Warm conditions for Christmas parade

A BIG crowd withstood very warm conditions for the annual New Norfolk Christmas parade this afternoon. The pageant had about 28 entries, which was several more than last year.

Included were local schools, emergency service volunteers and businesses, doing two laps of the town’s High St. Shade was in short supply as the temperature climbed above 28 degrees but the parade kept everyone entertained.

The Derwent Valley Concert Band had a spring in its step, adding tinsel and other adornments to its uniform, as well as breaking into song at several intervals, much to the crowd's surprise and delight.

The parade was broadcast live on community radio station Tyga FM, with station manager Roz Chapman and Craig Farrell MLC giving a running commentary. The judging panel of Lyons MHR Brian Mitchell, Lyons MHA Guy Barnett and Derwent Valley mayor Ben Shaw named New Norfolk Primary School as having the best presentation in the parade, followed by the Tasmanian Chinese Buddhist Academy and the MoCo Dragon Boat Club.

New Norfolk’s Saturday market was suspended due to the parade but will return next Saturday from 8am-2pm in the town centre.
