Australia's state and federal governments are taking action to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Use the links above to source the latest advice about what you can do to protect yourself and others. Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

Pay rise for councillors

TASMANIA'S local government councillors have received their yearly pay rise. Councillors throughout the state receive an allowance in addition to any expenses covered by their respective councils.

Each councillor receives a fixed allowance plus additional allowances for mayors and deputy mayors, all based on the size of the council. Each elected member of the Derwent Valley Council now receives $12,651 each year. The deputy mayor and mayor receive an additional $12,109 and $31,628 respectively.

Councillors around the state can also be reimbursed for telephone and internet use, travelling, and the care of any dependents while carrying out their duties. Derwent Valley councillors are also provided with a tablet computers.
