Community celebrates Christmas

The Derwent Scottish Pipe Band.
THE sun shone brightly on the New Norfolk Christmas Parade earlier today. There were about 20 official entries but as usual the actual number of vehicles and walkers was much higher.

Organised for the second time by the Lions Club of New Norfolk and the Derwent Valley Rotary Club for the New Norfolk Business Alliance, this year's event included some variations on the usual format. Chief among these was a decision to have each participating band stop opposite the Post Office for a stationery performance until the next band arrived to take its place.

For the first time in several years, the vehicle carrying Santa Claus also stopped outside the Post Office to allow children a brief opportunity to meet the guest of honour.

Prizes were awarded for the best floats but the results have not yet been received. Some 34 businesses entered the associated shop window competition and first prize went to Big Red Box. Ooh Lah Lay was awarded second prize while Pennyworth, Flywheel and the New Norfolk Hotel were equal third. The Salvation Army Thrift Shop received a commendation.

Photo gallery tomorrow.

Cubs and Scouts were there in numbers.
