Cheeky little place

NEW life has been breathed into a long-vacant shop in Burnett St, New Norfolk, which has recently reopened as "Cheeky Little Place", offering takeaway coffee and sweet and savoury treats. There are a couple of seats in the window and an application for footpath seating has been lodged with the council. The premises have been extensively renovated and fitted out.

The shop at 38 Burnett St is one of many that were built as extensions of existing houses in the streets off New Norfolk's main shopping strip in years gone by. In the early 1950s it was home to Ernie Vagg's electrical shop and was later one of the locations of Lew Rice's lolly shop. It is thought to have once been a butcher's shop and in the 1980s was the original location of Len Blackwell's Norfolk Cycles bike shop.

Cheeky Little Place is open on weekdays from 8am to 4.30pm. Congratulations to all involved in this new venture.

Hospital document up for sale

A REMARKABLE piece of New Norfolk history has turned up for sale on eBay with an equally remarkable price. A Melbourne seller is seeking  a starting bid of $99.99 for a printed invoice from the Hospital for the Insane, New Norfolk (now Willow Court).

Dated October 1864, the invoice for £7 10/- (about $16) appears to be for one month's "medical treatment and maintenance" for a private patient named Leake. It was promptly paid by cheque a few days after being issued.

The item can be viewed here. Readers can decide for themselves whether the seller is "dreaming".

Junior cricket registration coming up

GRETNA Cricket Club will again be fielding Under 13 and Under 15 teams in the Cricket Tasmania Youth League Competition this summer.

The Under 13s will be coached by Darren Stevenson and the Under 15s by Owen Browning. Registration day will be Friday, September 16, at the Gretna sports ground from 4.30pm. A barbecue will be provided. Training will start on Friday, September 23, at Gretna at 4.30pm.

The registration fee for the 2011-12 season will again be $30. This covers a Gretna playing shirt, hat, trophy and affiliation fee. The $30 does not have to be paid on the registration day, but if you are able to, it would be appreciated.

If your child is unable to attend the registration day and would like to play, you can register at the first training run or phone the junior co-ordinator on 0429 704 677 to add your child to the list. This will help as the teams need to be nominated by October 7.

Junior cricket is open to boys and girls. Players must be under the specified age as at September 1, 2011. If your child turns 15 before September 1, he or she maybe still able to play as the club can request a dispensation in some circumstances.

Junior best and fairest named

100-gamers Dylan Pearce & Jacob Daley
THE New Norfolk Junior Football Club held its Under 13-15 best and fairest count at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms on Friday night.
  • In the Under 15 count, Jacob Daley collected 57 votes to take out the Geoff and Carol Horne best and fairest medal, well clear of runner-up Brandon King (39 votes).
  • The Under 14s Peter Birchall Medal was won by Hayden Smith. Hayden won with 43 votes, ahead of runners-up Hayden Bielleman and Brayden Chaplin on 29 votes each.
  • In the Under 13s Stephen and Tina Rhodes Medal it was a very close count with Cooper Triffitt taking the honours with 34 votes, just three votes clear of runner-up Dakoda Smith on 31 votes.
The night was well attended and many stayed on to watch the NNDFC colts, reserves and senior medal counts afterwards. The idea to hold the junior count in conjunction with the senior club B&F counts was a great initiative and those who organised this should be congratulated. It is great to see the junior and senior clubs working together.

Another great initiative this season was the naming of medals after some long serving members of the NNJFC. This shows great respect to those who have made the junior club what it is today. On behalf of all the parents I would like to take this opportunity to thank the terrific and hard-working Chris Lovell, Kathy Adams and David Banks who have yet again done a superb job in running the NNJFC. Their hard work is very much appreciated, thank you.  Congratulations to all trophy winners and see you all next season.

Centenary celebrations this Saturday

Bushy Park's Upper Derwent United Hall around 1915.
HISTORICAL displays, market stalls, a sausage sizzle and period-dress performances will be among the attractions at the Bushy Park Hall's centenary celebration this Saturday from 10am.

Officially the Upper Derwent United Hall, the building was erected in 1911 on land donated by Vincent Shoobridge. A landmark in the local community, the hall has served many purposes over the years. Today it hosts a community market and is home to the Upper Derwent Anglers as well as the Oddfellows Lodge.

The market is open daily, providing an outlet for community members to sell their goods and contributing to the cost of maintaining the hall. Turnover in the last year exceeded $70,000, returning $12,000 to the hall funds through commissions and donations.  This income made possible the recent significant electrical upgrade to the entire building.

One of the rooms in the hall has been allocated for a display of depicting historic photos, artefacts and video footage of the district and its hop-growing industry.

The hall will be open from 10am for the centenary celebration this Saturday, August 27. The Upper Derwent Anglers' Club will have a sausage sizzle and the International Order of Oddfellows will celebrate its 100 years occupancy with a rare open day and display of ceremonial regalia. An official welcome will be given at 1pm.

Buildings leased for youth project

THE Derwent Valley Council will take a lease on the former business enterprise centre in Blair St, New Norfolk, to provide accommodation for a youth education program.

In a written report to last week's council meeting, general manager Stephen Mackey recommended a two-year peppercorn lease prior to taking ownership of the buildings within two years' time.

Mr Mackey said the former Business Enterprise Centre had been identified as an existing and under-utilised building. He said the centre was considered suitable on a number of grounds:
  • It was close to but not attached to New Norfolk High School, providing easy access and a non-threatening environment.
  • It was a substantial building which would allow for expansion of the project over time
  • The building was currently under-utilised
  • The building was in sound condition requiring minimal work to make it suitable
    for the purpose
  • The building already had a known association with education.
"Council undertook initial discussions with the State Government to investigate the possibility of a peppercorn rental arrangement for the building, and have been successful in obtaining a lease for the building," Mr Mackey said in his report. "After a period of a maximum of two years the Crown will transfer the land to council," he said.

Mr Mackey said the buildings would become the base for the Real Action Forward Thinking (RAFT) project, council youth services, and non-government organisations providing youth service provision. "The goal is the facilitation of face-to-face collaboration between organisations. It is anticipated that, in the short to medium term, educational links for students at risk will be managed from this facility," he said.

"In the medium term the facility’s teaching spaces can be used for a range of courses for students disengaged or at-risk. There is opportunity for courses to be run which would be available for all students of the Derwent Valley and beyond," Mr Mackey said in his report. "Having a number of services housed in the same locality will provide a community focus for collaborative effort in evolving education and training. There is a possibility of hosting students and others from other areas of the state, interstate and overseas."

Speaking in favour of the proposal, Cr Judy Bromfield said the centre had been built by the Hydro as a school hostel and she had served on its board. It had not been properly used for a number of years and was ideally placed to provide a place for the many young people now on the streets. It would also provide a meeting space for staff and a place to learn skills such as cooking.

For a proposed rent of $1 for two years, the centre would provide a great service in helping to keep kids of the street, Cr Bromfield said. She proposed to pay half of the rent herself. In addition, a teacher was interested in renting rooms and this was in contrast to the current situation where taxpayers were funding a person to live there free, Cr Bromfield said.

Cr Damian Bester said he supported the educational ambitions of the project and believed this could be achieved without the council leasing the buildings. He said education was the responsibility of the State Government and as such the Education Department should lease the buildings, not the council. He noted that no business plan or financial details had been provided.

After comparing the proposal to what he described as the "debacle of Willow Court", Cr Bester sought to amend the motion and have buildings transferred to the Education Department. This was seconded by Cr Barry Lathey before being voted down by mayor Martyn Evans, deputy mayor Craig Farrell MLC and Councillors Judy Bromfield, James Graham and Narelle Hill. Councillors Scott Shaw and Jim Elliott were absent from the meeting.

Cr Farrell asked whether there had been any discussions about ownership being vested in the Education Department. The mayor said there had not, but Cr Bromfield said there had. She advised that the former education minister, Lin Thorp, had said the department could not afford the cost of running the buildings.

Cr Graham said his reading of the recommendation was that ultimate ownership of the buildings was only an option, not an ultimatum. Cr Bromfield concluded the debate by saying she had no argument with Cr Bester's position and said it would be great if the Education Department would take on the buildings, but this was not an option at present. When put to the vote, all councillors present voted for the propsal with the exception of Cr Bester who has since posted his remarks on his website.

New Norfolk runners-up in junior premiership

Running on to Kingston Oval
IN a hard-fought contest from start to finish, New Norfolk lost to Brighton by 20 points in the STJFL Under 14B grand final at Kingston yesterday. The first quarter saw both teams go hard at the ball with neither side giving an inch. Brighton kicked the first two majors but the Eagles hit back with two goals of their own and by the first change led by two points.

In the second quarter Brighton kicked away with a further three goals to New Norfolk's three behinds and the Robins' accuracy saw them lead by 13 points at the main break.

After regrouping in the change rooms the young Eagles needed a special effort to stay in the game. They responded by kicking two goals and four behinds to Brightons solitary point. The Eagles led by two points at three-quarter-time.

The game was now in the balance and the first five minutes of the final term saw the teams go head to head but it was Brighton who kicked away with four goals and one behind to New Norfolk's three majors and the Eagles went down fighting.

The young Eagles gave their all for the entire game and must be congratulated for their efforts. Considering Especially that we had only five players at the start of the season, making it to the grand final has been quite an achievement. Hold your heads high team - you all have a lot to be proud of.

Coach Josh Clifford should also hold his head high. His role in not only guiding the team to the grand final, but also as a role model to these young kids, has been terrific. The bond he has with them all holds things in great stead for next season. Well done and thank you Josh.

Hayden Bielleman
At the presentations after the game, Hayden Bielleman was presented with the best-on-ground medal. His running goal in the third quarter when the team needed a lift was great to watch. Congratulations cobber, you thoroughly deserved this award.

Thanks to all those who made the trip to Kingston to support the young Eagles, it really was much appreciated. New Norfolk has a great following, thank you. After the game an after-party was held at the Tomkinson's house. Thanks Graham and Annette for such a great time - it was just what we all needed.

Reminders: The Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 junior best and fairest vote count will be held this Friday at the NNDFC starting at 6pm. This will be followed by the Under 18s, reserves and seniors vote count. Cost for the night will be $5 for supper. Under 14 players please bring your footy jumper. To cap off the season our Under 14 trophy day will be September 24 at Tynwald Park, starting at 11am. Hope to see you all there.

Young Eagles into grand final

IN a great display of four-quarter football, the New Norfolk Under 14s cemented a spot in the grand final by defeating Sorell by 47 points at the TCA ground on Sunday. The Eagles led at every change and never looked like backing off.

New Norfolk led by seven points at quarter time and then kept Sorell scoreless in the second quarter to lead by 22 points at the main break. At three quarter time they had kicked further ahead to lead by 31 points. In the final quarter the Eagles hit top gear, kicking 3.1 to Sorell's three behinds.

The Eagles' teamwork and pressure was the difference between the two teams. The tackling was relentless to say the least. Nathan Wakefield was again at his best, finding the footy from all parts of the ground. His never-say-die attitude was adopted by the entire team.

Josh Berry dished up a football lesson to all his opponents. His marking down back and run-on play into the forward line was terrific. Josh Challenger once again moved up another gear, thriving on any challenge. After coming back from injury, backman Brodie Gleeson played an excellent game. Given the task on Sorell's best player, Brodie's pressure was a pleasure to watch.

Brayden Chaplin again held his own, taking many marks and setting up goals all day. Zoe Thurston was back to her best and also kicked a goal. Jack Evans kicked a great goal as did Charlie Stewart. Josh Whitford-Marriott was again damaging up forward as were Aaron Thorpe and Jahrod Locher, Jahrod's long bomb in the last quarter went straight through the middle.

New Norfolk will now play Brighton in the grand final. The venue will be announced during the week. It was great to see the number of supporters at the TCA and I urge you all to bring along all your family and friends to help get the young Eagles over the line.

Cyclist names New Norfolk as next challenge

THE Canberra cyclist who won this year's Tour of Geelong now has his sights set on next month's Launceston to New Norfolk event. Nathan Haas, 22, switched to full-time racing this year and finished ahead of 120 opponents to win the five-day Tour of Geelong yesterday. He also won last month's Tour of Gippsland.

Haas told the Geelong Advertiser that he was now looking foward to the Tour of Tasmania and the Launceston to New Norfolk Classic. The third running of the New Norfolk fixture will be on October 2, ahead of the Tour of Tasmania which starts on October 4.

Haas rides with the Tasmanian-based Genesys Wealth Advisors cycling team and his other successes this year include the Tour of Canberra and the Tour of Mersey. Read more about his Geelong win here.

Libs reaffirm federal candidate

Eric Hutchinson
THE Liberal Party yesterday named Eric Hutchinson as its endorsed candidate Lyons at the next federal election. “Eric Hutchinson has a strong association with the Lyons electorate both through his professional career as well as from his time as the Liberal Party’s Lyons candidate during the 2010 election,” spokesman Sam McQuestin said.

Mr Hutchinson has worked for Roberts Ltd for the last 13 years in its wool department. He sits on the board of the Brand Tasmania Council and has been involved in the development of an environmental accreditation scheme for Tasmanian farming businesses.

“I am looking forward to again getting out to meet the people of Lyons to talk about their concerns,” Mr Hutchinson said. “I am consistently hearing that Lyons residents feel let down by this Labor-Green Government. The Carbon Tax will impact Lyons residents badly and will be particularly devastating on farming businesses,” Mr Hutchinson said.

Young Eagle honoured

Josh Berry
NEW Norfolk Junior Football Club member Joshua Berry has been named the best and fairest Under 14 player in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League. The award was presented at King George V Oval last Friday night.

Coach Wade Gleeson described the win as a great achievement. "Josh has been a top cross country runner from a young age has shown great football ability since he first played in the Under 10s," Gleeson said.

Gleeson also paid tribute to team-mates Hayden Smith and Hayden Bielleman who were both in the running right up to the final round. "Josh received three votes in the final round against North Hobart to take out the medal," Gleeson said. Smith and Bielleman finished the count in third and fourth place respectively.

"Hayden Smith has had a great season after playing his previous seasons with Claremont, and would you believe it that this is Hayden Bielleman's first season of football? Well done boys," coach Gleeson said.

Top pharmacy tops in Tasmania

THE New Norfolk Guardian Pharmacy has been named the best in Tasmania. The announcement was made early last month and is a great credit to proprietors Gil Thomas and Belinda Bird. The business is New Norfolk's longest-established pharmacy.

Mr Thomas purchased the business from Barry Churchill in 2004 and soon embarked on a substantial enlarging of the premises by expanding into an adjoining shop. Being named Tasmania' best Guardian Pharmacy is well deserved accolade for the proprietors and staff of the chemist shop at the top end of High St.

New addresses returned to sender

RESIDENTS of Glen Dhu Rd at Molesworth will have their addresses returned to their old numbers after a fortnight of frustration. About 40 residents attended a meeting at the Derwent Valley Council Chambers on Monday night to demand the reinstatement of the rural addresses that had served them well enough for the last 15 years.

Most said they had not had any problems with their long-standing numbers until the council changed them without warning last month. Some expressed outrage that the council appeared to have advised the post office, emergency services and the titles office before notifying the affected householders.

Many believed their new numbers did not represent their physical distance along the road, which is the main principle behind Australia's rural addressing system. In some cases the new numbers were not consecutive and some switched between odd and even on the same side of the road. Some acknowleged that while their old numbers were not perfect, they were more realistic than the new numbers.

Council general manager Stephen Mackey said many of the issues of concern had already been resolved. Judging by their reactions, this news had not reached the householders. After nearly an hour of discussion, Councillor Barry Lathey summed up the mood of the meeting when he suggested that the previous addresses be reinstated.

Mr Mackey said he would write to all householders on Glen Dhu Rd, advising them of their old number and seeking confirmation of it. On completion of that process he would advise the relevant authorities that the old number had been reinstated. Mr Mackey would not be drawn on the matter of compensation for the costs involved in the multiple address changes, describing this as a private matter for each householder. He said this would be the subject of individual discussions.

Under 14s win first semi-final

Joshua Berry
THE New Norfolk Under 14s are just one win away from playing in the grand final after defeating North Hobart in the first semi-final on Sunday. With the game moved from KGV to the twin ovals at Kingston, the young Eagles were sluggish in the first quarter but managed to kick two goals. The Demons keep with them and at the first change the Eagles lead by a mere two points.

In the second term New Norfolk was beaten all over the ground by a more determined North Hobart. The Eagles were flat and looked like a side that had barely won a game all season. The Eagles couldn't add to the scoreboard as the Demons managed one goal and lead by five points at the main break.

The New Norfolk coaching staff gave the players a real rev up during the break, with coach Josh Clifford speaking about the lack of commitment and teamwork. The team rose to the challenge, kicking three goals and three behinds to North Hobart's solitary point. The Eagles were again up and about and by three-quarter time led by a handy 15 points.

The final term saw both teams give it their all, but New Norfolk refused to give in and ran away victors by 14 points. The hard running Josh Berry played a terrific game, taking many telling marks in the backline when it mattered most and was damaging when up forward. Nathan Wakefield played his best game for the season. His last quarter was just something. His courage, skill and determination was noted by all.

Josh Whitford-Marriott continued with his great form. Captains Jordan Eiszele and Brayden Chaplin both led from the front. These two continue to play well, week in week out. Quiet achiever Daniel Cooley showed great poise over the four quarters, his role up forward proving to be very handy. Mention must also go to the ever-reliable Josh Challenger. His cool head under pressure was a real factor in the team's victory. Aaron Thorpe and Brodie Gleeson made a welcome return from injury and will be better for the run.

New Norfolk will now play Sorell in the preliminary final. This should be a big tussle, with New Norfolk wanting to make amends for their five point lost to Sorell a few weeks back. The winner will go on to play Brighton in the big one the following week. Congratulations to Hayden Bielleman, Hayden Smith and Josh Berry on their invitation to the STJFL best and fairest this Friday night. Best of luck boys.

Council's got mail

MOLESWORTH residents will converge on the Derwent Valley Council Chambers tomorrow night (Monday) to hand-deliver their concerns about having their properties renumbered without consultation. Four Glen Dhu Rd residents attended a council workshop last Thursday to let councillors know of their concerns. General manager Stephen Mackey advised those present that he had invited affected property owners to a meeting at 7pm on Monday.

About 40 residents of the 7.5km long Glen Dhu Rd had recently been advised that their property numbers had changed. It is claimed that most had no knowledge the change was happening until they received a letter from the council in their now incorrectly numbered boxes.

Mr Mackey said an error had been found in the Glen Dhu Rd numbering, leading to a complete review which had identified that "predominantly all were incorrect."

Sue MacLaurin said her house number had been allocated in 1996 when the new system of rural addressing was introduced. It remained unchanged for nearly 15 years but had now been changed twice since December. She said the renumbering had caused confusion for mail deliveries and the local Census collector, particularly as some of the new numbers were not consecutive.

Councils throughout Australia and New Zealand follow a common standard for rural addressing based on the following principles:
  • A property's distance along a road determines its address number
  • Odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right
  • For every 10 metres, the number goes up by one

Under 14s storm into finals

Joshua Whitford-Marriott
ON Friday night in yet another great display of footy, the New Norfolk Under 14s defeated North Hobart by a whopping 81 points under lights at Tynwald Park. The Eagles dominated the entire game with the Demons being outclassed in every position held goal-less until the final quarter. The young Eagles had winners all over the ground.

Best-on-ground Joshua Whitford-Marriott played a terrific game, finding the footy from all parts of the ground. He had his opponents in a spin and also kicked two great goals. Jakob Triffitt played a great game also, having come into some great form in recent weeks. Ever-reliable Brayden Chaplin and Josh Challenger played their usual top games, while Charlie Stewart was again damaging up forward, kicking three goals.

Ruckman Jahrod Locher again showed his stuff and is running into some great form, while Kye Tomkinson, the hard running Josh Berry and Hayden Smith booted two great majors each. Hayden Bielleman, Jahrod Locher, Joshua Raspin and Nathan Wakefield all contributed, kicking a goal each.

The Under 14s have now won nine games from the 13 played, finishing third on the ladder. New Norfolk will play North Hobart in the first semi-final at KGV Oval, Glenorchy, this Sunday at 9.30am. We will wear black shorts and will use the Glenorchy Football Club change rooms.

New Norfolk will start hot favourites after Friday night's win, but finals can be a totally different ball game. I'm sure the team will be jumping out of their skins for this is the first time they will have played in the finals. Coach Josh Clifford will have them all ready to go and my tip is the Eagles won't let this opportunity slip as they have waited for this for quite some time. The hunger in their eyes says it all.

A friendly reminder to all that go along to the game: win, lose or draw, it's all about the kids. The umpires decisions are final and that must be respected for the entire game. Everybody's behaviour counts. See you at the footy. "CARN THE EAGLES!"
