THE Discovery Ranger Summer Program continues at many national parks this week, including Mt Field National Park in the Derwent Valley. A Discovery Ranger will offer free fun and educational activities at various times.

Muster market cancelled

A MARKET scheduled to be held in association with a country music muster at New Norfolk in February has been cancelled.

The music festival will be held at Boyer Oval on February 8, supported by the Derwent Valley Council, Lions Club of New Norfolk, New Norfolk District Football Club, Molesworth Cricket Club and Tyga FM. Tickets sales and more information is available at www.centertainment.com.au.

Christmas lunch in New Norfolk

A FREE Christmas lunch will be available at the St Matthew's Church Hall in Bathurst St, New Norfolk, from noon on Christmas Day tomorrow. The lunch is provided by the churches of New Norfolk, particularly for those who may be on their own at Christmas. Lunch starts at noon and The theme is "bring a friend or come and make a friend."

There will be a Christmas Eve service at St Matthew's at 11 tonight and the Christmas Day service will be at 9.30am.

THE New Norfolk Fire Brigade will help Santa Claus to get around New Norfolk tomorrow afternoon and evening before heading off on his work for the night.

The fire brigade will drive Santa around as many local streets as possible, stopping at the following locations to distribute lollies.

Mumbles' milestone

Brian Smith

IN the Gretna II cricket match played last weekend, Brian "Mumbles" Smith chalked up his 250th club match for Gretna.

Smith has given great service to the club since joining back in season 1999/2000. The 51-year-old cricketer has also played with various other clubs, more notably the now defunct Glenora/Ellendale team.

He has now racked up around 500 matches in all, and one would say he is a true legend of not only cricket in the Derwent Valley, but in cricket over all.

Extended hours at Bushy Park Pool

WITH the start of school holidays today, opening hours at the Bushy Park Swimming Pool will be extended. From today, the pool is open from noon to 6pm on weekdays and 10am-6pm on weekends. The pool will be closed on Christmas Day.

Jump into January with some swimming lessons at the pool. On offer is a five-day intensive program costing $40 plus pool entry. Classes will be held between 10am and noon, Monday to Friday. Bookings are essential - call 0417 415 756.

Lifeguard Sharyn Loller is also a "bronze star squad" on Saturdays at 8.45am. This is for fitness and fun while improving endurance and style, learning some lifesaving and survival skills. All welcome. The cost is pool entry plus gold coin donation. Bronze star is the first level of the recognised Royal Life Saving program and some participants may achieve their bronze star by the end of the season.

• the barbecue is fixed permanent structure.

Portable gas and electric barbecues may be used provided:

• The barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings).

Additional conditions that apply to the use of portable electric and gas fired barbecues and barbecues in public reserves and campsites:

• the area for 3 metres around and above the barbecue is completely cleared of flammable material.
• an adult is in attendance at all times
• a tap with hose connected is ready for use
• at least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of emergency.

Commercial caterers are required to obtain a special permit from your TFS Regional Office.

2001 - a news odyssey

THE New Norfolk News has today posted its 2000th news item since the website was established in July 2008.

The 1000-article milestone was reached in March 2012 and the second thousand has rolled around 18 months later.

Council pair back Palmer party registration

TWO Derwent Valley councillors are among the 100 Tasmanians who have endorsed the Palmer United Party's application to be registered as a political party in Tasmania.

Councillors Chris Lester and Wayne Shoobridge are named as registered members of Palmer United along with a number of fellow Derwent Valley citizens in a notice published in today's press.

Also among the registered members is Len Butterworth who has been closely scrutinising the council for the last few years.

Southern cricket

THANKS to an unbeaten 131 from Leigh Berry, New Norfolk II recorded a 189-run win over a hapless Richmond/Cambridge at Richmond in fifth grade cricket last weekend. Berry opened the batting and hit 16 fours in his innings, sharing an 84-run partnership with fellow opener and captain Stephen Nichols. Berry batted through the innings of 50 overs, setting up the big total of 285. In reply Richmond/Cambridge was no match for the Red Caps bowlers with Jamie Hill 4-8 and Brad Kemmler 4-29 skittling the home side for just 96. Nathan Rice and Adam Nossiter chipped in with a wicket each.

In other matches, Molesworth I chased down Derwent's total of 216 to win by four wickets. Nathan Eiszele and Jamie Adams both made 50s while Dean King bowled well for his first match in second grade, taking three wickets. Nathan Eiszele capped off a good day taking two.

Molesworth II defeated Sorell by 148 runs. Brayden Chaplin 74 and Cody Neads 60 really showed the opposition how to bat in what is becoming a regular occurrence for this team. Josh Ransley got the call up and really showed his capabilities by snaring four wickets.

New Norfolk I got back on the winners, easily accounting for Bushy Park by nine wickets. After missing last week's match, Red Cap all-rounder Stewart Rice firstly ripped through the Bushy Park batsmen taking 5-23 and then opened the batting with his eldest son Mitchell. The pair put on an opening stand of 81, with Stewart making 59 with 46 coming in boundaries and Mitchell remained 23 not out with three 4s. Richard Graham remained 32no. For Bushy, Mitch Crosswell did well making 33 while Nathan Grant was the only wicket taker. Well done to 13-year-old Cody Morgan on playing his first senior match for the club. He also plays with the Under 13s and is doing very well.

In his 50th match for Gretna II, stand-in captain Adam Browning led his team to victory, bowling extremely well and skittling through the Marquis batsmen to finish with figures of 6-18 off 10 overs. The Tigers were bowled out for 79 in 34 overs. Browning was well supported by Brock Nichols who did a great job keeping the pressure on at the other end as did Matthew and Cody Eyles. In reply Gretna had no trouble reaching the small total with openers Bruce Emery 32no and Dylan Pearce 25no getting the job done with no fuss.

In second grade, Gretna I recorded a three-wicket win over Montagu Bay at Gretna on Saturday. Montagu Bay had first hit and was bowled out for 183. This was thanks to a good bowling spell from debutant Daniel Browning who took 4 for 50 off 10 overs. Spinner Craig Cunningham continues to pick up wickets each week, bagging two this time. In reply Gretna reached the visitors' total with 20.2 overs to spare. In his 200th for Gretna I, Ben Rainbird came in down the order and made a very good 50no while Mathew Burns made 39.

NEW Norfolk Under 13s had a good win over New Town Jatan with Nathan Rice taking two wickets and Lucas Higgins making 21 not out.

Molesworth Under 13s had a very good win over New Town Lee, bowling them out for just nine runs. Tyron Bailey made 13no and Jeremy Nicholls 14.

In a high scoring match, Gretna Under 13s went down to Wellington by 17 runs at Glenora. Josh Eyles did well making 30no as did Tyler Farrell who remained 14no.

Gretna Under 15s travelled to Dodges Ferry where they had a good win over the home side by 30 runs. Hannah Mann made 15 while speedster Nathan Eyles captured 5 for 18 off 7 overs. Nathan claimed all his five wickets off his last three overs for just seven runs.

The Molesworth Under 15 results were not available at the time of writing.

Total fire ban from midnight

TOTAL FIRE BAN DECLARED FOR SOUTHERN TASMANIA

December 19, 2013

Due to locally warmer weather conditions throughout today and forecast hot weather for tomorrow, TFS Chief Officer Mike Brown has declared a Total Fire Ban for the south of the state from midnight tonight until midnight on Thursday, December 19.

Mr Brown said: “Given the predicted weather conditions for tomorrow we expect that any fire outbreak in the south of Tasmania could be difficult to control. With the dry conditions developing in many areas, all Tasmanians are also asked to take extra care with machinery that emits sparks, such as mowers, slashers, grinders and other cutting tools, as this type of activity does has the potential to start fires.”

The Tasmania Fire Service is asking that anyone who may have lit a fire in the past week or so to ensure any fire is completely extinguished. “There are significant penalties that can be imposed on anyone not adhering to the Total Fire Ban restrictions,” Mr Brown added.

People should monitor the local ABC radio station or visit TFS website to keep up to date with conditions.

The Tasmania Fire Service urges everyone living in and around the bush to review their Bushfire Survival Plan now and be prepared to implement their plan if required. Details on how to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan, prepare your property for bushfires, or other fire safety tips can be found from the front page of the TFS website.

While the ban is in place please avoid non-essential water use. Turning off sprinkler systems and using hoses sparingly will help ensure that water is available for firefighting and protecting properties should it be required.

All fires should be reported by dialling "000".

Nothing to fear - it's a burnoff

A CONTROLLED burn near Corumbene Nursing Home has cast a cloud of smoke across New Norfolk tonight.

The New Norfolk Fire Brigade appears to be managing the burnoff, which is occurring on the bank below the nursing home, between Lower Rd and Hobart Rd.

THE still-unfinished "sound shell" at Tynwald Park was the venue for the Derwent Valley Carols by Candlelight last Friday. A tarpaulin was strung up behind the stage to provide temporary acoustic support for the evening.

Moved from their traditional Monday night fixture for the first time since the event started in the mid-1980s, the carols were attended by about 250 people who braved cool conditions for a night of family entertainment.

PERHAPS the biggest crowd yet turned out to watch the New Norfolk Christmas Parade earlier today. Held in cool and overcast conditions, the annual pageant had about 30 entries and each run of High St took about 20 minutes.

Organised for the first time by the Lions Club of New Norfolk and the Derwent Valley Rotary Club for the New Norfolk Business Alliance, the event concluded with Santa Claus riding along High St in the front part of the Lions Club train.

Candidate shows interest

Jessey Dillon

RECENTLY announced ALP candidate for Lyons in next year's State Election, New Norfolk's Jessey Dillon, was the only member of the public in the gallery at last night's Derwent Valley Council annual general meeting.

Speaking during the community section of the meeting, Mr Dillon congratulated the councillors on their work for the municipality over the past year and encouraged them to maintain their efforts in the new year.

The only other person in the gallery was West Tamar mayor Barry Easther OAM, in his capacity as president of the Local Government Association of Tasmania, having arrived a little early for the 5.30pm function to celebrate the council's 150th birthday.

The pride of New Norfolk

Kathy Foster being inducted into the hall of fame.

FRIENDS and family from New Norfolk joined our town's first Olympian, Kathy Foster, in Melbourne late last month when she became the first Tasmanian to be inducted to the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.

Kathy's special guests were her husband Phil and daughter Rachael, mum Nita Davey and sister Lynne Hanlon, as well as lifelong friends John and Vanessa Hastie and Kim and Leeanne Clark. Phil and Kathy's younger daughter, Rebecca, was in England and unable to attend.

In a Women's National Basketball League career spanning 135 games, the three time Most Valuable Player (1985, 1986, 1989) was also a member of the 1989 and 1990 WNBL All Star Five.

At the international level, Kathy represented Australia at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and two World Championships (1983 and 1986). Her crowning moment came in 1991 when she played a significant role in bringing a WNBL title to Hobart with the Islanders’ victory over the Nunawading Spectres.

After hanging up her sneakers at the end of 1992, Kathy has remained involved via coaching positions at all levels with a particular focus on her students at The Fahan School in Sandy Bay where she is deputy principal. A GREAT spell of bowling by Mitch Crosswell helped Bushy Park to its second victory in a row with a great win over Runnymede on Saturday. Bushy had first hit, making the the defendable score of 141. Wicketkeeper-batsman Geoff Crosswell did well making 59, well supported by Troy Smith who made 24. In reply the visitors couldn't handle the bowling of speedster Mitch Crosswell who sent down 9.4 overs and captured 6 for 22. Crosswell has been a very good bowler for the Park over many years now and this match winning effort was no exception. Crosswell was well supported by Nathan Grant who captured three wickets himself. In the end Runnymede was bowled out for just 57. Bushy Park heads into this weekend's match against New Norfolk in some good form and could well inflict the Red Caps with their second loss.

In Fifth Grade it was an excellent innings for Molesworth II's opener of 105 but youngster Cody Needs couldn't quite get his team over the line against Montagu Bay on Sunday. Needs batted superbly, hitting 11 fours and three sixes in a great effort. In his comeback match Dean King was next best with 29 - most of this coming off boundaries. For the Molesworth bowlers it was Jye County who did the damage, taking four wickets while King and Hodge chipped in with two each. It was a great effort from Molesworth who lost by only 25 runs.

New Norfolk II had the bye.

After seven wins in a row, New Norfolk I lost its first roster match. The Red Caps were outplayed by their Second Grade opponents Montagu Bay which had first hit, making 8 for 217 off 50 overs. In reply New Norfolk was bowled out for 136. Captain Rohan Heron tried hard for his team, top-scoring with 31 while Josh Dykes was the main wicket-taker with 2-24. This weekend the Red Caps will face the Bushy Park outfit which has won the past two matches. This match could be an interesting affair.

Gretna II travelled to Shoobridge Park were they took on ladder-leaders DOSA. The home side won the toss and sent Gretna into bat for a great score of 9 for 245 off the 50 overs. Matthew Eyles found the boundaries often, top-scoring with a well-made 48. Jordan Hastie also showed great form making 45 while Brian Smith made 28 before being caught brilliantly. In reply DOSA chased down the total with ease, reaching it off just 30 overs. All Gretna bowlers tried hard, but the DOSA batsmen were a polished outfit, hitting boundaries in nearly every over. Gretna II has now lost its last two matches and with captain Joey Eyles still out injured, the team must regroup for its next big match against the Marquis Tigers at Gretna.

Gretna I got back on the winners list with a four-wicket won over Derwent at home on Saturday. Derwent had first hit and was bowled out for 169. Six Gretna bowlers took wickets with Ben Rainbird and Jackson Ackerly taking two each to be the best of the bowlers. In reply Gretna reached the total with plenty of overs to spare with Mathew Burns doing well making 44 and Aaron Maddox doing well down the order with 30.

The Molesworth I v Sandford match was washed out, apparently due to the rain the night before.

DECKED out in their bright uniforms, the keen Glenora in2Cricket participants had their final session last Friday evening at the Gretna Cricket Club. The future cricket stars aged from 5 to 8 years enjoyed the past seven weeks learning the great game of cricket.

Supported by co-ordinators Annie McKenzie and Natasha Farrow along with Gretna senior players and parents, the kids have been well looked after. Both Annie and Natasha were presented with plaques from the Gretna Cricket Club in appreciation of their excellent work with the Milo in2Cricket program over the past four years. Well done ladies. And to all the kids, we hope to see you back again next season.

Christmas parade details

THIS year's Christmas Parade will be held Saturday 14th December commencing at noon in Circle St, New Norfolk. We have 31 entries in the parade which possibly may make it the biggest one yet.

The route will follow Circle St to High St, proceeding around Arthur Square and returning up High St. We have two pipe bands and the Derwent Valley Concert Band participating.

This year's parade has been organised by the Rotary and Lions Clubs of New Norfolk, funded by the New Norfolk Business Alliance and assistance given by the SES and Tyga FM.

Tyga FM will be broadcasting live on the day, the Lions Club will conduct a BBQ outside the Post Office after the event and prizes will be awarded by MC Craig Farrell also after the event. Santa will be in attendance outside the Post Office after the parade.

Concert band's big year

THE Derwent Valley Concert Band's 20th anniversary had been a year to remember, president and music director Layton Hodgetts told last night's annual general meeting in the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall.

The meeting conferred a long-overdue and well-deserved life membership of the band on Mr Hodgetts and heard that the Belle Pearson Award for Consistent Endeavour had been awarded to Susan Reppion-Brook.

The election of office-bearers saw Mr Hodgetts returned as president for the next year. Recently returned founding member Doug Boote was elected vice-president, Antony Cave as secretary and Ashleigh Clark was returned as treasurer. Elected to the committee were Leeanne Clark, Amanda James, Tara Johns, Anne Gourlay and Nick Bennett.

To celebrate the band's 20th anniversary, certificates of service were presented to all members of the band and special mention was made of the band's patron, Belle Pearson, and journalist Damian Bester for their ongoing support since the band was established in 1993.

Colonial heritage demolished

The Willow Court Oval change-rooms site this evening

THE heritage-listed colonial basement of the destroyed football change rooms at Willow Court was demolished today.

Contractors moved in early this morning to remove the roof and other remains of the weatherboard change rooms, which were razed in a deliberately-lit fire on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the intervention of passers-by who were concerned about the apparently unnecessary demolition of the basement level, the structure was levelled after a temporary halt, and most of the brick and sandstone was removed. Only a few pieces of hand-hewn stone remained this evening.

The Willow Court Conservation and Management Plan said the change-rooms building must be preserved but could be relocated. It is believed that the change-rooms were cut off from the part of the property sold by the Derwent Valley Council to a supermarket developer.

IN a great all-round effort the Gretna Under 15s had a good win over the undefeated Sorell team yesterday. Gretna won in a close one by 11 runs.

In the Under 13s, New Norfolk just went down to North Hobart. Young Cody Morgan had a good game, making 30 retired and picking up one wicket.

The young Gretna Under 13s have started to really meld together now and a win is just around the corner. The pleasing thing is the kids have been batting out their overs with many batsmen remaining not out. Well done boys.

Council AGM this Thursday

THE Derwent Valley Council's annual general meeting will be held this Thursday, December 12, in the New Norfolk Courthouse at 5pm. The annual report can be downloaded from the council website here, or obtained in hardcopy from the council chambers.

The AGM is an opportunity to ask questions about the council's activities over the last financial year and to propose motions from the floor. If carried by the members of the public present, these motions must be considered at the next council meeting.

Police interview three youths over fire

APPREHENSIONS MADE IN RELATION TO ARSON
AT  NEW NORFOLK 7 DECEMBER 2013

At 3.30pm on Saturday 7 December 2013, the Tasmania Fire Service and Police personnel were called to attend a structure fire at Royal Derwent, George Street, New Norfolk. The disused "football change rooms" were fully engulfed in flames and were completely destroyed by fire causing approximately $100,000 damage.  A fire scene examination determined that the cause of the fire was suspicious and it had been deliberately lit.

As a result of investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Branch and the quality information provided by the local community, the identities of the three people responsible for the arson were quickly established.

Late Saturday night, investigators interviewed three youths in relation to the arson and all three will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Investigators are very appreciative of the information and quick actions of those members of the local New Norfolk community; with the information they provided directly leading to the timely resolution of this incident.

Markets wanted for music muster

STALLHOLDERS are being sought for a market associated with a country music muster at New Norfolk early next year.

The music festival will be held at Boyer Oval on February 8, supported by the Derwent Valley Council, Lions Club of New Norfolk, New Norfolk District Football Club, Molesworth Cricket Club and Tyga FM. Tickets sales and more information is available at www.centertainment.com.au.

Market stalls will be assembled on the grassed area just down from the main gates and will operate from 10am-3pm. Expressions of interest are being sought from potential stall operators. There are some exclusions, including food products, drinks, condiments and home-made foodstuffs, fruit, vegetables, eggs or any home produce, and dangerous goods or weapons.

Learn all about karamu tomorrow

IF you live on or near the Derwent River in New Norfolk you may be familiar with the introduced woody weed called karamu. It is fast taking over the riverbank and wetlands in and around the town.

Steven Joyce from NRM South says widespread participation is the only way control this weed and clean up the waterway. To help tackle this weed, a free workshop involving plant identification and the demonstration of effective control methods will be held tomorrow (Sunday) followed by a lunchtime barbecue.

New Norfolk history in miniature

A NINETY-year-old cigarette card featuring a railcar near the Derbyshire Rocks is the latest piece of New Norfolk memorabilia to be offered in an online auction.

The card is number 93 in a series of 100 published in 1925 by cigarette manufacturer W.D. and H.O. Wills. Cigarette cards were collectable items used to stiffen soft packs of cigarettes and to advertise particular brands.

Wills' "Australian Scenic Series" featured images from around the country, including a view of Russell Falls among the half-dozen Tasmanian pictures. The cards measure about 6.9cm x 5.3cm.

Southern cricket - week seven

A GREAT all-round effort from Jamie Maddox guided New Norfolk I to yet another victory in the Southern Cricket Association last weekend. Maddox had a real day out, scoring 83 and then taking 6 for 15 in what ended up as another big win for the Red Caps. Maddox came in to bat when the score was 6 for 118. He put on 82 with coach Adrian Eiszele adding 21. New Norfolk finished 9 for 231 with Ashley Morgan also doing and well making 38. New Norfolk went about dismantling Derwent, bundling them out for just 82. The excellent spell of bowling from Maddox was the main factor in Derwent's small total.

The Ben Eyles Memorial match between Molesworth I and Gretna I at Boyer Oval on Saturyda saw Molesworth back on the winners list, downing Gretna by three wickets. Gretna had first hit, making the small total of 148 with Craig Cunningham top-scoring with 34. Man of the match Nathan Eiszele bowled very well for Molesworth and finished with fine figures of 5-26 off 10 overs. In reply Molesworth lost seven wickets in the run chase with two overs to spare. Mathew Smith contributed a well made 65 and Josh Bomford was next best with 30. At the end of the match, members of the Eyles family presented Molesworth captain Brad Coppleman with the Ben Eyles Memorial Trophy and the the man of the match award to Nathan Eiszele. Molesworth has now won the memorial trophy both times since it started last season.

Bushy Park recored its first win of the season with a big eight-wicket win over the MacKillop Beltas at Bushy Park. Mitchell Crosswell top-scored with 51 and Danny Mason also did well with 34. Captain Troy Smith bowled very well taking 4 for 35 as did Mitch Crosswell who capped off a great day finishing with fine figures of 3 for 13 off 10 overs.

In fourth grade, Gretna II lost its first match for the season, going down to lower-placed Dynnyrne by two wickets. Gretna II made 4 for 259 off its 50 overs with captain Joey Eyles making a excellent 95 not out and opener Nick Wakefield also did well making 62. This wasn't enough however, with Dynnyrne reaching the total with 4.1 overs to spare. Adam Browning and Brock Nichols were the main wicket takers with two each. Dropped catches didn't help Gretna's cause.

In fifth grade Molesworth II had a good win over MacRobies Gully by 51 runs. Youngster Jye County made a superb 85 in an innings that included 11-4s and 2-6s. Well done Jye. For the bowling for Molesworth, Aaron Triffitt continues to impress, taking 4-28. The young brigade in the side have really stepped up to the plate this season, paving the way for many more wins.

In the other fifth grade match New Norfolk lost to Dynnyrne by six wickets. Only one batsman for New Notfolk was able to reach double figures - young Mitchell Rice who is showing signs of becoming a good cricketer and making 44. Adam Nossiter tried hard to keep the red caps in it, and finished with three wickets.
