MAYDENA - GELL RIVER BUSHFIRE
Incident information
The bushfire at Gell River continues to burn, currently under an Advice Alert and is approximately 17,500ha in size.
Weather conditions eased overnight which is helping firefighting efforts today. The fire is still uncontained and people need to remain alert and stay up-to-date with any changes through the TFS website and ABC local radio.
Priorities for the Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania are:
- Targeted firefighting efforts to hotspots and active fire edges, and
- Assess options to control the fire over the coming week.
Today, infrared scanning of the fire is being done to identify hotspots for on-the-ground crews and water-bombing activities. There will be increased aircraft activity in the Maydena and surrounding areas.
The following walking tracks remain closed:
- Timbs Track
- Adamsfield Track
- Vale of Rasselas Track
- Lake Rhona Track
- Denison Traverse
- Squirrel Creek to Lake Curly Track, and
- Sawback 4WD Track and access to Adamsfield.
Benign weather is currently forecast for the next five to seven days. This weather will assist the firefighting efforts and allow the creation of containment lines and asset protection plans.
Community meetings
Currently, no further community meetings are planned at this time.
