Mayoral tussle for Upper House seat

Deirdre Flint
CENTRAL Highlands Mayor Deirdre Flint has announced her intention to contest the Legislative Council division of Derwent following the impending retirement of the incumbent MLC, Michael Aird. A former senior member of the Liberal party, Mrs Flint, of Hollow Tree, will stand as an independent.

Mrs Flint's candidiature adds a new dimension to the campaign, challenging the endorsed Labor candidate Craig Farrell, who is deputy mayor of the Derwent Valley Council. Mr Farrell, of New Norfolk, has previously sought election to the House of Assembly as a candidate for the division of Lyons.

  1. How on earth can a person stand as an independent when they have been a 'senior member of the Liberal Party'? How faithful is that to a political party! When self-interest takes over the values and ideals supposedly held for many years, it makes you wonder just how genuine a candidate is. Same for Jenny Branch - what a pair of 'drop the party like a hotcake' when me me me is involved - boo. Although I am not a fan of 'whichever way the wind blows' Farrell, at least he has the intestinal to stand for the Labor party to which he belongs and is loyal!
Where is a Greens candidate? Are there any more "Independents" who have tossed their party/ies or are there going to be some TRUE Independents.

  2. The Libs aren't on their own: Cate Clark, sister of Labor senator Carol Brown, has resigned from the Labor Party to run as an "independent" candidate in Rumney, against the sitting labor member. That's party loyalty - not.

  3. I care about the Derwent electorate and would really like to see a TRUE independent stand as well - not one who has tossed their party aside or been a member of this that and the other!
There are a few out there who have a lot to say in various media, so why not give it a shot?
