WITH temperatures into the mid-30s it sure was a hot weekend for cricket, reports Wade Gleeson. This didn't stop some good individual efforts and results. Gretna I batsman Mathew Burns piled on 129 runs in his team's Second Grade win over Sandford at Gretna. Burns belted the visitors bowlers, hitting 10x4s and 7x6s in a very good innings. Aaron Maddox was Gretna's best bowler, taking 4-28.
In the match at Pontville between Molesworth I and New Norfolk I, Molesworth made the moderate score of 186, but this was enough to give them victory by 27 runs. Jamie Adams 48 and Nick Piuselli 46 were the best of the Molesworth batsmen, while Larry Menzie did well with the ball, finishing with 4-41. For New Norfolk, Jamie Maddox and Adrian Eiszele were the main run scorers with 19 each while Stewart Rice made 18 and also took 3-41 with the ball.
Bushy Park went down to Richmond/Cambridge by 10 wickets. Bushy was bowled out for 167 with Mitch Crosswell 56 and Rob Fazackerley 38 top-scoring. In reply Richmond/Cambridge had no trouble with the Bushy Park bowlers, reaching the target without losing a wicket.
In Fourth Grade, Gretna II had a good 78-run win over Derwent on Sunday. Peter Jelkic got back amongst the runs, top-scoring with 62 and hitting 5x6s and 3x4s, while young Nathan Eyles came up from the Under 15s and made a quickfire 26 not out with two fours and two sixes. Jelkic followed up from his big hitting and took 4-24 while Matthew Eyles took 4-34.
In Fifth Grade, Molesworth II did its finals chances no harm with a 90-run win over Old Beach. Brad Ransley 48 and Nathan Hay 43no led the way with the willow, while captain Brayden Hodge 4-28 and Brad Ransley 2-5 were the best bowlers.
New Norfolk II suffered a big loss at home, going down to Montagu Bay by 173 with the visitors smacking a very big total of 310. Red Caps captain Stephen Nichols tried hard, making 37 not out while Nathan Rice backed his excellent bowling in the Twenty20 taking 3-28. This lad who has only just turned 13 has a bright future ahead. Well done young man.
