Roadtrip for the Eagles tomorrow

SFL Season 2015
Round 14 Preview

By BEN HARRISON
THE East Coast Bombers have made hard work for themselves holding onto third spot and the double chance in the finals race after going down to Brighton in the last round and things won’t get any easier as they take on a rampaging New Norfolk at Triabunna tomorrow (Saturday).

In turn, the Bombers may be advised to not look too deeply at the Eagles' form over the last three rounds. Following a thrashing of Lindisfarne by over 100 points the Eagles then took to the Tigers by the tune of 23 goals and last weekend battered Cygnet again by more than 20 goals.

The Bombers will just have to try to get first hands on the football to restrict the scoring opportunities for the Eagles who last week had 13 different goal scorers. In a direct opposite the Bombers could only manage six majors and will need to find many more avenues to goal if they are to stay in this contest.

Player to watch: Brayden Chaplin (New Norfolk)

Prediction: New Norfolk by 52 points.

Two from two for the Eagles

SFL Season 2015
Round 13 Review

By BEN HARRISON
WHILE Cygnet remained goalless up until half time in the clash with a rampaging New Norfolk on Saturday, the Eagles peppered the goals but didn’t fully punish the Port - only slotting 10 majors from 24 scoring shots.

By the day's end it was 44 scoring shots to 12 and the reliable forward targets of Clayton (4), Gardam (3) and Wilson (2) were once again hitting the scoreboard as the Eagles shared the spoils amongst 13 individual goalkickers.

Two goals for the day for the Port shows what a difference a week makes after Cygnet turned its form around the week prior against Brighton. Kane Nielsen and Mitch Direen tried hard for Cygnet and Jacob Wigg and Brayden Chaplin were the best for New Norfolk.

New Norfolk won in the Reserves by 175 points and had a bye in the Colts competition.

SENIORS
New Norfolk 6.9 (45) 10.14 (74) 14.19 (103) 23.21 (159)

In the other games at the weekend:

Huonville 20.22 (142) d Hobart 5.9 (39)
THE clock was wound back on Saturday at Huonville Oval as Huonville coach Tim Lamprill singlehandedly took apart the Hobart Tigers defensive structure and bagged eight goals for the day as the Lions romped to victory by 103 points. In the reserves it was victory to the Huonville Lions again by 103 points and in the early game in the SFL U18s the Huonville Lions won their Colts game against Brighton by 10 points.

Brighton 13.14 (92) d East Coast 6.8 (44)
THE wavering form of the East Coast Bombers continued as they just held on to third spot on the ladder after falling victim to Brighton at Pontville on Saturday. In the Reserves game Brighton won by 67 points but the Robins lost their SFL Colts game against Huonville Lions by 10 points.

Dodges Ferry 13.12 (90) d Sorell 8.12 (60)
THE derby at Dodges saw a fantastic result for the home team which took the points and leapt their opponents on the ladder in the process. Dodges Ferry won the Reserves game by four points and in the SFL Colts game the result was reversed as Sharks went down to Sorell by seven points.

Claremont 8.21 (69) d Lindisfarne 7.7 (49)
THE Magpies easily accounted for the Two Blues in their clash at Abbotsfield Park in what didn’t appear to be a match between two of the top four sides in the competition. Claremont had a big win in the Reserves by 162 points and also won the Colts to defeat Lindisfarne by 26 points.

Water talks this Wednesday

THERE will be one last information session at Glenora this Wednesday for any local residents wanting to find out more about the proposal to introduce a town water supply in the area.

A recent decision to build a new water scheme at nearby Gretna means the same opportunity can be extended to Bushy Park and Glenora as the Gretna supply will have to connect to the Lake Fenton pipeline via Bushy Park. This will provide access to a safe supply that meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and the provisions of the Tasmanian Public Health Act (1997).

TasWater will proceed with the proposal if there is support from about 80 per cent of the property owners who would be eligible to connect. In August the company will approach affected property owners for their decision on whether they would like to connect. Before then, residents are invited to seek more information and share their views via the TasWater website or at the community information session at the Glenora Online Access Centre, Gordon River Rd, any time between 1-3pm this Wednesday, July 29.

For more information phone TasWater community engagement officer Miriam Rule on 6237 8852 or send an email.

Another big Eagles win tipped

SFL Season 2015
Round 13 Preview

By BEN HARRISON
AFTER a stirring win over Brighton at Kermandie last weekend, Cygnet makes the road trip to Boyer tomorrow and would be best to not look back at the Eagles form from the last two rounds.

Following a thrashing of Lindisfarne by over 100 points a fortnight ago, the Eagles then took to the Tigers to the tune of 23 goals last weekend.

Cygnet will just have to try to be as competitive as possible and accept the challenge presented.

Player to watch: Nic Clayton (New Norfolk)

Prediction: New Norfolk by 72 points.

LAST WEEKEND'S REPORT
A SCINTILLATING 13 goal to two first quarter set the scene for the day last Saturday as second-placed New Norfolk exposed the difference between the top and bottom teams in the SFL competition with a 198 point victory.

In New Norfolk's 198-point victory, Nic Clayton finished with eight goals for the Eagles and SFL leading goal kicker Zeke Gardam added six to his season tally to reach 50 goals and take a clear lead in the race to be the highest goal scorer for season 2015.

New Norfolk had 12 different goal scorers compared to Hobart who could only manage six individual single goal kickers.

New Norfolk’s best player was Bryan Chaplin whilst Mark Young tried hard for the Tigers.

New Norfolk won in the Reserves by 189 points. Results of the Colts game with Clarence are not available.

Mayor's China trip was personal

A RECENT visit to China had been a personal trip, Mayor Martyn Evans told last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting in response to a question from Councillor Paul Belcher about the purpose of the international travel.

Cr Evans said his 12-day journey had been partly funded by contacts in China and no ratepayer funds were involved. Despite the personal nature of the trip, Cr Evans said he continued to promote the Derwent Valley as always. He met mayors, politicians, representatives of railways and airlines, promoting the municipality as a great place to visit, live and invest.

"It was a personal trip, funded by me and the Chinese," Cr Evans said in response to a follow-up question about whether the visit was a council activity.

Deputy mayor Ben Shaw congratulated Cr Evans on his initiative in opening up lines of communication with Chinese businesses and officials and Cr James Graham thanked Cr Belcher for asking the question.

Big win tipped for the Eagles

SFL Season 2015
Round 12 Preview

By BEN HARRISON
THE original home of cricket in Tasmania could be well served to get out some scoresheets and record books as it could be showers of goals forecast for this round’s footy clash between old rivals the Tigers and the Eagles at the TCA Ground tomorrow.

Some individual efforts will be the focus mainly around the goal scoring feats of SFL top goal kicker Zeke Gardam and the dynamic New Norfolk coach Caden Wilson who kicked six goals from 14 shots on goal last week.

One clash that could be worth the gate fee would be Tiger key forward Sam Reeves who has 37 goals for the season on the League’s most highly rated defender Rohan Heron. Reeves loves kicking goals at the TCA and Heron takes great pleasure in stopping forwards.

Last time these sides met the margin was in excess of 30 goals at Boyer in Round 3, but this time we are giving Hobart a smaller margin at home at the TCA and expect a victory to the Eagles by just over 100 points.

Player to watch: Mark Horne (New Norfolk)

Prediction: New Norfolk by more than 100 points.

Fire in empty supermarket

EMERGENCY services are at the scene of a fire in the rear of the old Foodworks supermarket in High St, New Norfolk.

The incident was reported at 3.23pm and three heavy tankers, one light tanker and a personnel carrier responded from the New Norfolk Fire Brigade, along with a unit from the Magra Fire Brigade.

UPDATE: The fire appears to have taken hold in a storage facility at the back of the building, which was built as O'Brien's General Store in 1929. No report has yet been received on the extent of the fire, although the brigade was on the scene for several hours.

In the 1960s O'Brien's Store was converted into a supermarket by Rayner Brothers before becoming the first Purity supermarket in the town. Following the opening of the newer Purity in Charles St in 1983 (recently replaced by the new Woolworths in George St), the old store traded under various names including Fabulous Foodmarket, Tiger Superbarn, Tas Everyday, New Norfolk Neighbourhood Food Store and finally FoodWorks which was operated by Joe Mohammed until early 2012, since which time it has been vacant. It has been up for sale or lease for some time.

FURTHER UPDATE: The Mercury has reported that the fire was deliberately lit but no further information has been released by the police or fire brigade.

Two big wins for the Eagles

SFL Season 2015
Round 11 Review

By BEN HARRISON
A DEVASTATING 10-goal to one first quarter painted the picture for the rest of the day as second-placed New Norfolk exposed severe weaknesses in third-placed Lindisfarne’s armor with a 111 point victory at Boyer Oval on Saturday.

The Eagles went into the game on the same number of points as the Two Blues but the first quarter goal siege was enough to send them a game clear in second spot on the ladder. The Two Blues managed only one goal in the second quarter as the margin widened and were kept goalless in the final term which must be a major concern for their coaching staff more than halfway through the season.

New Norfolk coach Caden Wilson and SFL leading goal kicker Zeke Gardam both finished with six goals but it could have been much uglier had Wilson kicked straight as his total tally was 6.8 after missing some shots at goal. “In patches we were fantastic, especially during that first half. Some of the footy we played was great,” Wilson told the Mercury newspaper after the game.

Mark Horne was best on ground for the Eagles with zippy mid-fielder Josh Clifford also continuing his good form, whilst for the hapless Lindisfarne outfit Troy Cunliffe and Matt Phillips battled hard.

New Norfolk won in the Reserves by 156 points but lost to North Hobart in the Colts game.

In the other games at the weekend:

Claremont 20.18 (138) defeated Huonville Lions 4.13 (37)
At the start of the game it appeared that the Huonville Lions had come prepared for the challenge against ladder leader Claremont after taking a comfortable 16 point lead into quarter time. But that quiet first quarter was enough to shake the Magpies into action and to show why they are now sneaking ahead as premiership favourites as they piled on 18 unanswered goals across the next three quarters to leave the Huonville players and supporters in a state of shock as the Magpies surged to a 101 point victory. In the reserves it was victory to Claremont winning by 32 points.

Brighton 21.16 (142) defeated Hobart 14.11 (95)
Brighton has gone a long way toward securing the much sought after fifth spot on the SFL ladder after a comfortable 47 point victory over Hobart at Pontville. In the reserves Brighton won by 76 points.

Dodges Ferry 16.12 (108) defeated Cygnet 11.8 (74)
A win to the Dodges Ferry Sharks at home saw them string two wins in succession as they ran out comfortable victors by 34 points over Cygnet. Dodges Ferry won the reserves by 47 points.

East Coast 8.21 (69) defeated Sorell 7.7 (49)
East Coast stayed two games clear in fourth place on the ladder with a solid 20-point victory over Sorell at Lauderdale in what was an important game for the Bombers, who now are only one game behind Lindisfarne in third. The Bombers also won the reserves game by 38 points.

Three charged over Fairview fires

THREE local youths have been arrested following investigations into two house fires in New Norfolk over the weekend.

Two houses in Fairfax Terrace were damaged in fires that were deemed to be suspicious. The first, at 48 Fairfax Tce, caused about $20,000 damaged in the early hours of Friday, July 10. The second, at 16 Fairfax Tce around 1am yesterday, resulted in damage now estimated at $180,000.

Police say both houses were vacant and contained little property. Following investigations conducted by the Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Police, three youths aged 18, 17 and 15 years have been arrested and face charges of committing arson.

Two of the youths will be jointly charged with one count of arson in relation to the fire at 48 Fairfax Tce, and two will be jointly charged with one count of arson relating to the fire at 16 Fairfax Tce. They will all appear in the Hobart Court of Petty Sessions at a later date.

Police have expressed their thanks to the New Norfolk community for its assistance in the investigations into these fires.

Have your say on Bushy Park water supply

RESIDENTS of Bushy Park and Glenora have been invited to have their say on a proposal to introduce a town water supply in the area. A recent decision to build a new water scheme at nearby Gretna means the same opportunity can be extended to Bushy Park and Glenora as the Gretna supply will have to connect to the Lake Fenton pipeline via Bushy Park.

The project involves connecting Gretna’s existing system to the Fenton pipeline and building a new reservoir and filter. This setup provides Bushy Park and Glenora the opportunity to be connected to this system and gain access to a safe supply that meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and the provisions of the Tasmanian Public Health Act (1997).

TasWater will proceed with the proposal if there is support from about 80 per cent of the property owners who would be eligible to connect. In August the company will approach affected property owners for their decision on whether they would like to connect. Before then, residents are invited to seek more information and share their views via the TasWater website or at one of the following community information sessions at the Glenora Online Access Centre, Gordon River Rd:

  • Wednesday, July 15, any time between 1-3pm
  • Saturday, July 25, any time between 11am and 2pm
  • Wednesday, July 29, any time between 1-3pm.

Letter to the editor

I’D like to clarify a couple of points about the Mobile Phone Black Spot funding announced for the Lyons electorate last week (New Norfolk News, June 25, 2015). A number of people have expressed their concern about carriers who have won contracts to service particular country areas being different to those who already have communication towers in the area and what that will mean to service delivery.

The Federal Government can’t force a carrier to put a tower in a particular place but the government Mobile Phone Black Spot program has been designed to provide a subsidy to encourage carriers to construct towers in country areas where they would normally not go.

Carriers who propose taking up the government subsidy to provide a service in an isolated area need to let other carriers know of their ability to co-locate. They need to also consult with other carriers before they build a new tower to accommodate them in the future.

This Federal Government Mobile Phone Black Spot program is a well thought out and considered program aimed at maximising the value of the taxpayer dollars being used as part of this subsidy.

New Norfolk tipped tomorrow

SFL Season 2015
Round 11 Preview

By BEN HARRISON
NEW Norfolk returns home to Boyer Oval tomorrow to take on Lindisfarne and try to restore a little order after a disappointing performance last round against Claremont. The Eagles will meet an in-form Lindisfarne who have not done a lot wrong since the last time these two teams met in Round 2. On that occasion the Eagles travelled to Anzac Park after an earlier loss to the Magpies and solidly accounted for the Two Blues.

Eagles coach Caden Wilson is unquestionably the leader for New Norfolk and he will most likely be missing from on-field after a hamstring strain last round and the loyal Boyer faithful would be hoping that the likes of veteran on-baller Roger Belcher will continue to lead the way to get the Eagle machine back on track.

Rohan Heron will have to lead his defence as well as ever and make sure Brody Phillips doesn’t end up with another big bag after finishing with six goals last round. Keep an eye out for Declan Crawford and Phillips to continue their good form for the Two Blues in what could also be an upset if the Eagles are not on their game.

Player to watch: Roger Belcher (New Norfolk)

Prediction: New Norfolk by 24 points.

Home from wonderful Copenhagen

Chris Rice leading the band in Denmark.
RESULTS are not yet to hand but the Derwent Valley Concert Band has arrived home from its latest overseas tour.

The band had to leave Denmark before the announcement of results of the World Championship of Marching Showbands on Sunday and arrived back in Hobart on Monday night.

Late last week the band took part in a parade in the streets of Copenhagen, the Danish capital, and several images of that event have been sourced from Facebook.

Crikey ABC, how wrong can you be?

NEWS that a privately-owned building at Willow Court is for sale on the internet has spread like wildfire on both social and traditional media this week.

Apparently posted on the Gumtree classified advertising website by owner Hadyn Pearce at the weekend, the 1860s Ladies Cottage (later called J Ward) had an asking price of $875,000 but this has since been changed to "negotiable".

A gallery of photos has also been added to the listing, which can be seen here.

The story has been picked up by the Mercury and the ABC, with the latter publishing a sensational (and sensationally incorrect) article. The national broadcaster's story (pictured) wrongly describes the building as an asylum for criminally insane women; incorrectly names the owner as Hadyn Dare and Hadyn Ware; and claims that the building is also known as Lachlan Park Asylum.

This comes from the same broadcaster that last week wrongly announced Eve Askew (missing from Fitzgerald since 1991) had been successfully located three years ago.

What was the Ladies Cottage? A private hospital for fee-paying patients

New search for Lucille

Lucille Butterworth
NEW information about the 1969 disappearance of Lucille Butterworth has prompted police to excavate an area alongside the Lyell Highway between Granton and New Norfolk.

Miss Butterworth, then 21, was last seen in Claremont on August 25, 1969. At about 5.45pm that day, she disappeared from a bus stop near the corner of Box Hill Rd and Main Rd. She had intended to catch a bus to New Norfolk.

Police say they have recently received new information relating to a man who remains a person of interest in the case. As a result, they will excavate a site beside the Lyell Hwy, near Granton.

“The family of Lucille Butterworth deserves to know what happened.  Her brothers have lived for 46 years not knowing where she is or how she died,” Detective Inspector David Plumpton said. “We’re determined to do all we can to bring them some understanding of what happened,” he said.

“We also hope that this operation, together with the forthcoming coronial inquest, will prompt someone else with knowledge or memories of the events that night to come forward and talk to us.  It’s never too late.” The operation will begin early next week and is expected to take several weeks. It will include forensics police and excavation equipment.

Contrary to reports on the ABC today, Eve Askew - missing from Fitzgerald near Maydena since 1991 - was not successfully located at Karanja three years ago and remains missing.

Did you see the Granton crash?

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a two-vehicle crash on the Lyell Highway that left two local people seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon. Three people were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital following the crash that occurred near Granton at about 4.40pm.

Involved in the head-on collision were a westward-bound white Toyota Corolla sedan being driven by a 67-year-old New Norfolk and a blue Subaru station wagon which was being driven in the opposite direction by a 46-year-old woman from Glenfern.

"The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota was extricated from the vehicle by emergency service personnel.  He and the driver of the Subaru were conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital. The passenger in the Subaru, a 64-year-old man from Glenfern was also conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital," Acting Sergeant Bradley Coulson said.

"The crash occurred on a straight section of road.  At the time the weather was fine and roadway dry. Due to the crash the Lyell Highway was closed for a period of approximately four hours whilst investigations were made and the scene was cleared," Acting Sergeant Coulson said.

Police would like to hear from any member of the public who may have witnessed the crash or seen either vehicle beforehand. Contact Acting Sergeant Coulson on 6230 2111.

Tough day at the office for the Eagles

SFL Season 2015
Round 10 Review

By BEN HARRISON
CLAREMONT has moved a game clear in first spot on the SFL ladder after defeating New Norfolk for the second time this year. Early season victories by the Magpies over the Eagles are commonplace but a rarity by the time the season goes on.

The 26-point victory at Abbotsfield Park gives Claremont a greater chance of finishing top of the ladder at the end of the season and the rewards of a week’s break and a home final with a potentially clear path to the SFL Grand Final.

Claremont coach Kim Excell told the Mercury after the game that not too much should be assumed from the win, with his opposition coach and the Eagles' prime mover Caden Wilson going down early on with a hamstring injury. “We were quite pleased with the win but New Norfolk has a few players out,” Excell said.

Wilson, who is more than likely to miss at least two to three weeks, was disappointed in the Eagles first half which saw them trail by 41 points at the long break. “The conditions were pretty bad out there but to Claremont’s credit they used the conditions well,” Wilson told the Mercury.

Earlier in the day Claremont defeated New Norfolk by 57 points in the Reserves match.

There are no SFL games this weekend due to a competition bye.

In the other games last weekend:

Sorell 11.7 (73) d Huonville 9.10 (64)
SORELL managed to keep in touch with fifth spot on the SFL ladder following a hard fought contest against the Huonville Lions, running out victors by nine points. In the reserves it was victory to the Huonville Lions winning by 79 point.

Lindisfarne 17.7 (109) d Brighton 7.15 (57)
LINDISFARNE all but cemented a top three spot for season 2015 after a one-sided match against Brighton, winning by 52 points at Anzac Park that sees them move two games clear of the east Coast Bombers in fourth and saw Brighton give up fifth spot on the ladder to the Huonville despite its loss to Sorell.  In the reserves Brighton won by 54 points.

Dodges Ferry 18.12 (120) d Hobart 10.16 (76)
A WIN to the Tigers at home would have seen them stay in touch with fifth spot on the weekend, but a fired-up Dodges Ferry was not prepared to let that happen and ran out comfortable victors by 44 points.  Hobart won in the reserves by 75 points.

East Coast 15.13 (103) d Cygnet 8.5 (53)
EAST Coast secured a critical win to move two games clear to win fourth place on the ladder with a fantastic 50-point victory over Cygnet at Cygnet. East Coast also won the reserves to defeat Cygnet by 38 points.
