"At approximately 2.50am this morning a white ute was reversed through the front door of Woolworths Store, New Norfolk," Detective Senior Sergeant Philippa Burk said. "Three offenders left the vehicle and attempted to steal cigarettes. The doorway to the store was significantly damaged during the raid."
The main entrance doors to the supermarket were destroyed and considerable damage was done to the customer service counter just inside. The supermarket opened as usual this morning but the damaged entrance was roped-off by police tape and has since been boxed in. Customers can access the supermarket via the secondary doors closer to Charles St.
At about 3.20am police received another report of a ram raid, this time at the Granada Hotel Bottleshop at Berriedale where a white ute had been reversed through the front of the premises causing a substantial amount of damage. Cigarettes and alcohol were stolen.
"It is believed that the two vehicles involved in these incidents were both stolen and both were located burnt out earlier this morning," Det Sen-Sgt Burk said. "CCTV footage has been reviewed and a description of the offenders obtained."
