Three charged over Fairview fires

THREE local youths have been arrested following investigations into two house fires in New Norfolk over the weekend.

Two houses in Fairfax Terrace were damaged in fires that were deemed to be suspicious. The first, at 48 Fairfax Tce, caused about $20,000 damaged in the early hours of Friday, July 10. The second, at 16 Fairfax Tce around 1am yesterday, resulted in damage now estimated at $180,000.

Police say both houses were vacant and contained little property. Following investigations conducted by the Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Police, three youths aged 18, 17 and 15 years have been arrested and face charges of committing arson.

Two of the youths will be jointly charged with one count of arson in relation to the fire at 48 Fairfax Tce, and two will be jointly charged with one count of arson relating to the fire at 16 Fairfax Tce. They will all appear in the Hobart Court of Petty Sessions at a later date.

Police have expressed their thanks to the New Norfolk community for its assistance in the investigations into these fires.
