Reader's letter: a wonky Woolies?

I HAVE observed that the new Woolworth’s building currently being constructed in New Norfolk is being constructed wrongly. Either that, or the drawings of it on display on the wall of the council chambers are wrong. I say this because according to the drawings, there are no window openings in the rear wall sections (Elevation C) that have already been installed, yet there are some in the side wall section (Elevation D) next to the already existing street. Yet on the already installed sections, currently the opposite apply. There are window openings in Elevation C and none in Elevation D. Why? Who stuffed up?

Learn-to-swim looks lost

THE owner of the business known as "New Norfolk's Best Learn to Swim" has announced that the service will not be operating this summer. Marcus Parschau last week published a Facebook post saying he had not been able to reach a suitable agreement with the New Norfolk Olympic Pool.

"Since 2012 I had a great time, met some great people and achieved and learned so much," Mr Parschau said. "I hope I was able to make a little difference and the kids of the Derwent Valley a bit safer in and around water. Please let other friends and people who are not on Facebook know about my decision. All the best. Marcus."

Last weekends of soccer coming up

THE New Norfolk Soccer Club is going to be very busy over the next two weekends. Tomorrow (August 30) is the NNSC/Northern Suburbs Junior Soccer Association Gala Day and everyone is invited to come along to watch the juniors play their last games of the season.

The following Saturday (September 6), is the New Norfolk Soccer Club Trophy Day at the rotunda at Tynwald Park, starting at 11am.


Under 6 Red played a great game against Holy Rosary last weekend, ending with a draw. Well done and great teamwork.

Under 6 Black was defeated by Metro, 3-2. Goal kickers were Hemi and Zach, while Shaun, Vincent, Lewis, Lucas and James all played well.  Well done boys.

Under 7 Red had a great game at home against Holy Rosary, scoring a massive nine goals in a fantastic team effort.

Under 7 Black played Holy Rosary and it was another great game by the whole team. Well done to Tristan Nicholson on playing two games on the day as he filled in for his brother’s team. With only one game to go, our team has improved out of sight this season. Well done guys!

Under 8 Red was too strong for Metro on a beautiful morning for soccer at Metro's home ground. It was a whole team effort with the boys once again showing some great skills with excellent passing. J'Khobi with two goals and Jack with one showed great footwork and speed. Declan kicked a goal almost from the centre and Tristan scored a great goal over the goalie's head. Nayte and Hamish tried hard all game in defence and attack. Our goalie for the day was Jacob and he did a fantastic job, saving a lot of goals. Thanks to Tristan for helping us out. Well done team.

Under 8 Black played a fantastic game against a strong Glenorchy Knights team, with great goal work from Joshua and Caylin, and a fantastic goal from Caitlin. Thank you to Caylin and Jack for subbing, with Jack already playing a game at Metro. There was great defence work from Jess with support from Jacob, Astrid, Mia and Mikayla playing all over the ground. Well done guys, we are so proud of the way the whole team has improved.

Under 9 had a bye.

Under 10 played an amazing game against Glenorchy Knights with the final score being 4-1 in our favour. Our goalies Alex Mc and Luke were kept extremely busy and were fantastic with all their saves. Brock, Alex G and Alex B were kept very busy in defence and were a great support to our goalies. Kiara, Maddy and Aidan ran hard all game through the middle and were a great support to Jacob who scored two goals, and Ostyn and Freya who scored a goal each. The sportsmanship was outstanding and the enthusiasm and encouragement towards team mates is something to be very proud of. Well done to Jason and Dallas on coaching and umpiring.

Under 11 defeated Bagdad 9-0 at Bagdad. Goal-scorers Jed, Levi and Brayden kicked three each. Great work by goalies Ella and Dylan and well done to Jacob, Blake, Lane, Montanna and Lucy for helping Bagdad with its undermanned side. Zoe and Josh played another great game.

Under 14 played a great game against Uni, who are second on the ladder, with a 3-all draw. Our goals were kicked by Braydan Wilson, Sam Plunkett-Smith and Ryan Browning. New Norfolk played a fierce game with many of our players showing great skills. Stand-out players in this game were Sam and Jack Rose. The players throughout the season have greatly improved on their footwork and skill level and have been a joy to watch, with a great team effort during the year. Well done.

Under 16 was defeated by Glenorchy Knights 10-2. Josh Calahan scored a goal in the early minutes of the first half and Jordan  Bailey was able to convert a penalty in the second half. A great game played well by all the boys.

Seniors - It was the last home game of the season for the Division 4 team, with the Peninsula Pirates making the trip up to Tynwald Park from Nubeena. The start of the match showed just how much both sides have improved this year as both defences stood strong. Eventually Ollie Chaplin put New Norfolk in front from a ball that just wouldn't go in the net until he got a boot to it. The Pirates then showed that despite being on the bottom of the table they had some good skills and managed to kick two fairly quick goals to go into half time 2-1 up. The second half saw a much more focused Panthers side and it didn't take long for a fresh-legged Colin Banks to make an impact and shortly after kicked a great goal to level the scores. Both teams had a number of opportunities that went begging but then Bob Tolputt put in a cross that found Luke Slater in the goal box and he slotted it into the back of the net. Many more chances came and went but New Norfolk came out victors with a 3-2 win. The final game for the season is away against Metro at Chigwell on Sunday at 2.30pm. Come along and support the team

Under 6 Red played a great game against Moonah. The result was a loss but Jake and Anna showed some great teamwork and Ruby and Tyler were great in goals.

Under 6 Black defeated an undermanned Brighton Black side. There was good sportsmanship from James, Vincent, Lucas and Zac, while Hemi and Vincent scored a goal each and Shaun and Lewis played well.

Under 7 Red had a great game against Bagdad. Special mentions go to Anothony, Brady, Tristan and Lily for all playing a half a game for an undermanned Bagdad.  Brady scored a goal for Bagdad. New Norfolk's goals were scored by Liam, Anthony and Joel.

Under 7 Black played Brighton Yellow at Tynwald Park for another great game. It was an outstanding effort by the whole team, with a special mention to Rodney Browning on a great goal. Well done team!

Under 8 Red played a hard game against a very good team. With J’Khobi going off injured for a  period, it left New Norfolk short for about 10 minutes. He then returned to the ground and finished the game strongly. Thanks to Joshua for subbing.  Hamish, Jacob White, Nayte, Declan and Jacob Priest all tried very hard.

Under 8 Black played a fantastic game against Dominic. Congratulations to Jacob for scoring so many great goals. All played well with and with the team being two players short they were excited but tired! There was great goal-keeping by Joshua and Mikayla while Mia and Jess worked hard. Well done.

Under 9 played a skilled Glenorchy Knights who kept New Norfolk scoreless. Luke Pelham played his best game ever and there were some great saves in goals by Oliver Coulson and Maiken Lee.  Great teamwork was displayed by Abby Beven, Cruez Harwood, Jennifer Pearce, Oliver Coulson and Caleb Linell. Well done guys, you all gave it your best.

Under 10 had a good win against Derwent United, 10-1.  Goal scorers were Jacob 4, Luke 2, Aidan 2, Maddy 1 and a massive kick from the half line into the goal square by Ostyn was helped over the line by Brock for a great joint goal.  Goalkeepers were Alec McM and Luke.  Alex G, Kiara and Alex B were very unlucky not to score a goal each with their kicks going either side of the goal posts.  Great sharing of the ball and encouraging your team mates.  Well done team.

Under 11 defeated Dominic 5-4 at Dominic. It was an impressive game throughout, with a special mention to Dylan for his goalie efforts. Goal scorers were Jed 4 and Levi.  Apologies to Ella for not reporting her goal in the previous week's game always plays an exceptional game.

Under 16 played its best team game, losing only by one goal to Huonville, 3-2.  The team worked hard all game, pushing forward continuously and eventually Josh Calahan slotted a goal. Josh Russell also managed to convert.  A fantastic effort from all the team.

Seniors Division 4 played a tight game at Olinda Grove against Uni.  Uni opened the scoring early but Ollie Chaplin evened things up quickly. Both teams scored again soon after that, with Luke Slater using his height to head a ball in and Colin Banks managed to put the Panthers up 3-2 just before half time. Thomas Sheppard opened up the scoring for the second half with a ball from the 18m box that deflected off a defender and hit the back of the net.  The game slowed in the second half but Uni managed to slot in two more goals to give New Norfolk its first draw for the year. Once again the team showed it can play some good football even when facing the higher ranked teams.

FRESH from a week’s rest, New Norfolk would probably have been preparing itself for a big clash against Claremont but will instead be taking on Lindisfarne. The Two Blues gave a dominant display last weekend with a powerful running game which should now test the Eagles on the wide open spaces of the Boyer Oval.

New Norfolk will be fresh from the break and should be well and truly rested following its hard hit-out in the last week of the season against Dodges Ferry. Lindisfarne showed its class last weekend. Despite being four goals behind at half time, they powered home in the second half and this will give them some much needed confidence and momentum as they take on the best side in the competition.

New Norfolk has many players with lots of finals experience and these players will know how to get themselves fired up and know what is expected in this tough clash. Their example to their younger players who have come up this season should see them well and truly set for this big clash. As well as having dominant players all over the ground, the Eagles' powerful forward line of Thompson, Hall and Wilson, plus their smaller powerhouses, means the Two Blues will have to kick a good score if they are to defeat the high scoring New Norfolk.

Lindisfarne coach Adrian Goodwin knows the New Norfolk side inside out and will certainly take out a different game plan in this affair. An obvious strategy will be to try to chip the ball around and keep it wide in an attempt to starve the Eagles of possession.  The Two Blues need to structure their defence and play accountable football. They also need to release a sweeper across the half-back line in an attempt to spoil some of the Eagles' key forwards.

The centre clearances is where the game will be decided because both sides have classy players all over the ground. Whoever can get the ball from the centre clearances and win the stoppages will have a strong advantage in the game.

Lindisfarne needs to get off to a good start and put some early score board pressure on its more fancied rivals. New Norfolk knows what is required to win the big ones and would appear to have too much firepower up forward and should be too strong for Lindisfarne. It will however be interesting to see how close the Two Blues can get to New Norfolk. On last weekend's form they are chance to cause another huge upset.

THE highly-fancied Claremont is at home for the second week in a row, recovering from a shock loss last weekend.  You would expect the Magpies to come out firing and they should be too strong for Dodges Ferry, but if the Sharks can stay with them for most of the day the finals pressure could really tell on the Magpies and their season could end with two defeats.

Scouts in action against bullying

ANNUAL "Scouts in Action" month has been running throughout August and the topic for this year is "Breaking the Cycle – Bullying is not a part of Scouting."

New Norfolk Scouts have recently completed a series of bullying awareness activities, including a visit by guest speaker Cassie Whitehill from Chloe's Law. "Many scouts were inspired by Cassie's talk and are eager to take what they have learnt and spread awareness within their schools and amongst their peers," scout leader Jo-anne Pursell said.

Some scouts are hoping to have the "Say No To Bullying Day" observed in their schools on September 12 to raise money and to help create awareness.

Telstra's in town

TASMANIA is the first stop for Telstra's new "check-in" bus and mobile shop that has set out on a nationwide tour. New Norfolk is the second destination, behind Huonville. The vehicle will be in town tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10am-3pm, complete with technicians and customer service representatives.

“I hope tours like this will fill the gap for people who can’t have their problems and questions solved over the phone and internet,” Telstra Countrywide Tasmanian general manager Michael Patterson said. As well as offering local technical advice and tackling any issues customers might be experiencing, Telstra will donate $1 for each customer we speak with to Tasmanian youth charity Whitelion.

More work on the Bridgewater Bridge

ONE lane of the Bridgewater Bridge will be temporarily closed to allow maintenance works to be undertaken tomorrow and Thursday. Maintenance works on the bridge "stop lights" will take place between 10am and 2.30pm.

"Motorists are reminded to slow down, take care and obey all instructions from traffic management," said the general manager of Transport Infrastructure Services, Shane Gregory.

Green Army to tackle walking track improvements

TWO walking tracks in New Norfolk will be upgraded in the first round of the Federal Government's Green Army program. The Derwent Valley Council and Conservation Volunteers Australia will be funded to control weeds and improve the walking tracks along the River Derwent. They will also be involved in gravel and track surfacing and erosion control measures.

To be carried out in the second half of  2015, the project will revitalise the Derwent Cliffs Walk and the Millbrook Rise end of the Bicentennial Walking Track. Green Army participants will undertake weed and erosion control and walking track upgrades to protect remnant vegetation. This will ensure sensitive wetland areas are maintained and can continue to provide habitat for native bird species and platypus. Historic flour mill ruins at Tynwald House will be more visible due to weed removal and control.

The project will start at the entrance to New Norfolk at the Millbrook Rise boat ramp, continuing through bush and wetlands areas along the River Derwent following the existing walking track. It will then follow the cliff-top walk and descend the steps to the base of the cliffs. The entire area is under threat from numerous weeds including boneseed, broom, blackberries and karamu and there has been significant erosion to the Lachlan Rivulet area of the track caused by the build-up of willow and debris that will be removed.

Activities will include weed treatment, erosion control, debris removal and possible fencing and path widening activities. Track safety will be improved, remnant vegetation will have fewer weeds to contend with, and environmentally sensitive areas will be improved by weed removal. Visibility of the heritage listed area will be increased and erosion controlled. Participants will gain skills in workplace health and safety and the handling of chemicals as well as weed identification and eradication, track work, construction work and fencing. They will also gain basic computer skills.

SECOND-PLACED Claremont will get the all-important home ground advantage with a chance to take on New Norfolk in next week’s second semi-final when they host the improving Lindisfarne in what should be a very entertaining and close contest.

Claremont were easy winters last week against lowly Sorell and they will need to play a lot better in this crucial contest. The Magpies lost one game all season, but tomorrow should be one of their toughest challenges of the year as the Two Blues have really played some great football the last three weeks and will be looking to cause a huge upset.

The Pies have been really solid in defence in recent weeks and this is where they tend to really strangle sides and frustrate their scoring opportunities. This is what they will be looking to do to Lindisfarne’s key forwards who have been in good form in recent weeks.

The Two Blues recorded a great win at home last weekend against Brighton and will be looking to frustrate their more fancied rivals into making mistakes and really work hard to lock the ball in their forward half, but this will be a difficult task on the wide open spaces of Abbotsfield Park.

Claremont has a dangerous forward line and players like Gillie and Hunt are capable of kicking multiple goals. The Two Blues will need to make sure they have their match ups spot on and not allow these players any space to lead into.

The game will be decided in the centre clearances and the Magpies have a wealth of experience in this area. Their strength around the contest with their bigger-bodied players should be crucial in the deciding game. Claremont has been one of the dominant sides all season and with a home ground advantage you would expect the Pies to be too strong but they will need to be at their best as Lindisfarne is playing its best football at the right time of the season.

East Coast v Dodges Ferry
THE East Coast Bombers have the home ground advantage when they take on fifth-placed Dodges Ferry in what would appear to be a very close contest. Both sides look fairly well matched through the midfield and the side that can score early in the game should be able to put a bit of scoreboard pressure on their rivals which is crucial in elimination finals.

In a game that should be close for most of the day, the Bombers could have too much scoring ability and if they can break even in the midfield they should be able to generate enough scoring opportunities to win the game. However, a win by the Sharks would not surprise as their best football is good to match up with most sides.

Body found in the river at Boyer

Police are currently attending an incident at New Norfolk.

The body of a deceased man was found in the water near the Norske Skog jetty.

Initial indications are that the incident is not suspicious.

Police were called to the incident shortly before 11am.

Lyell Highway crash

ABC Radio has reported on Twitter that police are attending a crash involving a motorcycle and a car on the Lyell Highway, near Granton about 3km west of the Bridgewater Bridge. 

A second message says there are no obvious life threatening injuries but warns of traffic disruptions and advises motorists to avoid the area.

Boyer Rd or Molesworth/Glenlusk Rds may be a better option for commuters at present.

New Norfolk for dummies?

A TRIP to New Norfolk by river ferry is one of the elements of a new $9 million marketing campaign launched this week as part of Tourism Tasmania's "Go Behind the Scenery" initiative.

It features a curious video clip presented by a ventriloquist's dummy which travels from Hobart by water taxi and goes on to visit a number of points of interest including St Matthew's Church and the barracks at Willow Court, plus a number of antique shops.

The character describes himself as a local but has an unusual pronunciation of New Norfolk and repeatedly describes Tasmania's third-biggest town as as a "little village". The two-minute clip ends with the host falling in love with a female puppet in one of the antique shops.

The new campaign is receiving a mixed reaction on social media. See the clip for yourself here.

Council seeking director for children's service

THE Derwent Valley Council is seeking a new director of children's services following the recently announced retirement of the founder of the service, Carol Volant.

An advertisement published online says the successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day management and organisation of the council's child care centre (Valley Children's Centre) and family day care service.

Statewide radio broadcast from Maydena

ABC Radio will present its statewide afternoon program from Maydena tomorrow (Wednesday). Presenter Penny Terry will broadcast live from the Maydena RSL Club from 2-4pm.

Penny and the Your Afternoon team regularly take the program into communities to find out more about the people and the places. Today they were at Sorell.

For the Maydena broadcast Penny will meet, among others, Debbie Raspin, the RSL's licencee and treasurer; Dulcie Donahue, who has lived in Maydena for 70 years; and tourisim operator Derek Whitwell.

NEW Norfolk sewed up top position on the ladder with percentage and were never going to let Dodges Ferry into the game on Saturday. The Eagles as they showed their class in a great tune up for the finals series, defeating an extremely disappointing Dodges Ferry by 126 points.

New Norfolk hit the ground full of running and played all over its opponents. Despite missing several easy shots at goal the Eagles were still able to move to a 35 point lead at quarter time and looked in total control.

The Eagles continued their dominance in the second term, allowing Dodges Ferry to only kick two goals to half time as they showed the difference between the top side and their fifth-placed opponent, racing away to at 80-point lead at the main break.

The second half was similar style of play as the Sharks could not penetrate any scoring opportunity as New Norfolk’s defence was rock solid. While they dropped off in the last term the Eagles still celebrated a great tune up for their finals campaign.

New Norfolk had a lot of good players but Josh Hall was again outstanding with 10 goals to reach the magical 100 goals for the season in a great year. Hall will be a key player in New Norfolk’s finals campaign. Other good players for the Eagles were Horne, Clayton who finished with three goals, Booth and Heron in an even team performance.

Best players for the Sharks were hard to find however captain Curran, Scott and Sutton were their best and they will need a lot of improvement if they are to win their first final this weekend.

CLAREMONT took on the lowly-placed Sorell and should have won by a lot more than 82 points. Coach Excell will be disappointed with this tune up for the finals as the Magpies have a much tougher contest at home this weekend against Lindisfarne. Sorell's season ends with four wins.

EAST Coast had a great tune up for the finals, thrashing a disappointing Hobart by 135 points at the TCA. The win was not enough to get the Bombers the double chance as they finished fourth on the ladder by percentage. Hobart finished its first year back in the SFL with four wins.

Huonville 12.14 (86) d Cygnet 7.9 (51)
IN the battle for the wooden spoon, Huonville proved superior on its home ground, kicking away in the second half to record a 35-point win in a great display against a disappointing Cygnet. Huonville celebrated its third win of the season in a promising display, while Cygnet ends the season with only one win.

New Norfolk v Dodges Ferry
THE Eagles are back at home for the final rostered game of the season, taking on third-placed Dodges Ferry in what will be a hard contest the Eagles need to win to finish on top of the ladder and have a bye for the first week of the finals.

New Norfolk was once again dominant last weekend against Sorell, completely thrashing them all over the ground. Key forwards Hall, Thompson, Gardam and Wilson all kicked multiple goals and this style of attack will cause a danger for an under-manned Dodges Ferry defence.

The Sharks were disappointing against Hobart and only a powerful last quarter enabled them to grab the points. Coach Curran will know they will need to play a more defensive style of game against the powerful New Norfolk side.

You would expect the Sharks to play a man behind the ball to try and slow the play while pursuing a possession style of football. They know if the Eagles win the clearances and contested possessions around the ground their forwards are far too powerful to stop in a one-on-one contest.

This could be a good game and will be a great gauge for the Sharks as a loss will almost certainly see them lose the all-important double chance and third spot on the ladder. You would expect them to push the Eagles for most of the game but with the chance of a bye next week the Eagles will be red hot and will want all players in top form and fitness and should record another solid victory.

Lindisfarne v Brighton 

LINDISFARNE is back at home to take on the sixth-placed Brighton. The Two Blues need to win this game if they are to wrest third place back on the ladder as they have a superior percentage to both Dodges Ferry and East Coast Bombers. It should be a close game for much of the day but the Two Blues have too much to play for and with a double chance in the finals at stake you would expect them to be too good towards the end of the game.

Hobart v East Coast
HOBART is back at home for the last game of the season and will be an outside chance to defeat fifth-placed East Coast Bombers after last week’s great performance against Dodges Ferry. In what could be a close game for most of the day the Bombers have too much to play for with finals looming next weekend and you would expect them to record a comfortable victory away from home in a good hard contest that’s probably what coach Coppleman would like this stage in the year.

Claremont v Sorell
SECOND-PLACED Claremont is back at home for the last game of the season when they take on Sorell in what appears to be another one-sided contest. Sorell might stay in the game early but you would expect Claremont to be far too powerful and hungry, recording a big victory on the eve of their finals campaign.

Huonville v Cygnet
IN the game that will decide the wooden spoon, Huonville remains at home to take on its traditional rival Cygnet. With the loser to finish on the bottom of the ladder there will be a lot more in this game than what appears on paper. Perhaps Cygnet with a few senior players returning from injury should really lift to defeat their rivals and take the points in what should be a thrilling contest.

New Norfolk goal-scorers Josh Young and Colin Banks. 

THE New Norfolk Panthers seniors side played Derwent United in some crazy weather at Tynwald Park on Sunday. While the sky was still deciding what it wanted to do, New Norfolk matched the No.2 ranked Derwent for the first 15 minutes before a couple of forced substitutions led to the Panthers losing their momentum.

Derwent capitalised by making the most of the opportunities in front of goal, putting five in the back of the net before half time despite New Norfolk keeper Andy Nicholls making a number of fantastic saves.

The rain started to pelt down during the second half and New Norfolk struggled to get its rhythm back as Derwent slotted in another four - two of them long-distance from outside the box.  The final 20 minutes saw a completely different Panthers outfit as they started nailing their passes, creating some run and playing the football they've shown they can play in the past few weeks. Colin Banks and Josh Young put two goals on the board to make the final score 9-2. This weekend New Norfolk travels to Olinda Grove to take on Uni in what should be a close game.

Junior soccer latest

Under 6 Red played a great game with Holy Rosary, with some great goal scoring and teamwork. Well done Jake, Ruby, Anna and Tyler.

Under 6 Black was able to play only half its game with Brighton White on Friday night due to roster confusion. Hemi, Shaun, Lucas, James and Zack all played well. Their defence work is improving dramatically.

Under 7 Red played a fast-paced game against Brighton on Friday night. The team is working really well. Goal-scorers were Liam, Tenesha and Tristan

Under 7 Black played Brighton Gold. Another fantastic game by all, with a great goal by Lucy Gleeson. Keep up the good work Amber, Mikayla, Oliver, Lucy, Jemma, Rodney and Tristan.

Under 8 Red had a 2-2 draw against Glenorchy Knights at Eady Street. Some excellent play resulted in a goal to J'Khobi in the first half. Great attacking by Nayte, Hamish and Tristan saw some near misses and Jack saved numerous goals as our keeper. The second half saw Nayte and Jack combine for a goal to Nayte with great defence from Jacob W, Jacob P and Declan as our keeper. An all-round great effort and a good game to watch. Well done.

Under 8 Black played a fantastic game against Holy Rosary. There was great goal work from Joshua and Jess and overall great teamwork. A big thanks to Jack for subbing for us once again. It was great to be involved with a fantastic game with Under 8 Red team which played well against Glenorchy Knights. Well done to all involved.

Under 9 played a great game against Dominic which kept New Norfolk scoreless. Well done to Caleb and Caylin in goals with some great saves. Awesome team work from Abby, Luke, Cruez, Ella, Jenny, Oliver and Ella. Well done.

Under 10 played a closed and fast-paced game with Dominic Yellow, resulting in a 2-1 win to New Norfolk. The defence work from both sides was amazing with several potential goals stopped. Well done to Alex Mc and Alex B, our goalies, who were well backed up by Ostyn, Freya and Alex G in defence. Luke and Jacob played a great game through the middle with Maddy kicking a goal in the first half, then Aidan kicked a goal in the second half. There was a great effort up forward by Brock who just missed out on a goal. Well done everyone, it was a great game.

Under 11 defeated Brighton Maroon 8-2 at Tynwald Park. Goals were scored by Jacob 3, Jed 2, Blake 2 and Brayden. Scoring would not have been possible without the exceptional efforts of the whole team. Well done.

Under 14 played a fantastic game against ladder leaders Kingborough Blue, losing by on goal although the official score on the FFT site was 2-0. The ball was pretty much contained in the centre of the ground for most of the game, giving both teams little chance to score. Strong footwork and skill was shown by Jack Rose and Sam Plunkett-Smith, with Sam scoring our goal. Great defence was played in goals and on the backline throughout the game. The team sits in 5th position with 14 points and the ladder leaders have 25 points. A great game.

Under 16 went down 6-3 to FSC after having a long break between games. The first half was tight until FSC got a couple of quick goals. Josh Russell and Jayden were our goal scorers, while Jack was great on the wing.

NEW Norfolk all but sewed up top spot with a big win at home over a disappointing Sorell on Saturday, eventually running out winners by 232 points.

The New Norfolk Eagles refused to let the Sorell Eagles into the game in the first quarter, holding the visiting side scoreless while piling on seven unanswered goals. The game was over at quarter time as the New Norfolk led by 49 points. The second term got even worse for Sorell. While they did manage a goal they allowed New Norfolk to run wild and pile on a further 13 goals to lead by a massive 129 points at half time.

Sorell managed to slow the New Norfolk scoring machine in the third quarter but with their forwards unstoppable and their midfielders delivering the ball with precision New Norfolk slotted a further 11 goals in the last term to blow the opposition away.

New Norfolk had plenty of good players but forward Hall was again outstanding with 13 goals as he moved to nine off the magic hundred. He was well supported by Thompson who kicked six and Gardam who kicked five, whilst Nathan Ross continued his good form along with Horne as dominant players for New Norfolk. Best players for Sorell were Chapman, Lewis and Perry in one of their team's worst performances for the season.

BRIGHTON continued its good recent form when it travelled to Huonville and thrashed a disappointing home side by 93 points. Huonville was in the game early in the first quarter but the Robins were able to kick a couple of late goals to grab a handy 16-point lead at the first change.

CLAREMONT had a battle on its hands all day, eventually edging away from a tenacious and improved East Coast Bombers to take the four points by 17 points in a great game of football at Triabunna.

DODGES Ferry expected to record a big win at home but a tenacious effort from Hobart really took it up to their more fancied rivals and only a last term burst of seven goals allowed Dodges Ferry to break away and eventually win by 26 points in a good game of football.

Lindisfarne 19.17 (131) defeated Cygnet 7.8 (50) 
LINDISFARNE travelled down to Cygnet looking for a big percentage-boosting win as it tried to jump back into third spot on the ladder. The Two Blues were made to work hard before running away to win by 81 points.

New supermarket making good progress

Rapid progress appears to be being made on the construction of the new
Woolworths Supermarket in George St, New Norfolk.

The new supermarket is being built using pre-cast concrete panels and
the first two walls went up last week.

The rear view of the building, which is going up across the street from the
existing Woolworths Supermarket on the opposite corner of George and
Charles Streets in New Norfolk.

Macquarie Builders are carrying out the work for Fabcot Pty Ltd, the
development arm of Woolworths Supermarkets.

Free horticulture course at New Norfolk

THE Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and the training organisation GlobalNet Academy are offering a free horticulture courses to students in the Derwent Valley from August 21 to December 8, 2014.

The Building Horticulture Skills course is based on a nationally recognised program and is described as an excellent introductory program for students wanting to develop a career in horticulture that provides a pathway for participants into further Certificate 2 training.

Set a moderate pace, the course work is designed to be enjoyable and practical. The aim of the course is to provide an ideal starting point for students of any age who are interested in exploring the world of horticulture but may have little experience of either the industry or of formal study.

Students will learn a variety of work-relevant skills from the planting of trees, shrubs and vegetables, to ground and planting preparation, organic production practices, plant propagation and more.

Normally run as a full fee-paying program, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and registered training organisation GlobalNet Academy have obtained funding from Skills Tasmania to allow a fully subsidised courses at Smithton in the north-west and in the Derwent Valley in the south. This means students from those areas will be able to undertake the course free of charge.

Entry to the course is restricted to members of the community who would otherwise have difficulties accessing this type of training. These members of the community could include people with a disability, early school leavers, jobless families, single parents, women returning to the workforce and others.

River's up again today

RIVER rises in the Lower Derwent catchment are expected to peak early this afternoon while staying below "minor flood" level. The Bureau of Meteorology says high tidal variations are expected again today, with localised flooding in adjacent creeks and surrounding low lying areas along the lower River Derwent still possible this evening.

Rainfall levels up to 23mm were recorded in the 24 hours to 9am today in the upper reaches of the Lower Derwent river catchments. Additional falls up to 15mm are possible during Sunday, falling as snow above 300 metres.

Catchments are saturated and snow melting is expected to maintain high river levels over the next few days.

New Norfolk v Sorell
TOP-of the table New Norfolk is at home for the second week in a row and will be far too experienced and classy when taking on Sorell. Sorell has really improved in recent weeks and its defensive style of football has really frustrated its opponents.

With only two games left to play, New Norfolk is expected to record another big victory at home to ensure top spot on the ladder. It will be interesting to see if the improving Sorell side, which is well coached by David Lewis, can restrict their scoring ability.

Huonville v Brighton 
HUONVILLE takes on the in-form Brighton which will be looking to get off to a good start and really assert its authority early in the game. The Lions should be competitive for most of the game but may face a long day if they allow Brighton to get off to a good start. Brighton should record a comfortable victory and the Lions may have to wait for the last week of the season to grab their third victory against cellar-dweller Cygnet.

East Coast v Claremont
IN the game of the round third-placed East Coast is at home and taking on second-placed Claremont. In what could be a great test for the Bombers, the in-form Claremont Magpies should be far too strong, with too many scoring opportunities.

Dodges Ferry v Hobart
DODGES Ferry takes on Hobart at Shark Park where a win should see them take third place on the ladder and a chance for the all important double chance in the finals. You would expect Hobart to put up a fight early in the game but Dodges Ferry is playing its best football when it counts and should run away with a comfortable victory and be firmly entrenched in third position on the ladder by 4.30 on Saturday afternoon.

Cygnet v Lindisfarne
CYGNET is back at home and looking to record its second win of the season while celebrating its 2004 premiership reunion. The Port players may be spurred-on by the presence of their past and present great footballers but the Two Blues have too much at stake to drop this game and should record a solid victory.

Charges laid over hotel thefts

POLICE have charged a Rokeby man with a list of alleged offences including two burglaries at New Norfolk's Star and Garter Hotel. Detective Sergeant David Gill said Glenorchy and Bellerive CIB officers had charged the 28-year-old man over a series of business burglaries across southern Tasmania in recent months.

"It’s alleged the man stole bags of coins from the Star and Garter Hotel on two occasions in June 2014. The man was arrested north of Bagdad on the Midland Hwy yesterday afternoon," Det-Sgt Gill said earlier today. The charge sheet includes:

• 11 counts of burglary
• 11 counts of stealing
• Two counts of aggravated burglary
• Two counts of attempted aggravated burglary
• Three counts of motor vehicle stealing
• One count of attempting to unlawfully set fire to property
• One count of evading police.

NEW Norfolk was back at home on Saturday and was never going to let Hobart into the game at all. The Eagles were far too strong all day, eventually running out winners by 241 points. The game was over at quarter time as the Eagles kicked 10 goals to one in the first term they raced away to a 57 point lead while Hobart was having trouble getting the ball over the centre and could not stop the dominating Eagle forwards.

The second term saw the young Tigers slow down the scoring as they played a more accountable game of football and kicked the ball wide to frustrate the Eagles who were only able to kick six goals. Hobart’s tactics did not allow them to get many scoring opportunities and slowed their own scoring as a result, trailing by 87 points at the main change.

The second half was all one way traffic for the Eagles who really put their foot down and the Tigers allowed New Norfolk too many easy goals as they finished with 13 in the last term to record another percentage-boosting victory which should assure them of a top spot in that all important home final.

Best players for New Norfolk were mainly their forwards with Hall continuing his great season with 11 goals and he was well supported by Michael Thompson with eight along with Booth kicking five and Ross continuing his good form with four goals in a lively display. Other good players for the Eagles were Wilkins, Tonks and Clifford. Best players for the Tigers were Young who has had a very consistent season and he was supported by Henderson and Claridge as they really struggled to the end of their first season in the SFL.

BRIGHTON continued its recent good form to thrash a disappointing Cygnet on their home turf with a blistering first half and eventually running out winners by 107 points. Brighton came out of the sheds and really took it up to their rivals and never allowed the Cygnet players to get their hands on the ball as they slammed on 11 unanswered goals and raced to a match winning lead of 69 points at quarter time against a shell shocked Cygnet.

The second term again saw the Robins dominate the game but Cygnet started to work itself into the game and was able to kick three goals but the game was well and truly over at half time with a dominant 84 point lead to the home side. The second half saw the game slow down as Cygnet played a more defensive brand of football and the home side appeared to take the foot off the accelerator. Brighton nevertheless recorded a great win at home to clearly show they are the best team outside the top five.

Claremont 43.18 (276) d Huonville 2.1 (13)
THE in-form Claremont was back at home and refused to let the struggling Huonville into the game. After piling on 11 unanswered goals in the first quarter the game was over at quarter time as the Lions failed to score and trailed by a mammoth 73 points at the first change. The second term was the same as the first with a further 11 goals as Claremont players were unaccountable and Huonville was well out of its depth and did not look interested. The second half saw Claremont rake up the biggest winning margin of the season so far. The 263-point win was  a percentage-boosting victory but it does not appear to be enough to catch New Norfolk who aren't likely to drop a game for the rest of the season.  


Dodges Ferry 15.15 (105) d Lindisfarne 6.13 (49)
IN the game of the round with third-place up for grabs, Dodges Ferry had the home ground advantage and dominated an extremely disappointing Lindisfarne for most of the day, eventually running out winners by 56 points.

East Coast 9.18 (72) d Sorell 5.11 (41)
THE East Coast Bombers travelled to Sorell for what was a real danger game but they held the upper hand all day and in a low scoring slugging affair eventually ran out winners by 31 points.

For damaging north-west to westerly winds southeast of a line from Eddystone Point to Strathgordon for Wednesday.

Weather Situation
A cold front will approach the state from the south-west during Wednesday and cross the state Wednesday evening.

Damaging north-west to westerly winds to 55km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for the South East, Upper Derwent Valley, Midlands and East Coast forecast districts, southern parts of the Western and Central Plateau forecast districts, and eastern parts of the North East forecast district from late Wednesday morning. Gusts may reach 110km/h about southern Tasmania during Wednesday afternoon. Damaging winds are expected to ease during Wednesday evening. Wet ground due to recent heavy rain may make trees fall more easily in windy conditions.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

• Supervise children closely
• Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment
• Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
• Manage pets and livestock
• Be prepared in case of power outages
• Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
• Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice

Volunteers to the rescue at Mt Field

VOLUNTEERS came to the rescue of a French tourist in the snow at Mt Field National Park yesterday. Mt Mawson Ski Patrol, Oldina Ski Club members and the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association co-ordinated the rescue and provided support to a 20-year-old French man who had collapsed in the snow while walking from Lake Dobson to the Lake Seal lookout.

They made contact with Tasmania Police Search and Rescue and Ambulance Tasmania at about 3pm and the monitored the patient while waiting for the rescue helicopter to arrive. A team of volunteers later used a rescue sled to transport the man up to landing site on the ski fields from where he was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition.
