Good results for robotics club's first year

MEMBERS of the Derwent Valley First Lego League team have been presented with certificates recognising their participation in a robotics-based problem-solving program this year.

Following  an information session on August 15 and a 10-week program from August 25 until October 27, the local team placed 10th out of 21 teams at the 2018 Tasmanian First Lego League competition on November 3 at the University of Tasmania's Inveresk Campus in Launceston.

This was the first year that there had been a Derwent Valley team has participating in the First Lego League. The competition involves students aged from 9-16 years in teams of up to 10, to build, program and compete with a robot at state, national and international levels.

The 10-week program was delivered by the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D’FAT) with the support of Children’s University Tasmania (operated by The Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment, University of Tasmania) at The Salvation Army's Derwent Valley headquarters. D'FAT also supported the team at the state competition.

Participants were mentored and coached by D'FAT members and Matt Hill with support of Children's University Tasmania and The Salvation Army's Derwent Valley Corps. D’FAT will continue to support the team next year.
