “Crews will be conscious of this and will be setting a good pace early in the day. We will be stopping for a mid-morning snack and to top up our fluid levels at Austins Ferry but it will be a short break.”
The crews will be evenly matched in terms of strength and experience and comprise paddlers from different clubs. The five boats will travel together down river shadowed by support vessels and should be quite a spectacle. While it is not a race, Dr Davidson anticipates the final leg approaching the Tasman Bridge could develop into a good-natured challenge.
The challenge starts at the New Norfolk Bridge at 7.45am this Saturday.

WITH temperatures into the mid-30s it sure was a hot weekend for cricket, reports Wade Gleeson. This didn't stop some good individual efforts and results. Gretna I batsman Mathew Burns piled on 129 runs in his team's Second Grade win over Sandford at Gretna. Burns belted the visitors bowlers, hitting 10x4s and 7x6s in a very good innings. Aaron Maddox was Gretna's best bowler, taking 4-28.
In the match at Pontville between Molesworth I and New Norfolk I, Molesworth made the moderate score of 186, but this was enough to give them victory by 27 runs. Jamie Adams 48 and Nick Piuselli 46 were the best of the Molesworth batsmen, while Larry Menzie did well with the ball, finishing with 4-41. WITH temperatures into the mid-30s it sure was a hot weekend for cricket, reports Wade Gleeson. This didn't stop some good individual efforts and results. Gretna I batsman Mathew Burns piled on 129 runs in his team's Second Grade win over Sandford at Gretna. Burns belted the visitors bowlers, hitting 10x4s and 7x6s in a very good innings. Aaron Maddox was Gretna's best bowler, taking 4-28.
In the match at Pontville between Molesworth I and New Norfolk I, Molesworth made the moderate score of 186, but this was enough to give them victory by 27 runs. Soccer club tryouts this Sunday
SOCCER is about to start ramping up again for season 2014. The New Norfolk Soccer Club will be having an informal kickaround on Tynwald Park this Sunday, February 16, from 10am. Colin Banks is trying to get a men’s team together and invites anyone interested in having a kick to pull on their boots and head down to Tynwald.
The club is asking any children and youths interested in playing this year to come down for a kickaround at the same time on Sunday morning. This will be for age groups Under 13 and up (12 to 18 years). Anyone wishing to register their juniors or youth players are welcome see Janine White at Tynwald Park at the same time.

Round 14
IN the match of the round in second grade, arch-rivals New Norfolk I and Gretna I played a classic game at Tynwald Park with the Red Caps winning by 13 runs. The home side had first hit, making the great score of 10 for 256. R. Graham batted very well making a fine 72 with nine well-struck fours. Jamie Maddox is always handy with the bat and contributed a well-made 40. In their last three overs the Red Caps put on valuable runs which made the difference at the end. Daniel Browning and Craig Cunningham bowled well capturing three and two wickets respectively. In the run chase Gretna started slowly and at one stage were 4-66 with Damien Hack, the fourth batsman out, making 47. From here Glenn Blackwell 75 and Ben Rainbird 70 put on a partnership of 122 and when Rainbird was out the score was 5-188. Gretna edged closer and wanted about a run a ball for the final four overs with four wickets in hand, but it wasn't to be. They were bowled out in the final over, giving New Norfolk victory and a 12 point buffer on top of the ladder. Stewart Rice is having a stellar season with the bat and took 4-58 while Josh Dykes 2-30 and Jamie Maddox took 2-57. This match ensures plenty of interest in the next matches with the top five teams all playing each other over the next four weeks. An interesting finals series beckons!
In the second grade match at Runnymede, Molesworth I defeated the home side by four wickets. Runnymede knocked up the good score of 221, but the Molesworth batsmen led by their captain Brad Coppleman with a fine 86 reached the target with seven overs remaining. Nick Piuselli put in a good innings of 43 while Brayden Hodge was the main wicket-taker with 3-12 and Chris Slater 2-24.
In the third match in second grade, Bushy Park went down to Sandford by 212 runs. Young Trent Grant tried his hardest all day, top-scoring with 17. He also did well with the ball, taking 2-37 off his 10 overs.
It just wasn't a good day for the Bushy Park boys who played one short and five batsmen failed to score. A few wins in the last four rounds could be the start for next season. Hang in there.
In the fourth grade match, Gretna at home easily accounted for Bagdad. The visitors won the toss and sent Gretna in who made a great score 9 for 284 off 50 overs. Leading the way with the bat was Brian Smith with a fine 74 and captain Joey Eyles 50 and a quickfire 25no from Tommy Allcock from down the order. Gretna was also assisted by Bagdad's bowling a massive 42 wides. In reply the visitors were dismissed for 125 with spin bowler Matthew Eyles being the main wicket taker with 5-25.
In fifth grade, Molesworth II hung on to its finals chances with a excellent eight-wicket win over Dynnyrne at Cadburys. The Molesworth bowlers did very well and kept the home side to a modest 9-161. Brad Ransley was captain for the day and led very well, taking 3-35 of 10 overs. Jye County and Dean King supported well with two wickets each. In reply, young dynamo Cody Neads stole the show with a glistering 86 runs. Neads smashed 76 of his total in boundaries. He can't be far away from a call up to second grade? Another youngster, Brayden Chaplin, made a good 32no with six well-struck fours. A very good win.
