POLICE have advised motorists to avoid the Bridgewater Bridge. The lift span is jammed in the open position and work is under way to fix the problem. Traffic is reportedly backed up for kilometres in both directions.
Metro Tasmania has advised that buses its buses will not be able to cross the bridge for two hours and urges its passengers to join buses travelling via the Bowen Bridge.
Police are directing traffic and ask motorists to use the Bowen Bridge or New Norfolk Bridge until further notice.

2.30PM UPDATE: Police advise that the bridge is now back in operation.
