COVID-19 ADVICE: The following links provide official advice and information about the virus known as COVID-19.
Australia's state and federal governments are taking action to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Use the links above to source the latest advice about what you can do to protect yourself and others. Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

Summer fun at Mt Field

THE annual Discovery Ranger Summer Program starts at many national parks this week, including Mt Field National Park in the Derwent Valley. A Discovery Ranger will offer free fun and educational activities at the following times:

Friday December 27

  • 11am - Meet the Ranger (Discovery Table). Meet Discovery Ranger Ben any time between 11am and 12.30pm at the big tree stump on the Russell Falls walking track to discover amazing and exciting things about the creatures that live in the forest. Bring your questions.
  • 3pm - Kids Capers (1 hr). Learn about the amazing wildlife of Tasmania through fun games and activities. For kids and adults of all ages! Children under 12 please bring a grown up. Meet Discovery Ranger Ben at the Visitor Centre.


Saturday December 28

  • 2pm - Terrific Trees (1 hr). Discover the tallest flowering plants in the world and learn some fascinating facts about trees! Great for kids of all ages! Meet Discovery Ranger Ben at the Visitor
  • Centre.
  • 7.30pm - Platypus Prowl (1.5 hrs). Find out about this unusual and unique animal and learn to spot them in the wild! Bookings are essential. Book at the visitor centre before 4.30pm.


Sunday December 29

  • 11am - Tall Trees Walk (1.5 hrs). Meet Discovery Ranger Ben at the Tall Trees car park (5 mins drive up the road from the Visitor Centre) for a guided walk through an impressive stand of towering swamp gums (Eucalyptus regnans), the tallest flowering plant on Earth.
  • 2pm - Bug Detective (1.5 hrs).
  • Become a bug detective and help the ranger catch and identify the amazing critters that live in streams at Mt Field. Be prepared to get a little wet! Meet Discovery Ranger Ben at the Visitor's Centre.

Monday December 30
  • 11am - Meet the Ranger (Discovery Table). Meet Discovery Ranger Ben any time between 11am and 12.30pm at the big tree stump on the Russell Falls walking track to discover amazing and exciting things about the creatures that live in the forest. Bring your questions.
  • 8.45pm - Creatures of the Night (1.5 hrs). Learn all about Tasmania's unique and wonderful wildlife and how to find our nocturnal friends, on a spotlight walk with the Ranger. Bring warm clothing and a torch if you have one. Bookings are essential. Book at the visitor centre before 4.30pm.

Tuesday December 31
  • 2pm - Kids Capers (1.5 hrs). Learn about the amazing wildlife of Tasmania through fun games and activities. For kids and adults of all ages! Children under 12 please bring a grown up. Meet Discovery Ranger Ben at the Visitor Centre.
  • 7.30pm - New Years Eve Quiz (1.5 hrs). Test your knowledge of Tasmania's wonders and team up for a quiz. Native animal calls, seat and skull identifications and general knowledge might come in handy! Meet at the Visitor Centre.
The program continues until January 5. Bring sunscreen, sturdy shoes and a hat for all daytime activities. Programmed activities may change in adverse weather. An adult must accompany children under 12. For more information contact Discovery Ranger Ben on 0428 407 598.
